APC Covers Revolutionary Anthems

On its forthcoming album "eMOTIVe," A Perfect Circle offers a pack of 10 covers and two new songs. Bandleader Maynard James Keenan's description of the set as "a collection of songs about war, peace, love and greed" couldn't be more accurate, as the band has reinterpreted songs of revolution by singer/songwriters and punks and from the worlds of blues, soul and new wave.

As previously reported, the album is due on the U.S. Election Day (Nov. 2) and is preceded by the single "Counting Bodies Like Sheep to the Rhythm of the War Drums." An anti-war/George Bush animated video is posted on the band's Web site along with a pro-voting message from Keenan.

In addition to previously announced versions of John Lennon's "Imagine," Marvin Gaye's "What's Goin On" and Fear's "Let's Have a War," Billboard.com can exclusively reveal that "eMOTIVe" includes renditions of songs by Joni Mitchell, Devo, Depeche Mode and Black Flag, as well as the original song "Passive."

The set opens with APC's take on "Annihilation" by short-lived, politically charged San Francisco punk act Crucifix and also features a take of Black Flag's snarling "Gimme Gimme Gimme."

Keenan and his bandmates also reinterpret Mitchell's "Fiddle and the Drum," an intimate, war-questioning cut from her 1969 masterpiece "Clouds"; the Nick Lowe-written, Elvis Costello-popularized "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace Love and Understanding"; and the Memphis Minnie blues classic "When the Levee Breaks," most famously covered by Led Zeppelin.

Delving into new wave, APC takes on the title track of Devo's 1980 hit album "Freedom of Choice" and Depeche Mode's breakthrough single about compassion, "People Are People."

Just two weeks after the release of the covers album, A Perfect Circle will release "aMOTION," a remix CD and DVD package with live clips.

Here is the "eMOTIVe" track list:

"Annihilation"
"Imagine"
"(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace Love and Understanding"
"Counting Bodies Like Sheep to the Rhythm of the War Drums"
"What's Going On"
"When the Levee Breaks"
"Freedom of Choice"
"People Are People"
"Passive"
"Gimmie Gimmie Gimmie"
"Let's Have a War"
"Fiddle and the Drum"

That's a pretty eclectic song listing...I must admit, I'm no APC fan but I'm very impressed by it and will check it out to see what kind of job (or what kind of damage) they do on/to these songs.

I can understand, but Maynard has always been about making up your own beliefs/thoughts, I think that they aren't trying to presude people to vote for Kerry, but rather get people involved in this election and into politics and decide from there which candidate you like.

I can't wait for this, anyone who knows me knows how much of a fan of MJK(especially TOOL) I am and I'll be getting this one right away, can't wait for the DVD to come out as well.

I agree about there motive maybe they want to make a extra statement by it being on election day. I am hopeing Tupac's New CD comes out on Election day he spoke of wanting to do that in the past.

And His mother get's the money and is doing great comunity service things with it such as building TASCA(Tupac Amaru Shakur Center of Arts) a School for underprivliged childer. I hope to one day work there or at least volunter my time.

Maynard is one of the best few singers who can actually do a good job in mixing these messages in their music. Im looking forward to it. And Nick C. I heard there must be at least garageful of tupac songs still left unreleased. The guy must have lived music and i respect that.

There's prolific and then there's prolific.....he's been gone now for how long?

I have a very hard time believing he was that prolific.....if he was , then he has to have been the most prolific artist in the history of recorded music....no way anyone with that short a span on the scene had that much material in the can at the time of his passing...no way.

The guy is closing in on Hendrix on the most Posthumous songs fast and 2pac already has a load of posthumous releases.

I heard Prince also has a **** load too.

Hes covering Marvin Gaye........... Im extremely surprised and anxious about this cover. I have a lot of cover songs of Gaye and so far its been pretty terrible. Lets just hope this one is not. Right now trying to imagine Maynards voice replacing Marvin Gaye's.....It doesnt sound right.

The thing with Hendrix is that a lot of those posthumous releases were suspect...mainly due to having an old demo fleshed out with studio musicians years after the fact (you can thank Alan Douglas for this travesty)....I don't really consider them as part of the catalog for this reason....I only count what's issued by the family and live shows.

Could a lot of this 2pac unreleased stuff be in the same general vein or maybe remixes?

word is that after this Release(Said to be Pre Deathrow Material) there is at least 100 more songs. it's amazing he only made music from 1989-1996 and has put out 10 CD's(13 Disc's) along with many guest apperances. In my oppinon most the songs are Amazing only a handfull that I dont think should have been released.

There's prolific and then there's prolific.....he's been gone now for how long?

Tupac fan's have tryed to find out how many if any Artists have more Songs then Tupac, Mozart has made 600 compositions that is the only one we know for sure even Rivels him. it is also hard to know how to count how many songs Tupac has done since he did Multipul Takes of the same song wich changed lyrics sometimes years apart, and also changed the lyrics on the Clean versions enought to almost make them new songs.

The guy is closing in on Hendrix on the most Posthumous songs fast and 2pac already has a load of posthumous releases.

I heard Prince also has a **** load too.
When Prince Dies if anyone want's to put out all his music he will surpass Tupac Prince says he has around 2,000 unreleleased songs. Says when he wants to hear new music he makes it! I am also a huge Prince Fan but upset he does not allow Rappers to sample his beats verry often :(

Tupac fan's are in constant search of the "OG's" of his songs due to lackluster remixing of his songs. Tupac would often recored a song useing a primative beat, intending to have producers mix it down after the fact. Unfortuantly untill recently his mother had poor producers working on his material, but now she has inlisted top producers Eminem(does it for free),and Kanye West are both said to have produced songs for the new CD.

Hogan have you ever heard Makaveli The Don Killuminati:"The 7 Day Theroy"?
That is considerd his Masterpiece if you like rap at all you may enjoy it, even if not you would aprichate the music I belive.

THAT I can respect...but not like.

but most rap, where they just get a beat and sample from other peoples work...no, no respect for that.

Sampling........you think guitarists all make up their own riffs and strums??? No. And plus there's not as much sampling as you think there is. Sampling is a very expensive process. The sampling was common back in the late 80's, but not anymore. And if you're still not satisfied with my answer think of it as mosiac where you take bits of others work and create your own. Mosiac is considered art you know?

glad I have that bozo on Ignore!

I myself hate the Puff Daddy type of Sampling where he just takes a instrumental and has people rap over it, there are plenty of people that are just as creative with samples as you would be with a live instrument.

BTW Peep this article it is going to impact Hip Hop alot.

Never assume cause what you have said about me is totally wrong. I listen to everything including the 70's music. Unlike you I have an open mind about music as it is a freedom of expression no matter how it was made. To you today's music might sound like crap generally and it does to me too but in a less severe extent. And if you wanna talk about musicianship you should get into classical music. Now thats musicianship.

And if you still dont believe on what I listen to I would glady talk about music with you since music is my passion.

This is exactly what Tupac wanted. He knew his mouth had already written his toe tag, and so recorded like a mother to get as much material laid down as possible that could be released once he was dead...

It's kind of spooky really...

I have just saw the music video "Counting Bodies Like Sheep to the Rhythm of the War Drums." I dont know how to react to it. It just doesnt feel like a great song as it singles out a person instead of being more subtle. Its a pretty good music video and song i guess, but I am somewhat disappointed.
