Last friday we rented a couple movies. The first one was Runaway Juror, which was ok. Then I stumble into Bowling for Columbine, and always wanted to see it and never got a chance so I rented it too.
It was kinda of funny that both movies, even though they were completely different both were for better gun control policies. I swear I didn't know what Runaway Juror was about, but it was intersting.

Amen, AI sucked so bad.
I just saw Hellboy. Not bad. Nothing to get an academy award over and the end fight scene could have been a lot better but mildly amusing with a great occult undertone to it. Not a bad first movie, good set up for any sequels.
For the record, anything written by Kubrick automatically gets tossed into the "worthless pile of ****" category.

I rented TAXI DRIVER from netflix.
first time I've seen that one, I dont know why
it was great, but it did take away from all the spoofs I've seen of "you talking to me?"
for the role of Travis Bickle in the movie, DeNiero had attempted a mid west accent, every spoof Ive seen of him doing this particular scene they imitate his being a wop, heavy accent. but this wasnt the case. ah o well.
BTW Cybel Shepard was a beauty in this movie I fell in love with her (then not now) somehow moonlighting really made her ugly. what happened?

Hellboy... Sucked badly. I fell asleep on that one
The Johnson's Family Vacation Sucked.
Taking Lives... Good movie worth seeing.
Dawn of the dead... not the greatest but more interesting than hellboy!
Hellboy seems like a movie that was thrown together at the last moment. The storyline is terribly weak. He has no special powers that were established except brute force... The biggest problem I had with the movie is the fact that they tried to make hellboy a secret but through out the movie they did a poor job of convincing one that his identity was still a secret...

Brother Bear - bought this one for "movie night" with my three year old. What a piece of sh**. A lot of violence, a lot of insufficiently explained "spiritualism" (confusing to a child), a lot of bad behavior and bickering, and generally just a movie that I wouldn't recommend sitting down with your kids watching. By the time it was over, my son was fast asleep, my wife commented "One of Disney's worst ever," and I just wanted to punch Mickey Mouse in his face.
Gothika - Not bad, but not great. A good one to pick up if there's nothing else interesting on the new release rack.
Daddy Day Care - My wife picked it up and I expected it to completely suck... but it was surprisingly cute. Cheesy and hokey and predictable? Sure. But it was cute.

You must not be a Bob & Doug fan. Rut and Tuke (Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas) reprised their Bob and Doug roles very well in "Brother Bear."
A lot of violence,
You want to see a Disney movie that was truly stuffed full of gratuitous violence, check out "Atlantis." I think Bruce Willis must have directed that one. At least the violence in "Brother Bear" has a direct bearing on the movie.
insufficiently explained "spiritualism" (confusing to a child)
Most spiritulism is confusing to children. My kids ignored most of the spiritualism, and in this society, if they had tried to explain it any better every religious group in the country would be brutalizing them in the media.
a lot of bad behavior and bickering
Does your son have a brother or sister? Bickering between siblings is normal.
Don't get me wrong, I'm no Disney apologist. Most of what they produce is crap, especially their sad pathetic "direct to video" sequels to the great classic Disney films. I thought this one was much better than what they normally produce, and my kids who normally can't sit through a movie, watched from start to finish without complaint. I'm really glad Pixar has decided to part ways with Disney. It will expose Disney for the mediocre to piss-poor film makers they have become.
...you think so?....I though it was a waste of time.
Amen, AI sucked so bad.
Were you guys expecting a Sci-Fi flick or a Fairy Tale? Not trying to rip, I always thought AI was marketed very poorly. It was sold as a straight up sci-fi adventure when it was nothing of the sort.

ATTENTION: THIS POST CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR BROTHER BEAR. IF YOU INTEND TO WATCH THIS MOVIE, PLEASE SKIP THIS POST...
Personally, I'm not a big fan of the trend in "children's" movies to try to cross over to adults by including adult humor, banking on the fact that it is obscure enough for the parents to get it but not the kids. That Bob & Doug didn't engage in that sort of thing speaks very well of them and, in that regard, I'm glad that Disney showed a bit of restraint. That said, watered down Bob & Doug is about as good as watered down beer. I didn't find them all that funny - and I am very much a McKenzie Brothers fan.
Regarding the violence in Brother Bear, I honestly don't see what Atlantis has to do with it. That the violence has a direct bearing on the movie doesn't change anything about my opinion.
First, the youngest brother sets out to kill the bear. He wasn't hunting for food here, he was maliciously and angrily trying to kill something. That bothered me.
Second, the older brother dies while saving his younger brother and the reaction of the younger brother is go back out and, once again, maliciously and angrily try to kill.
Third, he finally succeeds in killing this bear and then is magically transformed into a bear himself.... whereupon
Fourth, the other brother now decides to angrily hunt down and kill a bear. In fact, brother #3 becomes downright obsessive in his quest to kill this bear - who happens to be his brother.
Fifth, they introduce the little bear... who, it turns out, the youngest brother was personally responsible for killing, for no other reason than anger.
These are not the kinds of things that I want to expose my 3 year old boy to. While I do not demand that movies teach my child about life (that's my job), I do expect that they keep their audience in mind when writing or considering a script. Had the script been altered so that the brothers were hunting I would not have had as big a problem with it. Hunting for sustenance is a healthy concept and a necessary activity. Hunting something for no other reason than malice is a trickier proposition altogether - yet that's precisely what Brother Bear showed time and again in that movie.
I didn't appreciate it at all - no matter what happened in Atlantis (which I'm also not a fan of).
You are correct that most spiritualism is confusing to children and you're also correct that deeply exploring it in a Disney movie would have had religious whackos up in arms... so it is probably better if you don't make it one of the central themes of the movie, is it not? In Brother Bear, however, Disney decided that it should play a prominent role.
Lastly, no, my son does not have any brothers or sisters (yet) and, yes, bickering between siblings is fairly normal... but that doesn't excuse the fact that throughout the vast majority of the movie the ONLY interaction between the siblings was bickering and fighting. Well, when they weren't hunting each other, that is...

Very true. Yet it was all in character. If the brothers were hunting, the story simply would not fly.

The native tribes of the Pacific Northwest lived a life of tremendous spirituality. To not give it a central role would not have been believable.
I hope you didn't take my first post on the subject as something personal or an attempt to "convert" you to being a "Brother Bear" fan. I just saw the film differently. As a writer, I tend to view everything from the basis of story (as I've said in another thread). Before your story can suspend belief, your characters have to be believable. A character who didn't feel anger (usually born of ignorance or guilt) towards something that has "done them wrong" just isn't believable.
I didn't appreciate it at all - no matter what happened in Atlantis (which I'm also not a fan of).
My comparison to "Atlantis" was not to point up that the violence in "Brother Bear" was justified, but that it was not just gratuitous. The script for "Atlantis" could have been left largely intact had they left out the violence. "Brother Bear" was based on a young mans idiocy and his journey to learn that love is just as important and powerful as strength, bravery or any of the other "virtues" he believed in.
Different strokes more than anything. ;D
I didn't think Bob and Doug got all that waterd down They weren't exactly "strong" adult humor as the McKenzie Brothers. Really, is "Take off, you hoser" something you have to shield the kids from? ;D

At theatres:
Spider-Man 2 - - very good
Day After Tomorrow - - blah
Van Helsing - - okay, if you don't expect too much
Troy - - blah
Rental (in order of my subjective ratings):
Monster - - Theron really did deserve that award.
Open Range - - a kick-ass western w/ one of the best movie gunfights, ever.
Mystic River - - Good, but not quite all that it was built up to be.
Brotherhood of the Wolf - - (Yeah, I know it's been out a long time) Not bad.
Cold Mountain - - Pretty good, but lost steam at the end.
Paycheck - - Interesting, but another weak end.
Underworld - - Dumb story, but some nice visuals.
Haunted Mansion - - Not funny. Not scary.
Cheaper by the Dozen - - Don't bother.
