DenFan loves to throw this pure marketing crap called The Darkness at me because he knows just how much I hate them.
The worst release and band of 2003, hands down...by such a wide margin, it isn't even funny....a living, breathing, actual Spinal Tap complete with all the cliche cock-rock moves, frilly clothes and an unbearable, ultra-gay, "just kicked in the nuts" howl guarenteed to clear a room in record time.
Yeah...but they raaaawwwwkkkkkk Duuuuuuude!!! ::)
C'mon...take my advice and go with Jet's Get Born instead, an infinitely better band with a vocalist who doesn't try to ape the very worst aspects of Freddy Mercury's operetic, no balls yodel and songs with chops that actually transcend the obvious influences, not just palely imitate them.
The Darkness are pure garbage, trash is too elevated a description for them.

I can't stand their 2 released songs, and most of their CD now, they are like a Nickelback to me, good song until I hear it a bunch of times.

Drakness is not marketed. They get away from all the stereotypes in interviews and such, they do not want to be a part of queen or spinal tap, they want to be themselves and I can't blame anyone for being what they are.
Justin hawkins is a great singer, 80's rock or not the guy makes the Darkness. His voice is what they are about and elevates the whole band because of it. 80's arena rock is out, but they've recreated it and made it pop again.

Whoa....Nickelback is a broken home whiner band, a more "rock" version of Good Charlotte than anything else....Jet doesn't wallow in self-pity like Nickelback does, a major plus in these parts.
I have yet to get tired of Jet...and I really like the stuff more and more because it lacks the cliche nasal vocals polluting most of alt-rock right now plus the material is solid.
I know it's all opinion anyways, but I have yet to tire of it...then again, it isn't played to death around my area either, so there you go.

The Darkness: By far the worst thing I've heard since Nirvana. How anyone can listen to those horrid, almost comical vocals and not get a hernia diving for the remote control is beyond me. The dude sounds like Tinkerbell having an orgasm. He's terrible. I've stubbed my toe on concrete and made more harmonious sounds that that sh/t.
Overall, the music is neither inspired nor inspiring. Basically another group of mass produced cheese whiz musicians. I can honestly say that if someone were to give me this album as a gift, I would beat the sh/t out of them. It's that bad. What I've heard of it, anyway.

They've recreated it allright. That's exactly the problem, the 80's cock-rock music was allright for it's time and bands like Queen were good, but Darkness are simply recreating it rather than "creating" something themselves. Why listen to Queen Lite (Darkness) when you can listen to the real deal original band?

I liked Badmotorfinger. I thought that was a really good album. AIC had some good tunes. Pearl Jam's "Alive" was really the only song of theirs I cared for. Temple of the Dog's "Hunger Strike" was also good. Beyond that...eh.

I never cared for either AIC or Soundgarden.
I liked "Hungerstrike" and "Say Hello 2 Heaven" even though Chris Cornell's annoying vocals come close to ruining both songs for me (now you know why I disliked Soundgarden)...I didn't have much use for the CD beyond those two songs.
I was on board with Pearl Jam with 10 and Vs. after that, from the disasterous Vitalogy onward, no way.
I liked Nirvana, The Afghan Whigs and the Screaming Trees....other than that, not much else from the whole grunge thing.

I think the Strokes transcend their influences Ames...you don't.
The Stone Roses were a great band, I absolutely loved them..brit pop at it's finest. Oasis on it's best day couldn't even come close to the weakest of the Roses material (not saying their was any weak material, mind you).
I think The Complete Stone Roses is an essential CD for any collection.

So the darkness isn't allowed to have influences?
What I meant by my post is that while they can be influenced by these bands, they are not some phony made-up band that is a rip-off of Queen. Same with my marketing thing that Ames took different, I meant that they aren't marketed to be the new Queen or Queen Jr.
About Jet, I meant that they are like Nickelback in the way that when I hear a song by either of them, it sticks with me but quickly gets old. There's bands out there that I can listen to over and over and over again do not tire of them, TOOL and Mudvayne being my 2 most probably. Maybe Jet is too soft for me or just not what I'm into musically, but I get tired of hearing their songs after a few times.

Hey, I liked Life, Sex And Death when it came out, but I also knew they were a joke that wasn't going to last long and admitted their trashiness...you probably don't remember them much...they were a semi-metal act that tried to ride the gimick of having a homeless mental guy as their frontman (named "Stanley")..they came off as a third rate, dirty Cheap Trick but I found them to be enjoyable enough....check out The Silent Majority if you can find that to see what I mean.....even then, they might not be too hard for you, but offensive enough to carry the day....Kinda like The Anti-Nowhere League in the pop-metal genre circa 1992.

I mentioned "Life Sex & Death"...does anyone besides me remember this stuff?? I thought they were pretty funny in a sick sorta way...check out this Trouser Press review of their only release:
LIFE, SEX & DEATH
The Silent Majority (Reprise) 1992
Few manufactured hypes have ever backfired on a scale as massive as the one that blew up in the face of this Chicago-to-Los-Angeles circus-metal act and the label that shelled out what was mooted to be a record-setting advance in order to sign it. Exploitive on levels even Malcolm McLaren would never have dreamed of, Life, Sex & Death was a sub-Jane's Addiction ensemble with a very dubious gimmick — a singer named Stanley, who (depending on which story you believe) was either a well-schooled poseur pretending to be a filth-encrusted, mentally unbalanced derelict plucked from the streets of his hometown or an authentic example of same. (This topic was actually hotly debated in the letters pages of several Los Angeles publications.)
Either way, the quartet proved so utterly sickening in action that its audio component didn't get much attention — The Silent Majority doesn't do much to encourage further exploration. The gravel-voiced Stanley (who was later revealed to be a well-traveled glam-metal singer named Chris Stann) alternates between fried stream-of-consciousness rants (like "Tank" and "Train") and puerile phallocentric limericks ("Big Black Bush" and "Wet Your Lips") while guitarist/mastermind Alex Cain regurgitates an endless stream of lackluster riffs retrieved from Dave Navarro's dustbin. For once, P. T. Barnum's axiom about underestimating the intelligence of the American people was proved wrong: The Silent Majority, followed logically by Life, Sex & Death, sank without a trace.
While I don't think it was bad as all that musically, it is pretty offensive stuff overall....as a curio, it's worth it for it's crassness alone.

Seriously Hogan, you're questioning people on how they can like the darkness when you have a Hives avatar?
The Hives are probably the greatest alternative band on the scene today for two reasons:
1)They avoid the pitfalls of current punk rock...there's no nasal, whining vocals (Blink 182/White Stripes/or virtually anyone on the Warped Tour), there's no self absorbed, pity me self-rightousness (Good Charlotte/Nickelback) nor political preaching (Int. Noise Conspiracy), they avoid insincerity (The Vines) and The Hives totally lack any hip hop influences (Sum 41).
2)They reach back and transcend the influences of the late 70's/early 80's punk. "Transcend" is the key word here. Other than just emulating the styles of the past, the Hives take the styles of mod, punk and hardcore and make them their own......very few out there in this style of music are doing that now as far as I can tell.
IMO, The Hives bring life to a genre that's become increasingly boring in it's sameness simply by being old school punks. They are arrogant, rude, exciting and they don't care about rampant capitalism, broken homes, hip hop, skate culture or whether Mall Rats or MTV like them or not.
The Darkness does none of this in the genre they're in....absolutely none of it at all.

I figured out the problem... you're getting old. ;)
The Hives, while catchy somewhat, are totally simple. It isn't pretty hard to not be apart of those bands that you mentioned when you take a lot of substance out of the music, and then make a product out of it.
I've always been bothered by that band, what made it worse as they became big around the same time as the Vines did, one simple watered down band was enough, they they go and start playing not only a simple watered down band but a simple watered down band that screams in a whiny ass voice.

There's nothing wrong with simple....I'll take three chords and a cloud of DIY dust over anything "complicated" or progressive...
Your substance remark is totally baffling...by eliminating the dross, The Hives are restoring substance to the music...it makes it's point without the flab and the BS showmanship...the very essence of what punk was about in the first place.

The Hives lead singer doesn't have the run of the mill, obligatory Warped Tour whiny MTV2 voice....and, unlike The Vines, they touch base and transcend their roots....they're closer to The Stokes more than anything else....another band that transcends their influences effectively (even though ames disagrees with that statement).
...and what you consider "watered down" I consider stripped free of unnecessary bullshat.

I also didn't know you liked Green Day also, thought they were one of the bands on your not liked list. I haven't a clue now what made me think you hated them, must be thinking of a different band obviously.
Good Charlotte wasn't bad in concert...I guess. Less Than Jake is a firey skacore band that suffers from the same problem (spotty releases)...I've never seen them in concert but have seen footage of them and ..yeah, it's about what I expected.....I'm still waiting for a compilation to sum them up...I'd buy it in a heartbeat if they ever release one.

I was a big Green Day fan back in the Dookie and Insomniac days, they changed they're sound and I wasn't much into them after that. Offspring was another band that did the same exact thing, them and Green Day were the big competition when Dookie and Smash were out, then both switched up and havent been quite the same since.
You going to the HOF inductions Hogan? If so, looks like me and you are gonna have to tip back a few cold ones and talk some music for awhile.

Most bands feel the need to grow beyond the initial sound...the change in Green Day was expected...sometimes it worked really well ("Warning") other times it didn't ("Good Riddance aka The Time Of Your Life")....that's the way it usually goes.
I don't care for The Offspring...too much of a joke band for my liking and there are too many joke bands to begin with IMO.
I'm not making the HOF inductions DenFan...due to all the travelling I'm doing this year and the annoyance this is causing my supervisors at my job, decisions had to be made...it was either the HOF or catching a game out in Denver, I chose Denver. I plan on making it out to Cleveland again in the future, maybe then we can have a few and discuss some tunes

Sounds cool to me, if I had to choose between those, I'd go with the game as well.
I like smash by the offspring, and even ixnay on the hombre was alright, man did they bug the hell out of me with pretty fly for a white guy. Only thing that song was good was the video, because some kid at our high school got made fun of all the time for looking and acting like the dud in the video. Little skinny white dudes wearing a bunch of gold with a FUBU jersey on with their hat cocked to the side just never appealed to me, so seeing that video and getting make fun of the kids that looked and acted like that was appreciated.

I liked that video but hated the song....not too many have the stones to make fun of hip hop culture in any of it's forms....I give them credit for that.

Nothing wrong with that, although at times they appear to be kinda listless
to me (the stuff I have heard from them anyways...which admittingly, is only one disc.)
