I'm a Johnny-Come-Lately when it comes to this PC title but DAMN what a great game! I just picked up Far Cry the other day from GameStop. I was borrowing my buddy's copy of Doom 3 but I got tired of all the darkness. Just want to see where I'm going!
My big anticipation is EQ2 sometime around Thanksgiving (I hope) but I'm not sure my rig can handle it. My buddy had the same fears too and that's why he upgraded to an AMD64 and the latest ATI video card. Being single with no obligations, he can afford to do that sort of thing! Me...well... Anyway, he had purchased Doom 3 since it was the latest in graphics and he wanted to test his machine for EQ2 as well (we're EQ junkies). He loved it and wanted me to try it to see if my rig could run it. It does, but not at the highest graphics level.
Anyway, I was reading that Far Cry also pushed the graphics engine and so I thought I'd give it a try to see how my rig might deal with EQ2-type graphics. Well, I'm happy to report it runs just fine (which makes me REAL anxious for EQ2). But while I wait for EQ2 I just wanted to sing the praises of Far Cry. What a game! It's incredible! The graphics are stunning, the AI is great...what can I say? Most fun I've had in a while with a game.
Anyone else play/played it?

Yeah it's a pretty good game. Graphically it was untouched until recently when I got the beta for CS:Source which runs off of the new Havok engine. HL2 is going to be awesome graphically and will stress out some comps along the way. I ran a stress test for HL2 and with my ATI x800 XT I get 90 fps for HL2. But yeah, Farcry is a great game.

What did you use to stress test your system? Is it something I can download and trial myself?

Nah, unless you have the beta for CS:Source. It's on the beta. It runs through the beginning of HL2 and averages out your frames per second. I saw your specs on the other thread and replied there. But in case you miss it there. You'll need to get a newer processor eventually. www.pricewatch.com has good deals all the time. Keep checking with them on processors. Your RAM and GPU are fine tho. I had a 9800 pro and it worked great on Doom 3, and Farcry. So it should handle HL2 just fine. You may have to turn AntiAliseing off tho. You made a wise choice getting an AMD processor to begin with tho. They are great for gaming. I'm saving up for the AMD 64 processor right now. Hopefully will have it in time for HL2.

Haha, I still have you beat there... well for awhile anyway. My 64 bit fx-51 is already getting dusted by the area-57 with 2 MB L2 cache rumors. That combined with the new 939 mobo's with Nforce 3 sounstorms on them will own... That's what I would save for...
I have been trying out some mods on Far Cry but if there was one failing in FC, its the multiplayer.
Can't wait for the FC expansion...

yeah yeah yeah blah blah blah. Yeah, only get the 939 chipset, don't get the 940. I was looking at the fx-53, but that area-57 sounds pretty, well, badass.

You really don't wanna know... You could get a nice 46" Sony Wega TV for damn near the price that the Mobo/Chip/memory will cost for that setup...
The FX chips are great btw... but kinda worthless still because of the 32 bit bottleneck that windows xp creates... Once the set drivers come out for the 64 bit edition of Windows, gaming will be better and more stable. Not to mention, incredibly fast and with huge bandwidth to support it.
There is supposedly a Far Cry 64 bit edition that is due out in beta by the end of the year. Problem is that the video card makers are slow to bring out 64 bit support beyond the alpha level and the cards are suffering in benchies compared to 32 bit sets...
By the time that Windows new OS "Longhorn" comes out in late 2005, it will be worth it to have a native 64 bit cpu... let alone an Athlon 64 fx cpu with 128 bits...
