Powell accuses Sudan of genocide
By Barbara Slavin, USA TODAY
WASHINGTON — The Bush administration on Thursday accused the government of Sudan of committing genocide in its western region of Darfur through "a consistent and widespread pattern of atrocities" that have displaced nearly 1.5 million people and killed at least 30,000.

Secretary of State Colin Powell testifies before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
By Stephen Jaffe, AFP

Secretary of State Colin Powell conceded that the State Department designation, determined after interviews with more than 1,000 refugees in Sudan's neighbor, Chad, does not mean new penalties. But he said he hoped it would pressure Sudan to stop its forces and Arab militiamen it has armed from destroying more black African villages and killing and raping inhabitants. He also said it could help persuade Sudan to allow a large non-Sudanese African force to provide security for Darfur victims in more than 140 camps.

"Call it a civil war. Call it ethnic cleansing. Call it genocide. Call it 'none of the above.' " Powell told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. "The reality is the same: There are people in Darfur who desperately need the help of the international community."(Related item:U.S. State Dept. report on Darfur)

Powell's comments were his strongest since the crisis erupted this year. The Bush administration has wrestled over whether to use the word "genocide," fearing that the Sudanese regime might raise new barriers to aid for refugees.

Bush, like Powell, labeled Sudan's actions genocide and called for international action to stop it. "The world cannot ignore the suffering of more than one million people."

On Wednesday, the administration unveiled a draft United Nations Security Council resolution that raises the possibility of an embargo on Sudan's oil, the source of most of its revenue. The United States already has economic sanctions against Sudan because of its past support for terrorist groups.

Powell conceded that a U.N. oil embargo is unlikely. He also acknowledged that even though thousands more Darfur refugees might die, "nobody is prepared to send troops from the United States or European Union."

A State Department report Thursday accused Sudan of causing "the worst humanitarian and human rights crisis in the world today." It said 61% of refugees interviewed said they had seen the killing of a family member; 16% said they had been raped or heard about a rape from a victim.

Human rights organizations were pleased by the administration's use of the word "genocide" but said it was not enough. "It highlights the enormous gap between the administration's rhetoric and the actions it is willing to take," said John Prendergast, an expert on the Sudan at the International Crisis Group, an organization that tries to prevent and stop armed conflicts.

Sudanese officials shrugged off the genocide designation.

I hope you realize your intolerence only spreads hate, and your crusader talk would only help in recruiting more terrorists to attack us. Religion should be stamped out in all forms, focusing on Islamists that blow up kids and cut off heads leaves out the radical fundamentalist christians that poison the minds of kids that Noah's ark is real, and evolution is just a theory.

The first four months of 1972 are at the beginning of a controversial period in Bush's Guard service. After taking his last flight in April 1972, Bush went for six months without reporting for any training drills.

In September 1972 he received permission to transfer to an Alabama Guard unit so he could work on a political campaign there.

That May, Bush also skipped a required yearly medical examination. In response, his commanders grounded Bush on August 1, 1972.

Intolerance? WTF are you talking about? ISLAM is the embodiment of intolerance. They kill children, they commit suicide, they do every thing to embody intolerance.

and your crusader talk would only help in recruiting more terrorists to attack us.

You Dimwit. Noone in the West is calling for Jihad. Do you know what Jihad is?

Religion should be stamped out in all forms,

I am not even going to comment.

That is a rant. We are not focusing on Islamists, they are attacking us. Cutting off head is their forte. Teaching how Noah brought in all Gods Creatures, myth or not, isn't exactly hatefull.

No, I agree it is. So is christianity.

As far as cutting off heads, do you remember the spanish inquisition.

As Americans we need to keep liberty and freedom as the goal of our country, as you Bush "supporters" should know we are now trying to "liberate" IRAQ, not stamp out Islam. You sound like the KKK and Nazis with this crap.

Knock it off and act like an American.

You have to realize that the kids being taught to blow themselves up to kill Americans with suicide bombs are just as innocent as our kids. They grow up and do it as adults, just like our ignorance has kids and later, adults, believing in Noah's Ark. Killing them all does nothing to stop it, exterminating the enemy is so unbelievably unethical and sickening you should be ashamed of yourselves.

You sound like Usama talking about "killing the infidels".

Hold yourself to a higher standard, do not lower yourself to his dispicable and ignorant level.

We are Americans, act like it, talk like it, and on here, write like it.

All religion is wrong, not just Islam. Maybe they are the most wrong, but you don't just stop religion by blowing up the Mosque they pray in.

Thank you for comparing me to a suicide bomber. By the way, I wasn't a Christian until much later in my life. I never went to church, and didn't really have any strong religious influences around me. At the age of 24 I gave my life to Christ and have tried to live the Christian life ever since.

I know that it may surprise you, but becoming a Christian meant questioning others and reading as much as I could from different viewpoints. I won't ever say that I don't have any questions about some things, but I have found answers to a lot of them through study.

I know that you might like to think that Christianity is just for ignorant people, but you should really think about how ignorant that statement is. I would be happy to introduce you to many individuals who are simply brilliant in my opinion. I don't exactly consider myself a genius by any means, but I would be willing to surmise that my educational and intellectual level is at least on par with yours. So please think about what you are saying before you go around calling Christianity, and people associated with it ignorant.

I am now getting off of my soapbox and slowly backing away.
