As fishing season winds down (or atleast in this region) just curious as to who did some fishing this year? Where did you go? What did you catch?
I hit the Grand Canyon early in the year. Lee's Ferry more specific. Great trout fishing. I can't recommend that place enough. It's catch and release but just spectacular large trout there and the views of the Canyon on the Colorado are second to none.
Also did some fishing in the Steamboat area. Always nice trout up there. Hit clear creek a few times just outside of Idaho spings. Some decent trout still manage to survive along I-70. I know a little private lake about 1.5 hours out of town that I'd be happy to point you guys in the right direction to next season. I'm talking monster trout there.
I'm sure some of you have fond memories of fishing at Cherry Creek Res and catching fish. Well I tried that atleast a 6 times this year and there just isn't jack in there. I hear rumors of people catching fish but I always ask all the fellas at the docks "Did you catch anything" and they all have that look of disappointment and they say "Hell no". I can tell they aren't bsing either.
The lake is fun to cruise a boat on but dont' expect anything more than that. If you catch something it's a fluke. I'd love to hear from someone who can prove me wrong. I'm all ears.
Anyhow, as football season begins I start to pack up the poles and the fly rod and break out the guns. My Rifle is calling my name. It's saying "psst Meck clean me". Take me to an Elk! Oh managed to get out Dove hunting and goose hunting a few times also. There are more Dove and Geese in Denver than you might think. It was my first year goose hunting. More of a challenge than I thought but I managed to down a few and smoked em in the BBQ.
Anyhow I'm curious to hear how you guys did this season and what you guys fish for or what hunting trips you have planned this fall.
Let's hear those fishing and hunting stories. :militia:

Trout fishing guy here, all in Canada. Bow River, Oldman River , Crowsnest River and BeaverDam Lake. Mostly Rainbows but on the Bow you can catch a few Browns and some Rocky Mountian Whitefish. Mostly on a bober and worm ( night crawler for you Americans) The real season starts when the lakes freeze. I love ice fishing. Saw the biggest Rainbow of my life in Duck Lake Montana . It was massive , broke my line and Im not sure i coulda got him thru the hole anyhow. But Ill be back for him this year.

Yeah you know somehow I just can't seem to get myself on a frozen lake to fish. Perhaps this year. With all the thousands of lures and crap you can buy these days there isn't much that beats an ole worm.
Heck alot of the times I'll ditch the fly rod for my standard rod and simply float a very small piece of worm downstream. I just love the feel of a nice hit!
I'd imagine that fishing regulations are more laxed up in Canada? For instance there are areas on the rivers in Colorado that are considered "Gold Medal Waters" where only artificial lures are allowed.
Do you guys have regulations like that up there?
Don't get me wrong this only makes up a very small percentage of riverfront that has those rules but I'm just curious. Canada strikes me as a place where fish are very abundant therefore less regulations would be in place?

Our regulations change by the time of year. Depending on the body of water.
I can tell you Ive caught 20 rainbows in a hout on the crowsnest river. Its at a town called Frank, famous for Franks slide where half a mountain fell off and burried the town in like 1910. Sucks if you lived there but half a mountain in a river makes for some fantastic trout fishing.
as for Ice fishing you can fish 3 rigs at once, get 4 guys doing that 3 of them drunk and its way fun. I had a buddy break his leg scrambling for his rig when he stepped in a hole. that wasnt fun but it was funny.
Never caught anything huge here in Alberta. When i lived in Saskatchewan and we would fly into lakes I caught a 21lb Northern and a 24 lb Lake Trout. Friends dad caught a 34lb Lake Trout one time. That was one big fish!

Out here you can fish with two poles max. Wow 24 lb trout. The bus is heading your way after football season for sure. I'm actually heading out to Whistler this winter for some snowboarding. Ever been to Whistler? Know any good fishing spots out that way? I realize Canada is huge but I thought I would ask.
I miss fishing In Florida.......no license fee if you fish from a fixed structure like a pier or the bank.........and I never got skunked on an afternoon trip down to the ole Banana River with a bucket of live shrimp and a 12er in the cooler.
I enjoy fishing the Arkansas River here, I dont really care much for lake the lakes........drive a 100 miles fight 60mph winds and then freeze yer ass off when the sun goes behind the clouds.......no thx.
I didn't get to go near enough this year :-[

brook trout(brookies) fishing in Grand County CO
earlier in july. not nearly as good as good as it was five years ago.
that highway going south (HGWY 50?)out of kremmling was great but you can't find a place to pull over these days.
as for Minnesota, well I haven't been fishing up here this year and been skunked. lots of walleye - and leaches as bait, which I am not used to, coming from wyo/Co. but I've been learning and there isnt really any lack of fishing holes out here.

Nice pics there slug! I forgot you moved on down to Texas. How is life treating you there? Sounds like the fising is great!
I havent fished around kremmling but like I said earlier I've covered the steamboat area. Just as you start to make the climb into Rabbit ears pass there is a little lake on right side of the road (not too far from kremmling) I want to say it's called mudd creak lake. It usually is packed full of stockers. Always worth a stop. Bring the mesquito repelent though.

Don't forget about Lake John in North Park (some really nice trout in there most years). If you ever get a chance to fish Steamboat Lake at ice-off try and do it. All the little feeder creeks on the backside hold big trout in them that are getting ready to spawn when the ice starts coming off. Lasts about 10 days to 2 weeks.
Lake Avery up from Meeker use to be a great place to fish also but haven't been there in awhile.

I did a ton of fishing this year, mainly at Lonetree and Chatfield. Chatfield has a great smallmouth fishery, during the peak of it this year we were having 50-100 fish days over off the dam face. Most are small, 10" or so, but there are plenty in that 2-4lb range to keep you interested. The skiers can really get on your nerves though, as many of them have no idea what courtesy on the water means.
Lonetree was great this year for a spell night fishing, but the spring weather really made it tough. So many windy days in May and June. Some really big wiper and walleye though, and we managed a couple days of pretty good largemouth fishing as well.
I'm itching for some hunting though. Only 10 days till dove season opens, and man they are everywhere this year. As long as we don't get a really bad cold front...keep your fingers crossed...it should be a really good opener.
Who knows what the duck hunting will be like, but if this goose season is anything like last years goose hunting, it will more than make up for it. Last year was superb, world class to be honest really. The NE corridor wintered 250,000+ canada's. Hard to beat. I will be spending my fair share of sunrises on the Platte, or in a pit blind this year. Hopefully about twice a week.
Here is a picture of one of the big wiper I caught night fishing.

Thanks Beerslug,
I have a buddy that got a permit for the arsenal. He has done good, but there are just to many damn rules for me. You have to go to an hour long "orientation" before you can get the permit, going over all the rules, where you can and can't go, etc. Than to top it off you can't smoke there, nor can you drink beer. That was the kicker for me, fishing without a stogie and some beer just would'nt feel right.
Quincy Resivour has some great Largemouth fishing though. Here are a couple pics from a few years back, I did'nt really go there this year at all.

Heck yeah Meck! I live in central Denver, and have a nice little fishing boat as well.
Would be great to have a spot a little closer to home for a dove shoot. I'll be heading out east to a private spot near Wiggins for opening day and second day, but I love chasing them the first couples weeks after the opener if the weather does'nt run them out.
Also, if you want to get together for some duck and goose hunting, by all means lets try and get together. I belong to a club, Colorado Waterfowl Association that has some excellent properties.

Yesterday, I went fishing for the first time in 20 years. My son is almost 4 years old and fishing just struck me as a good "father and son" thing both on the level where you bond together as you build a father/son fishing tradition and on the level where you're not being one of those dads that allows their kid to plunk his ass down in front of a Nintendo for 11 hours a day.
We had a great time, but I'm not very good at all. In fact (and this is true), my 4 year old caught twice as many bluegill as I did.
That said, I want to get better at it because I really do want to make this a father/son thing that we'll do for years. Do any of you guys who fish have any fishing tips that you wouldn't mind sharing? And, no, I don't plan on just going out for bluegill all the time...
bkhuntfish
08-24-2004, 09:30 AM
I think little bass and bluegill ponds are great for starting out, whether your a kid or an adult. I was raised as a trout fisherman here, and taught myself to be a warmwater fisherman basically on my own when I was 17 or so. Little bass ponds taught me alot, and got me into it without having to have a boat and a ton of gear.
I think the same thing goes for small trout streams using bait like garden worms or salmon eggs. They are great for learning how streams work, where fish hold, etc. and god knows there are thousands of miles of little rainbow and brookie streams in Colorado.
Small waters are just great for learning because they're not nearly as daunting as pulling up to a 1000+ acre lake, or a big river where the amount of unproductive water is much larger in scope. A big lake, you might have a bank that is a 1/4-1/2 mile long that is'nt worth a darn. Thing is you don't know that until you've fished it, or at least seen it up close from a boat or shore. If a pond has section that is no good, your probably looking at 50 yards instead of a 1000. Same with rivers. You can go long stretches on big rivers that just are'nt any good, but on a little brookie stream, you'll probably find a nice hole or run more often than not.
My biggest tip though is have fun with your kid. Make it fun for him, make it something interesting and exciting to learn. You do that and you'll have a best friend for a son the rest of your life IMO.

Absolutely!! I'll never forget the times fishing with my dad and other times with my uncles and my dad. Made me feel important to be with them when I was young. My dad never really tried to over instruct me now that I think it about and when I started catching more fish than him he was delighted and encouraged me all the more. And I felt a great sense of accomplishment!
Never will forget those days!!!!

I took my neighbor (he's 64) out about 8 miles offshore today and played guide. Eevry time I'd spot the tuna blowing up I'd race over there and have him cast into them. Although these guys weren't huge they were a blast to catch. Also caught a Kingfish and about a 40-50lb shark.

I don't know much about fishing and hunting. I just moved out into the wilderness. My pond has lots of deer and turkey tracks. The pond is stocked full of bass and catfish. I don't know what to do. It's a whole new lifestyle for me. hmmm... It seems like fun, but I'm missing the city already. But, I'm certainly enjoying the cost of livining out here which is next to nothing. :)

You are lucky if you don't have to live in the city!!!! Enjoy every minute of it.
Get yourself a fishing pole and see if you can catch any of those bass and catfish. If you don't want to eat them just bend the barb down on your hook so it's easier to release them and not damage them as bad.

You know I bought one of those darn things also and didn't use it this winter. Planned on it but at the rate the ice is melting off I think I'll just break out the canoe instead. I will say this about the ugly stick. They seem to be indestructable. I had mine banging around the back of the jeep all winter, piled junk on it and nothing happened to it. Any other pole would have snapped in half.

I am getting those fishing withrawal symptoms again. Time to hit a salty spot on earth.
Stripers and Bluefish will be "running" up the east coast next month, and my wife has a conference in DC. Might have to "piggyback a trip and head to the VA/NC coast.

Halibut in the Gulf area? I thought they were cold water fish. I'm thinking the deep sea fishing in that area would be more for sail fish, barracuda, marlin, etc. Halibut are bottom dwellers, and you usually drop your line to the bottom where as with most fishing in the Fla area you'd be trolling.

Bonefish would probably be good bait for cobia! Me thinks! When they migrate up the atlantic coast we generally used menhaden, spot and croaker as bait.
Where to find them and how to catch them ...
Cobia
(Rachycentron canadum)
(Also known as: Ling,
Lemonfish, Crabeater, Cabio)
The Cobia is a large, long, slim bodied fish with a broad depressed head, a protruding lower jaw. The Cobia is overall a dark brown color with a prominent dark lateral stripe that runs from the eye to the tail. Its distinguishing first dorsal fin is composed of 7 to 9 spines that are not connected by a membrane.
The Cobia is a sleek and extremely strong fish. They range in size up to about 135 pounds. The largest Cobia ever caught in Florida USA weighed about 104 lbs. An average size fish will weigh 20 to 40 pounds. Cobia are found around the world in tropic and warm temperate waters. They migrate so their numbers will very with the seasons. They inhabit the warm tropical waters in the winter and move to more temperate waters in the spring, summer and fall. They prefer water temperatures between 68 deg.F and 86 deg. F.
Along the Atlantic Coast of Florida, Cobia spend the winter (December – March) in the harbors and around the wrecks and reefs of the south Florida Keys. In late March, early April they begin their northward migration up the Atlantic Coast reaching Fernandina Inlet in late May, early June. Along the Gulf Coast, Cobia inhabit the Panhandle area in late February, early March. They travel southward along the coast beginning in April and peaking all along the Gulf Coast in July and August.
The Cobia is a powerful fish and a thrilling catch. It is one of the most sought after gamefish to catch. Once the fish is hooked the thrill usually begins by lots of line coming off a screaming reel and the inability of the angler to do anything but hang on!
Fishing Basics:
Cobia can be caught by spinning, plug casting, bottom fishing and by trolling.
Equipment for spinning and plug casting should be a medium to medium heavy rod and reel with 12# to 20# line. Cast lures in front of moving fish so that the lure is reeled across the Cobia’s path. Brightly colored, jigs Bucktail (in white, lime green, yellow) and noisy sinking or diving plugs are popular choices
Equipment for trolling or bottom fishing from boat, bridge or pier would be a medium heavy rod and reel with 20#- to 30# line (Minimum 200yrds.) 2 – 4oz egg sinker on line above swivel, 3’ 40#-50# shock leader with a 4/0 to 7/0 O’Shaughnessy hook. Use live grunts, eels, pinfish, bluerunners or crabs as bait.
Site fishing migrating Cobia is one if the most productive methods for using artificial baits and lures. They are spotted as they travel in shallow water, around pilings, navigational markers, buoys and anchored boats. They will also accompany other large fish and rays. Again remember to cast ahead of the fish so to bring the lure across its path and to work the lure with plenty of action as the Cobia comes near.
Once you get the Cobia to the boat, the battle may not be over. Exhibit caution and safety when gaffing and bringing the fish into the boat. They are a tough hard fighting fish and have caused anglers to lose equipment, be injured and have damaged boats. Get the fish into the box in a controlled, smooth, single motion.
Food Quality
Cobia rates among the very best in taste and texture of seafood.
Try a great new Cobia recipe today.

On the way back in the other guy caught some kind of 20lb "golden something or other" then I hooked into an (estimated) 15lb "blue something or other" but mine got off right as the dude was trying to "gaff" it.
Pictures to follow when I get the digital camera unpacked.

It's been 5 years since I've hunted or went fishing. That's a long time considering I grew up going out several times a year. Unfortunately I'm going to miss Aurora Reservior's fishing tourny in May by only a few weeks. My father nearly one it last year. He caught a Rainbow that was 5.5lbs but it somehow got out of his live-well. Never seen the man so heartbroken and disapointed.
So where do you fellow Coloradans like to fish?

I used to fish out at Aurora quite a few years back. I remember catching some nice rainbows back then.
Now mostly Blue Mesa and the Gunnison River. Mostly catch Salmon and rainbows with the occassional brown and lake trout.

Still hunting! We're in full blown Elk camp mode at the Ranch. It's been real busy the last few days.
Opening day Tom nailed a 5x4. I had my sights on 5x5 but he scampered down the hill where a freakin Texan drilled him. Then the POS had the nerve to ask me to help him drag it out! lol
Second day we tried another area no action.
Third day I took a shot at a bull. I must have barely nicked him as I saw just a faint blood trail. Followed it for a long time but I believe he's fine.
Fourth day I got my Cow! Young one but all the better for the BBQ!
We're finally taking some time off today but will get back to an afternoon hunt. We've got our hands full with meat processing right now.
I'm going to get my horse Touchdown into the mix. We've been killing ourselves hauling Elk. TD is officially the camp mule now.

I just went out this morning, put a 3/4 mile stalk on a slew of mulie doe and when I got down they were still there, unknowing I was there. Popped a nice mature doe at about 100 yards, dropped her immediately. Then the rest (more than I expected) of the deer started scatting up the mountain when a big bodied, smaller racked buck decided to make the fatal mistake of looking back to see what the hell I was, so good night Irene! Now have meat in freezer and can concentrate on elk after my little Jason is born.

So being the ever present genius I am, I got out and threw a rock at him to get him out from behind the bush so I could take a picture and I'll be darned if I didn't hit him! Got a good picture of him though which I will post when I load it up. Then about 30 seconds later, I saw another black bear, but he was at the bottom of the draw about 100 yards away. The area I hunt is full of deer been hunting it for about 10 years now, full of Elk in the fall but those guys hide up in the high country at this time.

Speaking of throwing rocks. Sometimes when I'm walking a ridgeline I'll stop and just for the hell of it chuck a rock down one side or the other. You'd be amazed how many times deer will jump up and take off that I had no idea were even there.

Hello all, welcome to another edition of The Life of Jeff.
So as all, or many of you know, I am an avid hunter, both archery and rifle. So my pops and I have been able to head out into the woods a lot together, just he and I, which has been pretty kick ass. My pops is pretty much my best friend in the world and now that I am old, it's cool that we have a strong bond! But I digress...
So we headed out this weekend once again to try to stick an elk but on the way out, it's pouring rain and the wind is blowing like 40 miles per hour, so we were contemplating turning around and heading back to the house and bag the hunting plans, however, we didn't and pressed on. So we hunted pretty hard in the morning, hiked a good five miles around the hills, to no avail, didn't really see any sign either. So after lunch we decide to hunt an area with a bunch of bogs and a ton of elk sign. We got out to our hunting spots pretty early in the afternoon, approximately 1.30 PM and were ready to kill critters. Considering nothing will be moving for some time, I decide to I nod off for a bit. BIG MISTAKE!!! As I awoke from my slumber, I glance over to the left and what do I see?? Between a tree that I had ranged out at 27 yards and myself walked a bear, not a huge bear, but not a small bear by any means. Whilst coming out of my grogginess, I try to determine whether or not I am dreaming or if this was real. Unfortunately is it was the latter. The bear was indeed real, and a mere 20-25 yards away from me and I came to the scary realiztion that not only was a bear that close to me, but judging by the hump on his back and position of the ears on his big ass head, it was a grizzly bear. With a million thoughts racing through my head, I immediately grabbed my bear spray and bow while standing up so he can see me and take out the element of surprise and in hopes to stop his advancement towards me, which it did. I figured, if he was going to come any closer, I would spray him with the bear spray and then fling some arrows at him if the spray didn't work. When I stood up, he looked at me, cocked his head to the side, focused and realized that I was there. Luckily, he wanted nothing to do with me and turned around and meandered away. My heart was about to pound out of my chest and I was shaking like a leaf. I can honestly say I don't think I have ever been so frightened in my life. So I took pictures and video of the area after the event, unfortunately I was too busy focusing on not ****ting myself to take a pic of the actual bear, but I did get good video shots of his paw prints.
To put in in layman's terms, a buddy of mine put it perfectly. He said, "dude, your encounter was equal to those who tell stories of swimming or surfing in the ocean and having a great white swim right past them." I don't think I could have put it better myself.
I was going to post the pics and video today but unfortunately due to circumstances beyond my control, that's not going to happen, I will try to upload them tonight and get them posted tomorrow.

I was planning on taking the I-70 and then getting off in Rifle at the 13. Since my area is GMU 23. I'm not going until next weekend if everything pans out.

Had a successful opening day/evening for rifle season today. Shot a Muley doe that weighed in at about 220 still intact, the b**** was having to drag her out about 2 miles up hill most of the way, but rewarding nonetheless! My mom and pops each got a whitey doe as well, so now that we have meat in the freezer, we can now be picky and try for a nice buck.

Must be nice. Pretty much all deer tags are by draw only here in Colorado. I do still have a cow tag for 4th season.
I usually draw a buck tag every other year. Still sucks :nono:

My pops and I were just saying that last night. He said, "just think, if we still lived in Colorado, we'd be done now."
I can't even imagine that, yeah, we're spoiled here.

haha, that isn't quite your normal cut, it's her heart.
well this year I have my deer A (either sex either species), a single region whitetail doe tag, and had two deer b (muley doe) tags but one is obviously accounted for. If I wanted, the land on which I hunt is in an area where they had a surplus of deer b, so if I felt so inclined, I can go buy five more. But considering I have all the others to fill yet, I will hold off on that. On top of all of those, I still have my elk tag as well which is good for either sex. Ü
Gotta love Montucky!

Nice, one of the biggest bucks I ever shot was only a 3x3 but massive.
I have been talked into going out 4th season with a cow tag.

Hmmm might have to make a stop there Steve.
I am going to take my new REI Backpack (just bought it last week) and hike up certain areas up there (near you) that aren't easily accessible and have some NICE trout...some have wild trout. Some of these lakes are 11,000 feet in elevation...so they won't be open till June.
I just want to get away from the crowds this summer, last summer I caught some fish, but I was fishing in some popular lakes like Eleven Mile, Spinney, Granby etc.

I don't want to jinx anything but spring seems to have come several weeks earlier this year in my neck of the woods. With that the runoff should be over by June and that means over 6 months of killer fly fishing!
I'm seeing big herds of Elk moving thru as well. Last years epic snow was tough and there was a lot of winter kill in NW Colorado. Just yesterday I counted over 250 head of Elk on the ridges around my place. I haven't seen that many in one herd in the three years that I've been here.
Good to see you still lurking around MP. Was wondering where you've been.

Lurking some. This place was (still is to some extent) like a poorly run daycare center. Armchair GM/Coaches everywhere made me go away for awhile.
Can't wait for these next few months, dave and margo are getting married in Hawaii in two weeks (going to do some sport fishing out there), we have a baby due in early fall, trying to sell our condo and move from the springs. Lot of stuff going on, 2009 proving to be a busy and enjoyable year.

Fishing tip of the day.....
Virtually every trout you'll catch in Colorado was a farmed raised fish. That means they grew up eating little brown pellets. Buddy of mine hooked me up with some homemade fishing flies that look like a fish food pellet.....lol
He made them out of pantyhose. Basically they are brown 1/4 balls. They look just like fish food, float like fish food, but land fish like worms!

I could see that for sure. I actually grew up on a fish hatchery. :)
Rainbows are starting to reproduce in the Gunnison river. Which is great. Still alot of native Browns in there also.
My tip of the day. Before baiting a hook with worms or anything even artificial equipment rub your hands in the dirt/mud on the side of the river.

Nice SSJ. Those seem pretty easy to identify.
Way back in the day I hunted for some in Ukraine with my family. Don't even recall what type they were.
I have hundreds growing around my place now but most of them are growing right out of horse shiat. I have no idea if they are poisonous or edible but they don't exactly seem too appealing to eat...lol
Got any advice on identifying poisonous mushrooms? I took a pic but can't put it up until I get home. After looking around the net a bit I think they may be poisonous. Kinda look the Amanita http://www.naturephoto-cz.com/photos/maly/amanita-phalloides-047.jpg at least in shape.

My advice....be careful....a liver is a terrible thing to waste.
I can identify maybe half a dozen different mushrooms that I am 100% sure about....other than that, I don't risk it.
The various edible morels, dryad's saddle, shaggy manes, puff balls, and chicken of the woods are all easy to identify for me.
Of course, psilocybins are nice to eat in moderation, but I have not seen them around here.

Here is a summary of my latest Canadian fishing trip last week outside of Longlac, Ontario. It is about a 14 hour drive from where I live in NW Ohio.
Left Friday around 2:30 pm. Drove to Wawa, Canada and spent the night in a hotel. Saw 3 or 4 moose that night while driving. It is scary driving at night in those parts, as you do not want to hit a moose and there are a ****load of them.
Woke up Saturday and drove to the cabins. Saw a few more moose and several black bears. Got there around 2 pm on Saturday. Got our motors and gear together and drove to a lake to fish for the evening. Fishing was pretty slow that day, 4 walleye and some small pike between the 6 of us. The weather up there has been very cold. High temps in the 40s and down in the 30s at night. Got back in time to watch the 3rd period of the Stanley Cup Finals at the owner's cabin.
Sunday: Windy and cold....don't think it hit 50 degrees. We fished a lake we have done very well at before. Fishing was slow (several small/medium pike) in the morning, but really picked up from 3 pm to 7 pm. From 3-7 me and my bud got into the walleye thick and caught 35 or so between the 2 of us. The other 4 guys did pretty well. Biggest pike so far were a few in the 30 inch range. Saw several more black bears on the drive to and from the lake. Had a big ass fish fry with potatoes and coleslaw.
Monday: We talked to the owner and he told us about a small lake that has not been fished in a long time. To get there we would have to put in another lake, motor up a little river for 11 miles, and then we would be at the small lake. We had to bring a chainsaw to cut down any fallen trees in the river, as nobody had been up there for a while. Took about 3 hours to get to the lake, as we had to cut a few trees blocking our way, as well as traverse some rocky water and lots of fallen trees. Saw numerous beavers, mink, a bald eagle, and some sweet Goldeneye ducks with ducklings. We got to the lake and it was pretty small, but had rivers coming in and out of it, which I love fishing where they flow in and out at the mouth. The one had some sweet rapids flowing into the lake and I knew we would pick up some nice fish there. Minimal weed growth to this point. Me and my bud Tom caught about 40 pike and a few walleye that day....biggest pike was only 30 inches, but the pike were all well fed and chunky. We threw a small pike back that ended up struggling in the water and was not going to make it. Then we saw a bald eagle flying and it landed in a tree and then closer in another tree. Then he started circling in the air for a few minutes and then he dove down and snatched the pike out of the water and flew off....pretty sweet. My bud Mark and his nephew caught a 41 inch 16 pound pike and a 35 inch pike, as well as many others in the 30 inch range. Dumb ass forgot his camera and had no picture of the fish, but he is as honest as they come, and I have no doubt he was being honest. Tim and Henry caught several pike in the 32-35 inch range, all well fed, and lost a monster at the boat. Saw lots more black bear and a moose on the way there and back. Supposedly mountain lions have made their way into that are that last few years, probably up through Montana, where they headed east through Canada. People have been seeing wolves (including a lone male wandering through camp that probably got kicked out of his pack) and a few lynx, but we did not see any. I drank too much Crown Royal and smoked some funky tobacco out of my bud's hookah. Had a monster fish fry (cajun style) with potatoes and some corn on the cob.
Tuesday: Made a big ass breakfast. Blueberry pancakes, hash browns, and sausage. Went back to the same lake. With everything clear, it still took an hour and a half to make it down the river and to the lake. I fished with my bud Tim that day. He caught 3 34 inch northerns, all super thick. I caught 3 or 4 in the 30-31 inch range and we caught anothe 20-30 smaller pike and 10 walleye. I caught a nice 25 inch walleye. The rest of the group caught several more pike in the 29 to 33 inch range. My bud Tom caught a 29 inch, 9 pound walleye....which is a damn nice walleye. He also had a huge pike straighten out his leader. I could hear him cussing from across the lake. Saw probably 15 black bears on the 20 mile drive back. That part of Canada is just thick with black bears. They love traveling those old logging roads that we use to get to the lakes. Ground up prime rib wrapped with bacon with some more fish and corn. I drank too many Molsons and smoked more of the hookah that night.
Wednesday: Henry and Andrew had to leave a day earlier, so it was down to me and Tom, Tim and Mark. It was a miserable day. Rainy and a high of 47 degrees. We went back to the same lake and the skies opened up as soon as we got there. We fished for about 6 hours in the pouring rain, and eventually we were soaked through our rain suits. Fishing was decent, but we were so cold and wet that it did not really matter. I did see a big golden eagle. Finally, we said **** it, and called it a day. Of course, we still had an hour and a half ride up the river to our truck. Everybody wished we would have called it a day hours earlier, but nobody wanted to say anything. I was soaked to the bone and my feet got soaked at the end when I had to jump in a few feet of water to get our boat on shore. We got back to the cabin at 6 pm and partied hard and had one last huge fish fry with potatoes. Got everything packed up for the drive home in the morning.
We left on Thursday morning at 7 am and got home at 10 pm. For the trip, blew through 12 cases of beer (Molson and Labatts), 2 big bottles of Crown Royal, lots of expensive cigars (the only ones I recognized were Cohibas), smoked out of the hookah every night. Mark won the big pike cash with his 41 inch pike, and Tom won the big walleye cash with his 29 inch walleye. Had a great time, but it is a hard work trip, and I am pretty tired today. The weather was very cold....40s during the day and 30s at night. A few of the pike we caught still had not spawned yet, which is really strange, as they should have spawned 3 or 4 weeks ago....we figure the cold spring had to be the reason why.

Thanks....me and my buds try and do a 5-7 day remote fishing trip in Canada every year.
I have done several fly-in trips where you are the only people on a lake for the entire week....but where we have been going the last 4 or 5 years is a lot cheaper than a fly-in and 95% of the time you are still the only people on the lake.

Me and some friends have discussed doing the fly in thing. I think we can add hunting to the experiance. I guess they fly your ass in and drop you off at a cabin on a lake and your there.

What was your first and second choice for the deer tag?
I got UNIT 23 (Near Meeker, CO) for all three tags, especially stoked about the elk tag. I've looked up the statistics and last season had a 56% success rate among hunters that hunted the area. The only drawback for this area, is that there are a crapload of hunters.

Prepare, prepare, prepare....you can only carry in so much weight, yet you can't afford to forget anything essential....for obvious reasons.
Ask for references and follow up on them. Fly-ins are not cheap. Do your homework. How was the fishing? Good boat and motors? Nothing would be worse than having a ****ty motor or a leaky boat all week on a fly-in. The fishing on a fly-in better be top notch.

I always put in for reg rifle season in area 551 2nd season. It is really close to my house. Its just a bitch to draw. Actually I used to draw every other year and got some great bucks but the winter kill 2 years ago was massive so they lowered the # of tags in the area.
my second and third choices were 551 3rd season and buck 551 muzzleloader.

My father drew a Moose tag on his first attempt in Wyoming a few years ago as a Non-Resident, it was a once a lifetime tag type of deal. Where if you drew the tag that was it for the rest of your life. Well my father got the tag and we go to Wyoming...come across some locals that are on their first Moose hunt. Apparently the locals have been trying for their moose tag for 18 years!
They were pissed to hear my dad get it on the first attempt as a NON-RESIDENT!

I've heard storys like that. I think in my case (3 ****ing years) it is much more to do with the hard winter awhile back.
I'll still wait my turn in 551 as I know the area and it can produce some really nice bucks. Honestly I'd rather hunt deer in 551 with my muzzle loader but that takes 5-7 years to draw.

You had to ask...ROFL!
So here's the deal. A buddy of mine passed away a few years ago and his old man recently gave me his fly box and he had some stuff I'd never seen before. The fly I was catching the fish on was one of these I'd not seen, and I've been to two fly shops to identify it but with no luck.
The best way I can describe it is it's a size 16, has a black body with some iridescent green then two very short white wings (triangular in shape). I must have caught a dozen fish on it. As soon as I get the name of it, I'll post it here. It looks more larva like than full growth insect.
I did catch some on joe's hopper and a green copper john (size 18)

Me and my buds are trying to decide between these 2 places for next year.
Both are pretty cush compared to what we are used to. It would be nice to be right on the lake and not have to haul your motors around and **** with unlocking and flipping boats over and in the water every day. The one place has 16 foot Lund boats and Honda or Mercury 15 Hp outboards.
I know some dudes that went to the 2nd link this year....and they caught 18 pike over 40 inches on their trip....and had the pics to back it up. Where we go now, catching one pike over 40 inches is considered pretty good.
Both are a lot further NW than where we currently go....one is a 20 hour drive and a short float plane ride and the other is a good 12 hour drive followed by a 5-6 hour train ride.
The further you go north, the bigger the pike get. Look at the pics....there are some giants at both these places.

Yep....I did a little pike fishing when I lived in Colorado, but never caught any brutes. I wish I would have spent some more time hunting them....but I usually went fishing for trout instead. There are some monster pike to be caught in a lot of the reservoirs.
I have caught 3 pike in the 40-42 inch range in Canada and several more in the 35-38 inch range over the years....but nothing like that 50 inch hog in the picture a few posts back.

That is pretty close to the size you have to release in many other states, as well as in Canada.
That regulation was put in to maintain a balanced predator population....those guys will eat a lot of smaller pike....more 26-34 inch pike equals a lot less smaller pike that can overrun a fishery.
More bigger pike and less smaller pike is better in the long run.

Seventy-seven years and counting. That's how long George Perry has sat atop the record books in the largemouth bass category, but he may be sharing his perch if a recently caught Japanese bass is as big as has been reported.
The story comes out of Lake Biwa in the Shiga Prefecture of Japan. The bass reportedly weighs 10.12 kilograms or a little less than 22 pounds, 5 ounces and measured 73.5 centimeters (nearly 29 inches). No girth measurements are available at this time.

To be honest SSJ I'm not sure what the name of the lure I used was but it was effect.
It's basically a floating green lure that dives as you real in. I also hooked a pike on a green wooly bugger. If it's green and moving in this stretch of the yampa it's going to get hit by a pike. I tend to have good luck with bright pink lures as well.

Holy smokes! Huge fish, I can't believe that's only a 50 pound fish, things a freaking monster.
And Meck, if you are reading this, I was curious if the Elk by your place is still fishable in the winter?
I usually still fly fish until around Nov but then the river freezes up. Ice fishing on the ponds is a blast all winter though.
So me and Rambo just finished with Elk Camp. We found a real old pine a-frame in the woods last year and decided we'd make it our camp this year. We hiked all our gear in about 1.5 miles. We built a nice fire pit right inside our tarp ghetto tent with rocks, a piece of steel, and a PVC pipe for air ventilation for the fire. It worked like a charm.
Ironically enough my girlfriend scored an old Aluminum Bronco blanket that we used to seal a hole by the door. It was perfect since it was throwback week.

We didn't spot any elk the first few days but we had plenty of fresh brookies to eat.

Looks like a fun hunt Meck. I'd post my pics but didn't go Elk hunting this year. No tag. Only Muzzleloader deer, antelope and Waterfowl so far. I am hunting Colorado for geese in December like I do every year.
