I found this interesting site that put's alot in perspective
Even Though I consider myself "Poor" compaired to people outside America and other industrial nations I do fairly well.
If this does not make you question the current state of the world and the downfalls of Capitalisim you better be giving alot back!

You are in the top 12.83% richest people in the world.
There are 5,230,168,175 people poorer than you.
How do you feel about that? A bit richer we hope. Please consider donating just a small amount to help some of the poorest people in the world. Many of their lives could be improved dramatically or even saved if you donate just one hour's salary (approx $8.33)

No i'm not:) I'm a libertarian.. I've just lived in the south to long and dealt with to many social issues to vote for anyone who ties themselves strongly to religion. I'd rather pay a bit more in taxes and be able to buy beer on Sundays then the alternative.

Don't forget to account for your tax burden when you enter your income, it can make a significant difference.
BTW, speaking of taxes, did you know that if you are a breadwinner for a US family of four, you can have an income in the top 10.73% in the world (with 5,355,653,298 people poorer than you), and still get away with paying NO federal income tax without taking ANY special deductions or credits (e.g. charitable giving, home mortgage, medical expenses, EIT, etc.)?
The poor in the US are rich by world standards. It's time to allow the poor in the US to earn back their self respect by paying their fair share of the tax burden. :P

It's d@mn funny. But don't get moody :moody: , you have to tolerate other opinions and lifestyle choices. To shoot someone because of their lifestyle choice or beliefs would be a hate crime and many know very well what happened to Cartman when he committed a hate crime. You don't want to be smuggling cigarettes into prison using your anus as a storage facility do you? No, of course you don't. So put down the gun and pick up your bongos...it's time for kum-bai-ya. my theory on that Sas is: occupations dealing with taking care of people are historically and globally lower than occupations dealing with the creation of WEALTH like engineering, software, finance and so on.
Why? It's cause people can't own people. (at least on the balance sheet, according to generally acccepted accounting principles.)

You could live, but you wouldn't have a house or a car. Your kids would get jobs at age 6, rather than ever go to school. You'd live with your entire family in a one room mud hut with a thatched roof. Your life expectancy would be 30 or 40 years shorter and half your family would have aids.
There isn't a day that goes by that I'm not incredibly thankful for what we have. I really think Americans have no perspective on what poor REALLY is. I've been fortunate enough to have travelled a bit and SEEN how a lot of truly poor people live. It sucks.. I don't feel guilty for being rich (relatively), but I have no delusions that my wealth is in stark contrast to about 85% of the people on this planet. Saying 'they're ok, the cost of living is lower' just isn't true.. while you can take American wealth into those countries and literally live like a king, the fact is that those people are incredibly poor. In a hopeless, mired way that we can barely imagine.
I'm not saying we should feel guilty about our wealth, but we have a responsibility to be sympathetic to those who aren't so fortunate to have been born in the west (And that's what it is, we're simply lucky).

I'd check again. Tenure is one of the biggest reasons people go into teaching. Kind of gives them the leeway to deal with their classroom as they see fit. At any rate, they all still get the 3 months + Holidays off. Let's put them on an hourly rate, at say, $18/hr. Decent enough, hell we'll make it $22/hr. setting 8 hr. max. work days. See how they do then.

Are teachers (or daycare workers) so stupid that they don't realize they are entering a job that doesn't pay top dollar? I don't buy it.
They aren't being exploited. The reason pay is low for teachers is because the requirements are low, the schedule is very compatible with raising a family, and a lot of people want to do it.
Let them quit, there will be a huge line of people waiting to take their jobs. It's supply and demand. But then, they probably didn't teach things like that at Karl Marx University.

Clinton Portis is a girlyman, momma's boy. At least he was until he got traded to the Redskins. :)
Seriously, your paycheck is not a measure of your value as a human being. It is a reflection of market forces in our capitalistic society. Clinton Portis has rare skills that can be marketed to the public to create huge amounts of revenue. It's only fair that he share in that revenue stream. Teachers have common skills that don't generate much revenue. It's really pretty simple.

not sure what "Portis is a girlyman, momma's boy" has to do with anything.
what my point is that if you value Enertainment 100 times more then Education it is no wonder the population is so ignorant. people need to get away from the distractions Entertainment and news have become. or you can just follow the leader to do the bidding of multi-national corporations.

I wasnt going to take part in this , as some of you here know I own rental Property 14 units ( sold the one in Greeley Colo) You are in the top 0.827% richest people in the world. There are 5,950,350,435 people poorer than you.
How do you feel about that? A bit richer we hope. Please consider donating just a small amount to help some of the poorest people in the world. Many of their lives could be improved dramatically or even saved if you donate just one hour's salary (approx $43.05)
Oh, and in case you’re interested you are the 49,649,565 richest person in the world.

I agree with you "You are not you're Bank Account" but at the same time I think most people are not able to provide doing what they "Want" to do, many people get traped in the system I myself was at risk untill I wised up. after seeing many friends spend 4-5 years at CU only to get laid off from job to job in industrys they have no interest in other then the pay check.

I am thankfull for this exchange has opend me up to understanding the general public more.
I think if I saw more "safty net's" for americans I would have less to gripe about yet still am humankind minded.
And about everyone being exploited one time or another I agree it bothers me cause I am one to stand up for myself and prevent that from happening(I have been out of work a few weeks for refuseing to be exploited) and it just hurts knowing if we all stood up it could change but most don't have the streangth or knowledge to do so. in turn I have to suffer more becuse there is alwasy someone waiting to be exploited. I am takeing steps to prevent it in the future and hopefully along the way help others.
Thanks again

Are teachers (or daycare workers) so stupid that they don't realize they are entering a job that doesn't pay top dollar? I don't buy it.
They aren't being exploited. The reason pay is low for teachers is because the requirements are low, the schedule is very compatible with raising a family, and a lot of people want to do it.
Let them quit, there will be a huge line of people waiting to take their jobs. It's supply and demand. But then, they probably didn't teach things like that at Karl Marx University.
Stupid...gee thanks. YES< I Do realize that I wasn't going to be paid great..but the thing is, unless you check it out and check it out well, you just don't reallize how low. Do you realize children spend on the average 50 weeks in childcare if they are enrolled full-time...and that's probably on the low side especially in cities with longer commute times....Nannies make more and have less children. I am talking about TEACHERs...and yes, we are teachers that have four year degrees in Early Childhood and/or Child Development. Most childcare teachers are required to have a four year degree. With my degree, I also had 12 credit hours of student teaching. Teaching children above 5 make more than we do. Childcare TEACHERS are actually more important, in my opinion, working with 6 weeks - age 5 than elementary and high school teachers...Children grow rapidly and learn more in their first five years than any time in life and yet their teachers get paid between 6-8 bucks an hour. It is RIDICULOUS. Most positions don't even pay any benefits or only pay partial benefits...and usually only get minimal cost of living increases each year. I could make more working at Starbucks! (Not to mention have a lot less stress.)
We have had quite a few parents complain about the cost of childcare (If you have kids, you know what I"m talking about, only to find out later what their child's teachers' make and they are appalled. Our center was recently closed because of budget cuts....parents need to work and they need to have quality care for their children. If childcare teachers can't afford to live on their salaries...I'm talking basic living expenses...who will be around later to care for society's most precious commodity...
I love kids and that's why I do what I do but somehow, someway, the bills still need to be paid. Trust me...there won't be a huge line of people waiting for my job...my job is already gone and if they want to go into childcare, they'd better have a rich husband or a winning lottery ticket.

Everyone can only take so much. I don't disagree with you. I think that the formative years of a child's life are usually their youngest. If a child gets a lot of interaction at young ages I think they do much better.
Unfortunately, what people want is a warehouse for their kids at the cheapest price. You're right, parents complain about childcare costs, but ultimately it will come to them to make a deciscion about where their kids go.
It would seem that unionizing and striking is a moot point then, as there is no job to be had. It is to the detriment of our society then that such is taking place. There will be some positions of course, for rich parents, where the teachers make a fair wage. Sometimes though, I suppose you have to bite the bullet and get a different, higher paying job. I think(or at least hope) that eventually things will change and a proper emphasis will be placed on your line of work.

Oh goodness gracious, please don't tell me you interpreted my post as accusing teachers of being stupid. And if you did interpret it that way, please don't tell me you are a teacher (with comprehension skills like that).
YES< I Do realize that I wasn't going to be paid great...
OK, I see that you are a teacher so I hope you were just joking with your first comment. In any event, this supports exactly the point I was making which was that teachers understand they aren't going to make top dollar.
..but the thing is, unless you check it out and check it out well, you just don't reallize how low.
I went to school for a degree in a field that I eventually realized wasn't for me. It was an expensive lesson, but I wouldn't expect society to compensate me for my mistake. For the same reason, I wouldn't support artificially increasing teacher pay just because some teachers don't realize just how low teaching salaries are before they get into it. Teachers get paid what the market will bear.
Furthermore, once you get into it, you do understand the pay scale and are free to change jobs. For that reason, it's an extreme stretch for anyone to imply that this is exploitation (as I believe Nick C. did).
Do you realize children spend on the average 50 weeks in childcare if they are enrolled full-time...and that's probably on the low side especially in cities with longer commute times....Nannies make more and have less children. I'm very happy that there are people like you who love doing important jobs like teaching and nursing enough to put up with the low relative pay and the negatives of the jobs (e.g. nurses who spend a substantial amount of their time cleaning up the various bodily fluids of their patients, *yuck*). I have a lot of respect for caregivers (my wife is a nurse). But it's time for you to grow up and realize that you have to choose between a high paying job with benefits and the kind of low-paying job you just lost (sorry to hear about that BTW). If nanny's make more, then become a nanny. Find some rich family that's willing to pay top dollar to have their kids cared for in the best possible way and then prove to them that you are the one to provide that care. That way you can continue to work with the kids you love. If that's not right for you and you need the money then go to work at Starbucks or go back to school to train for a different job. We all have to make choices. If it were up to me, I'd be a professional football watcher (well in a way I guess I already am, but I mean a guy who watches football for a living) or a professional music listener or a professional forum poster, but unfortunately I can't find anyone to pay me a decent wage for doing those things. So I had to choose a more practical route.
Good luck with whatever you end up doing.

mmmmm.......not quite sure how to take that...and you're wrong, I do mind...I'm doing it for the kids...
Sounds like a backhanded compliment of some sort. ::)
You are misinterpreting Nick C. now. This is his way of saying he appreciates you for all you do and that he empathizes with you because, in his view, you are being exploited. It's a load of crap, but it is a straight up compliment, not a backhanded one.

You're not getting it...it doesn't have anything to do with me in general...and I don't think you're realizing how degrading some of your post is sounding...

You are right. I should have left the "for you to grow up" part out. I should have just said, "you need to realize..." instead. My apologies.
Otherwise, I think I get it just fine, but feel free to set me straight.

I'm not asking for a dramatic pay increase to do a job I enjoy...just to make enough to pay the bills...and have you ever tried to contact politicians and get other people to contact politicians for a cause that you believed in? Just curious.
Grow up? Gee thanks. I've been working since I was a sophomore in high school and also had babysitting jobs since I was eleven. Just for your INFO...the "low paying" job I lost was NOT the average lowpaying childcare Teacher Position...and I had good benefits including a retirement plan and 5 weeks paid vacation/paid holidays and dental/health.

Been there. Done that. But like you said. I have to "grow-up" sometime.

Do you realize how much it costs to go back to school and the time involved. I'm a little to old to be doing that now. It wouldn't be worth the time to pay bills and they would also want to hire someone younger that would stick around for awhile.

You may have missed my apology for the "grow up" comment, so just in case, let me repeat that I think that was uncalled for.
Perhaps it was the "I could make more working at Starbucks! (Not to mention have a lot less stress.)" comment that led me to believe that you, personally, had lost a low paying teaching job.
I can't remember a specific issue that has ever moved me to lobby a politician, but I don't have a problem with special interest groups (even if they are a single person) trying to influence our political process. That's the way it works. On this issue though, to the extent that I do participate in the political process (e.g. by voting or supporting specific candidates), I would be working against any government wage supports for day care workers if that's what you are talking about. I'm too libertarian for that kind of thing.

As a matter of fact I do. I've been there and done that. In fact, it was my second degree (that I decided to pursue after 5 years in my first career), that turned out to be the one that was an expensive mistake. You are right, it takes a lot of time and is costly. We all have to either live with the choices we've made for ourselves or make new choices now to change our circumstances. I've made my share of bad choices. IMO, government should have a very limited role in making up for poor personal choices. I know others disagree with this and that's why we argue about politics around here.
Anyway, good luck to you and I'm sorry if I offended you.

Actually, I made that comment in regard to the jobs that I've seen posted in the classifieds and online in the past 7 months.

frankly, i believe another component for why teachers, nurses, secretaries and so on are paid low wages is pure misogyny.

Nowhere near as rich as that pig Michael Moore.
Pity that lying fraud fatass doesn't live up to his principles and donate every single penny of his wealth to the families of the military guys stationed in Iraq. I wouldn't be surprised if he spends more in a single sitting (at the kind of fancy restaurants the superrich like him can afford, feeding his lardass) than the family of a Pfc serving in Iraq spends in a whole month on food.
I see Michael Moore, and I think Mr. Creosote. 'Tis a shame it's unlikely he'll explode of his own engorgement and leave this earth, to the rest of us honest, reasonable, decent folks.
Michael Moore epitomizes all that is wrong with the Left in this nation.

I had a post for Sassy but I pulled it. I have been pushed so far into a corner on so many things, some things I don't care to battle out other than it's fun.
1. Teachers should be paid on achievment. That doesn't mean a kid in South Oakland or whatever should be expected to place as well as someone in Iowa. It should be on a curve if there ever was a reason for a curve. Improvement IS IMPROVEMENT.
I think that child care is very important. Look, here is my opinion and it sounds stupid, but sometimes you get what you want, and it ain't so good.
Now, mom heads to the job, drops off the kids at child care, blah blah blah. Works all day, picks up whiney kids, hubby comes home.
There is the freedom you wanted baybee.
If I was a female, I would of rather been Kitty from that 70's show. Ha ha ha...I'm smoking a cigarette and drinking a glass of wine....it's amused me for 25 years.
Given their liberation, women are bitchier and more unhappy than ever. Let me tell you something else!
When they talk about the womens workforce, it wasn't even COUNTED till they started working. Having your wife was considered weak and frowned on.
Now when she comes home tired, he comes home tired, the kids have been pulling each others hair out in some oddball day care?
It makes Leave it to Beaver look pretty damn good doesn't it.
Hello Beaver, how was school today?
Beaver: You bitch, the damn key under the mat was gone again, and you expect me to buy some crap from McDonalds again?
I remember when our meals cost 40 cents, and we actually got 2 meals. We got some oatmeal and OJ and some eggs. You know, I am continually amazed how good I had it, but for some reason, the idea was that there had to be some sort of transormation of society.
One of my favorite writers, TMQ, Gregg Westerbook wrote a very good book on the subject. He's a Rhodes Scholar and almost mirrors my opinions. He also writes for NFL.com
His new book is called "The Progress Paradox"
