As expected, the Senate has approved a resolution specifically condemning white supremacists and neo-Nazis after last August's so-called "alt-right" rally in Charlottesville, Virginia turned deadly.

Democratic Sens. Mark Warner and Tim Kaine of Virginia introduced the measure along with four colleagues from both parties. The resolution, approved unanimously Monday night, recognizes a woman who was killed Aug. 12 and 19 other people who were injured after a car allegedly driven by a neo-Nazi slammed into a crowd of demonstrators protesting the rally in Charlottesville.

It now goes to the House and, presuming it passes there, to Donald Trump himself for a signature.

In his early remarks Trump balked at singling out those groups, blamed "many sides" for the violence. White supremacist groups see Trump as an ally, and those pointedly evasive remarks were widely celebrated by those white supremacists.

Lawmakers are seeking a joint resolution condemning white supremacy and Nazi groups as specific response to those remarks.

That is indeed where we are now, as a nation: The House and Senate feel it necessary to craft a joint resolution obliging the sitting president to sign his name to a condemnation of white supremacy and fans of genocide just to refresh his memory on where America, as a nation, stands on those things.

It is presumed that he will indeed sign it. But he might not, and that is why the House and Senate are testing the theory.

Good for them. Now, they can write a bill ending the War on Drugs (it's a social issue, not a law enforcement issue) and bring to an end all the damage it has caused. They could start by de-militarizing the police and emptying the prisons of simple drug offenders.

They did that in CA and property crimes skyrocketed in the areas those inmates returned to.

It's BS they waste time on bills like this. It does nothing to improve the lives of Americans. It doesn't make the country better in anyway.

Next up a bill that says dog **** stinks. We already know that white supremacy is to be shunned.

Great! Trump can sign it and put an end to what people think his position is. They should do an antifa bill next condemning them for violence.

Many of the same people who sign this hypocritical meaningless thing will vote for legislation that's favored by the white supremacist they refuse to confront and will likely refuse to impeach for his crimes against this country. They'll cow-tow to his racist base and continue to suppress minority voting strength, support gerrymandering local districts and designing modern day Jim Criow voting restrictions. Their resolution isn't worth the paper it's printed on. If they think this will make people forget what they're doing in abdicating their responsibility to get rid of this hate monger in the Oval Office they're sadly mistaken.

I agree that it's 100% BS legislation meant just to be able to move on and hope people forget race relations are at a low point. They should be working on the tax reform. Our corp system is behind the times. Bipartisan economists all agree we need reform. Sure they will fight over the numbers but they have to get started. We could end up with a corp system that brings home all the money overseas for a one time deal of say 5% tax. After that you drop it to 15-20% but make corporations pay tax on money made overseas. Obviously the left would fight to end a lot of subsidies which should be doable. In the end we make more money off corporations and offshoring investment still helps back at home.

No dumbass, just the one who says that Nazis "are very fine people" and the sick **** stains like you who support that POS. There is NO denying he's a racist, NO denying he's a white supremacist and NO denying all of you who voted for him either approve or that didn't matter enough to change your mind.

So whether personally are a subscriber to Hitler's ideology or not doesn't matter. If you voted for this sack of crap, you did so knowing what he is.

Own it.

that is the root of the disconnect here.

the statement "one side was white supremacists" is as unfair as it is inaccurate. a CORRECT statement would be "one side a decent amount of satellite racists and/or white supremacist groups that were surrounded by a ****LOAD of idiots."

at the end of the day, if fringe leftists can't help but to call every single person who a) voted for trump, b) voted against hillary, or c) lol EVEN ****ING ABSTAINED, a racist and a nazi... then they're sure as **** not going to shy away from doing the same thing here

Too bad that Congress can't pass any real legislation -- to get our economy and nation in better shape. When was the last time Congress had a real debate about an important issue? it's been years. I don't even remember.

The only bills that get passed are sanctions on some other nation or feel good bills like this one outlawing what everyone already agrees is bad.

It's a waste of time, a distraction from the real issues facing this country. This is being driven by the George Soroses of the world who want to keep us divided and fighting one another.

racist... maybe

misogynist... probably (most males are... tho most also have enough sense to deny it... or at least apologize for their most recent reported lapse)

xenophobic... not sure that's entirely fair, all things considered

either way, trump's 'temperament' is why some people chose not to vote. if you could have produced a better candidate, maybe things would have been different

Of course...we can't have white kids being influenced by Marxist, radical black ideology that race traitors like reformed racists might generate.

Rump hasn't changed a single aspect of his psychotic paranoia toward minorities. He may try to do like he did when he gave that fake-ass speech after Charlottesville, but just like he disavowed it the very next night, the dog will always return to his own vomit.

https://www.nytimes.com/2015/01/27/us/politics/kochs-plan-to-spend-900-million-on-2016-campaign.html

The political network overseen by the conservative billionaires Charles G. and David H. Koch plans to spend close to $900 million on the 2016 campaign, an unparalleled effort by coordinated outside groups to shape a presidential election that is already on track to be the most expensive in history.

The spending goal, revealed Monday at the Kochs’ annual winter donor retreat near Palm Springs, Calif., would allow their political organization to operate at the same financial scale as the Democratic and Republican Parties. It would require a significant financial commitment from the Kochs and roughly 300 other donors they have recruited over the years, and covers both the presidential and congressional races. In the last presidential election, the Republican National Committee and the party’s two congressional campaign committees spent a total of $657 million.

Hundreds of conservative donors recruited by the Kochs gathered over the weekend for three days of issue seminars, strategy sessions and mingling with rising elected officials. These donors represent the largest concentration of political money outside the party establishment, one that has achieved enormous power in Republican circles in recent years.

Now the Kochs’ network will embark on its largest drive ever to influence legislation and campaigns across the country, leveraging Republican control of Congress and the party’s dominance of state capitols to push for deregulation, tax cuts and smaller government. In 2012, the Kochs’ network spent just under $400 million, an astonishing sum at the time. The $889 million spending goal for 2016 would put it on track to spend nearly as much as the campaigns of each party’s presidential nominee.

Adelson is chump change in comparison.

Our inability to produce people with critical thinking skills and the motivation it requires to consistently define reality with them has reached critical mass at a time in history when they are needed most. Our own decline, possibly our very extinction is what awaits us because of it. Most tragically, it could be so easily averted, but we lack the will to do so. We've arrived at our defining moment as a species and the people holding the cards that determine our fate are largely unconcerned.
