If I were president:
I’d commit to Iraq & Afghanistan, as in – I’d still have troops there – but I’d work on getting nato or the UN in to do the policing action. In Afghanistan, I’d work with the coalition to work on building just the main roads and a main sort of power distribution & water supply (It may only include the major cities/towns and based on growth works it’s way out). Work on building schools that are not run by fundamentalists. That focus on actual schoolwork.
I’d pull a lot of the troops out of the bases we have around the world. Use the National Guard to secure our boarders. I’d expand our CIA and push for whatever I could for them. As for ‘local’ spying – it’s not an easy answer. I am against the patriot act, and firmly believe that we have the people and departments in place, just that we are lazy and pompous and didn’t think **** could happen to us. I think by changing policies with departments we can filter out and do just as well without big brother.
I’d have pilots with guns, and a ‘safe room’ cockpit. With the Nat’l guard basically being a cross between Nat’l police & military I think we could do pretty good with ports, boarders, etc.
I’d slash taxes – remove the IRS. There would be a 15% flat tax on gross pay (with a graduating tax scale for business). This would be pretty much the only Federal Income Tax that I would impose. The states in turn would have to set their own tax rates, if you don’t like state a’s tax laws – go to state b, etc.
Same way with laws, I’d remove some laws. I’d turn the war on drugs inside out. Could you declare war on your family? Instead of punishment I’d turn it to treatment based. I believe this would cut down on the crime (not by just removing people who would other wise go to prison). But I’d also like to legalize pot, and sell it in state stores, with far worse laws punishing people who do sell it, esp. to minors. (Say a $7k fine, and 3yrs in prison for first offense – and say 5yrs probation afterwards?). There are drugs that I do feel have no use, because they, are what I call ego drugs. In that they offer nothing than the fleeting high of that drug. Coke, heroin, meth – as examples. (I classify pot as no worse than alcohol – and yes I know hooch can ruin someone’s life – but do alcoholics go to jail just for having beer?)
I’d set standards for education, but remove the public school systems. Schools would now be charter based, but still must adhere to standards for education. However if you didn’t want your kid going to X school – you could send them to the school that reflects your choice. This would also remove the tax that supports schools, but you’d make it up by paying a ‘credit’ or tuition to the school of your choosing, which in turn would pay for teaching, etc. (this would solve prayer in school problems.)
I’d also like to try to put in some sort term limit on politicians. I’d also like to make congress classified as part time – and slash their salary down to $60k. Also all money given in campaigns would have to be documented, and there would be no corporate donations allowed. It would have to be private donations.
I’d also push for 65% reduction in petrol use in our country. I am not talking about just cars; I’m talking power plants as well. Through any alternative means; solar, wind, hydro – whatever – just get it done.
I’m all for space travel as well – I think that it’s important. But I want to have projects, not just send a camera in space.
So pretty much – states control programs like welfare, public works, etc (for the most part).
The Federal Gov’t would control basically trade & protection as well as PR.
I also want to rebuild our rail system. I’d like to have bullet trains, and ship more freight via rail. For those of you who think I’d kill truckers. I actually think it’d just be more ‘hubs’ – less cross-country truckers.
But it’s a start. But it’s what I’d like to see done here.
