View Full Version : Absolutely no girlie pics...

Taco John
10-18-2013, 01:42 PM
OMG what a headache...

Google has discontinued the ads on this site due to the proliferation of girlie pics strewn throughout it...

I have to somehow clean them all up before they will reinstate our account. That includes every birthday thread, every reference to boob mojo... you name it...

No more. Please report any girlie avatar or post - you name it. We have to be strict on this - this is what pays our monthly server fees and they are considerable...

*sigh*

Taco John
10-18-2013, 01:43 PM
If you have girlie pics in your post history, anything that you can do to help clean them up is much appreciated...

In the meantime, I will be deleting every birthday thread ever created on this site so that we can get Melissa Midwest out of our profile. Sad day for sure...

Kind of unrealistic if you ask me.

Is there another form add revenue you can look into?

To delete pics you've "attached" to posts, go to User CP and on the left side, the very last option (under Miscellaneous) is "Attachments". Pics are easily deleted from there.

So yeah, what if you never used that option? Instead you used code to post image URL's?

Does that mean all Tebow pics need to go to? He throws like a non atheletic girl who has to resort to other means (like racy pictures) to succeed? I kid.

Find all the girlie images (or all images) in the vbbs user repo on the FS or DB, and whack them. My guess would be vbbs doesn't store binary data in the DB, so you should be easily able to find the files on the filesystem. Hell, if it's half decent software it'll be a configurable option and you can just change repo directory.

15 minute process. Not pretty, but the alternative (culling all 10+ years of images through the app itself) is simply unrealistic.

If you don't want to delete all images in the vbbs user repo, get your horn dog on and browse through all the images and delete them one by one at the system level =P

Linked pics will require reviewing post history and/or editing/deleting images whenever we run across them.

update post set post_contents = regexp_replace( post_contents, '/^(https:\/\/)?([\da-z\.-]+)\.([a-z\.]{2,6})([\/\w \.-]*)*\/?jpg$/ ', '{whacked girlie pic}' );

Or something similar depending on how the embeds are encoded in the db

;)

Oh yeah.. requires Oracle, heh. YMMV with whatever db is being used =P

I will do what I can, but out of curiosity, we can only edit our stuff so far back right? Also, when you say girlie pic, this presumably does not apply to my wonderwoman "b..th please right?" Or okay if I post a picture of a girl in a halloween costume that while perhaps snug is not actually considered adult material since I pulled it off a costume website? Also the cheerleader pics are okay? I just want to make sure I remain within guidance in the future. for the past I will just delete anything I can regardless of what the picture is.

Ok, I don't post many racy pics but I will delete whatever I have. I am assuming that cheerleaders count as racy, specifically ones who happened to be practicing toe touches when the picture was taken.

Also if it is a linked image like the one I am referring to, if I delete the source image will that return a broken linked image and thus fix the problem?

No, just that google wins the internet. Google literally hosts billions of illicit photographs, .gifs, and videos. Yet they harp on websites like the mane to take down inappropriate content if we want to continue to suckle on the advertisement teet. Double standard much? Yuk!

Taco you gave us one option and that's bow down to google? Really is that the only solution you see here?

For the record I don't see girlie pics as a huge deal but for a trillion dollar corporation to kill basic traditions of the omane like posting a girl with a cake on a member's birthday thread?

Do we have no balls as a community? How much cash do we need to tell google to go **** themselves for a year?

Taco you are a creative guy. How many people have businesses here that might consider running an ad to offset server expenses?

Is google the ONLY way to keep the omane going? Or is that just the easiest way?

Is there any other company that has something similar to google ads?

Maybe it's just the way the world is going. More taxes, more fees, more regulations, less freedom of speech, more restrictions on guns etc. Heck it's almost impossible to buy a bullet for a .22 rifle. Now a guy can't go to a Broncos game and post a picture of a damn cheerleader on a football board? Really?

Dude, it is going to take a monumental effort to clean this site and satisfy Googles unrealistic expectations. They will just find another way to cut ads, this is their MO. They know there about 100,000 more sites joining adsense so they don't care.

The problem is, they have the huge majority and the other revenue sites pale in comparison to revenue. Let us help fund this community we all belong to and utilize daily. Heck you don't have to even create a set fee, just throw up a monthly server campaign and let people donate what they feel is fair.

I bet the community can help without it being mandatory. Heck if enough funds are generated that are in excess of the fees then have a contest for some Broncos swag, the only members eligible are those who contributed.

I am sorry you have to deal with this bull****.

This clearly isn't going to work -- think of all the posters who used to be active, but have stopped visiting the site for various reasons. Atlas, for example, must have posted THOUSANDS of racy pics during his time here, but has been AWOL for quite a while now. Who's going to scrub all of his photos? Also, there are deceased posters (Crazyhorse and Watermock, to name two) who won't be able to clean up their post history.

Which means that logically TJ only has two options:

1) Manually delete ALL photos ever posted to the Orange Mane;

or

2) Say "**** You" to Google, and figure out a different way to recoup operating costs.

It's as if there is a game of poker going on. Taco has a bill. We don't know how much it is. The omane is saying we have cash. Taco doesn't know how much and how consistent it is. We've done the donation drives in the past. Maybe they have failed miserably. Everyone is holding their cards and not putting them down.

Sounds like the omane wants to tell google to jump in a lake. Sounds like Taco is exploring how to do that.

Just my opinion and trust me I've been told my opinions suck on this site a couple thousand times :) but sure seems like after 13 years the community (if this is a Broncos fan community and not google community) we should be able to keep SSJ's omane birthday tradition alive for example.

Agreed - but there are even larger issues at play here:

1) it is literally impossible for us to manually "scrub" all of these images from the site. Where does that leave TJ?

2) Google has imposed stricter censorship on the OM then they do on their own Image Search results. Is this fair? Should we all just roll over and 'obey' them because of the Golden Rule? ("He who has all the gold makes all the rules.")

I'm willing to put my money where my mouth is -- is anybody else? If 20-30 of us pony up, then the cost shouldn't be too prohibitive....

Of course it is, we tried to come up with some solutions to help out, but they were ignored.

Many people have offered to kick in some money to keep this place free from censorship and rigid rules.

I know what it costs for server space/maintenance and I know that there could have been alternative solutions.

I hope Google is kicking Taco enough money to make it worth allowing them to set the rules and guidelines for the entire Orange Mane community.

Yep, I like this idea. I donated to a free message board I used to frequent years ago. You got a little icon next to your username that showed you were a "Pal" (that's what it was called). You got access to a "Pals-only" forum. You got to have a signature and also a larger avatar size.

The OM as we know it, free and beautiful, would still exist as it does now. Because I know TJ doesn't want to make it a pay site. But those little perks would bring in (perhaps) enough donations to keep the site running.

EDIT: I think there were 4 levels...platinum, gold, silver, and bronze. Different donation amounts and of course, better perks the more you give. But again, the basic premise of the message board was still free to anyone and everyone. Just like now.

I could be wrong but Google is not coming on the site and looking at any pics. What they are doing in monitoring the links to the pictures. So if you take a hot chick in a bikini from a church site and the same pic from a porn site Google will only have a problem with the one from the questionable site. Of course when you google images a lot of them come from more risque sites even if the picture themselves are n't that bad.

So I would believe just regular pics of cheerleaders, actresses and the works would be fine no matter how scantily clothed they are.

Of course I do not know any of this for sure but it is the only thing that makes sense. My site was flagged and shut down for a time because of the Kyla Cole pictures even though she was wearing a bikini.

I appreciate that people have ideas, but I have to say that I'm surprised that there are people who think that I should publicly disclose the financials of this place. That would be insane. I can't imagine anyone I know doing such a thing.

I have squirrelled enough away to cover the server fees for the rest of the season, and am examining options. My first option is to clean as much of the content as possible and give Google's algorithms another run at the site. They've been a good partner for this site, all things considered. They pay regularly on a predictable schedule, and it's typically been enough to either break even (in the Summer) or cover the nut under a few inches of snow (in the winter).

If Google's algorithms don't let us back into the compound, there are other servicers that I've got lined up. But as I said before, the concern is that we run into the same problem with whatever servicer the site goes with.

As far as it goes, though, Google is enforcing a rule that we've always had, but were more lax on than their big data algorithms are. We've always had rules against the silly waves of "boob mojo" and what not. Before, I tried to redirect that energy into the Horses Butt forum. And even then people complained.

For my part, I don't believe that a sexy avatar here or there is going to be a big deal once we get past the initial issue. But we'll still have to actually enforce the rules against picture such as Melissa Midwest. Which is a shame, to be sure, but if this site can't absorb the loss of Melissa Midwest... well... I don't believe that's the case.

This site is about building community around one thing and one thing only: The Denver Broncos. Everything else is secondary to that main cause. Unfortunately, to do that I have to keep my eye on the incoming and the outgoing. Running a popular forum isn't free.

I understand that there are people here who think that a pay or donation model would work fine. And they might be right for the short term, but I've learned that model only goes so far. It can't be planned on. It's not steady in the same way that I can look at a google analytic projection and plan things like software upgrades, or paying a geek to help out with server optimizations.

That said, I appreciate that there are people who want to give back. There's a thread which details how they can do that: http://www.orangemane.com/BB/showthread.php?t=9094 - It's not required. I've never been comfortable with it, mostly because at my heart I'm a kid from Idaho potato country who has self sufficiency in my DNA. The thought of people out in this economy taking money out of their wallets to help me keep a server up strikes me funny. Though, I have to say, every time that it happens, I feel an amazing sense of gratitude that people enjoy the efforts here enough to kick in.

Again, I really don't see this as changing all that much outside of a few side amusements. I mean, who didn't like seeing Melissa Midwest every other day? But this site has always endeavored to operate in a NSFW capacity to accommodate people who are surfing the place from work - which constitutes the strong majority of our traffic. Ratcheting up the enforcement of a rule that we've always had in place but sometimes didn't have the fortitude to enforce is kind of a bummer, for sure. But it beats not having a reliable income stream. I'm just trying to keep this thing going so that we have have a site tomorrow, next year, and ten years from now.

I honestly had no idea that the happy birthday girl was a porn star and that her name was Melissa Midwest.

I'm more conservative than most I would say, and I actually think overly strict rules of "no girls pics" probably isn't a great way to go. I am not for porn or objectification of women, but I don't believe going nuclear on all girl pictures makes a whole lot of sense for a football board. Just my thoughts.

I'm still very much confused by the need some people seem to have to post half-naked women all over this place in some threads, or to include anything similar in their avatar.

Do those people still have swimsuit magazine posters hanging above their beds?

I would agree. I think I probably over corrected. Our server fees aren't trivial, especially in this economy, and as the tone of the thread title shows, after having two appeals denied, I probably overreacted.

At this point, however, I just want to give a good effort in giving an appeal one last push. I don't think it is things like avatars and cheerleaders that the algorithms are catching. It's more like the risque stuff like images of a porn star two pictures before she loses all her clothes, and other such questionable images. The stuff we want to filter out anyway.

The problem is that Google will not tell you what is being violated and where. They are notorious for shutting people down and not telling them the exact offense. They say it is part of their secret sauce and can't give that away. It's BS, they just can and do wield their mighty sword.

So TJ has to be strict so that he can get back to the revenue only Google can bring.

I also find it funny that people are demanding TJ show his financials. He isn't a non-profit. He also doesn't charge anyone to come here. So why in the hell are people demanding revenue streams reports.

I think the people that wanted to see what it costs to run the place wanted to try and help and wanted to contribute to keep a community they enjoy and have been involved in for a long time as free as possible from corporate bull****.

It's clear that Google kicks in enough cash around here to call the shots. Nothing wrong with making a profit, that's what our country is all about. Google pays the bills and then some. Google is the Mane's sugar daddy and that's the way it is.

A lot of people are making this all about wondering why people are upset about not being able to post pics of semi-nude girls....and they are missing the greater overall point.

The overall point is that many posters oppose this corporate bull**** infringing their rules on a community they have been involved in for a long time. They don't like someone coming in and setting the rules for them....someone whose never participated in one thread on this board. The Orange Mane is simply a small site amongst their thousands and thousands of larger or smaller sites to them....a line amongst thousands of other lines.

So sorry if some people seem upset and want to try and maintain some say in a community that they have spent countless hours in over the years.

It's not about not getting to post pics of chicks, which sucks, but it's sucks more knowing whose calling the shots around here. I liked it more when I thought Taco and some mods were calling the shots, as they were members of the community. Not some Google bull**** laden blanket rules.

**** it, I'm probably just overreacting as I don't like to see **** like this happen and have rules enforced by some lame corporation....there's just something about it that stinks that I don't like and it sticks in my craw.

Google isn't dictating what we can and cannot have here, dude. They're dictating what we can and cannot have here if we want to receive money from them. I'm supremely anti-bigasscorporation, but it seems to me like you're indeed overreacting. They're not setting the rules, they're setting their terms.

I don't understand any of the resistance to this, honestly. It's so black-and-white. You'd turn down dependable, constant revenue simply for the ability to post a bunch of pictures that might be titillating to a twelve-year old boy?

Google: "You can have our money, but we're not going to give it to you if there are a bunch of what we have deemed to be indecent photographs on the board."
You: "You're not the boss of us! We can do what we want! Those cheesy half-naked women are essential to our community and our ability to have an enjoyable message board about sports and other topics!"

I don't get it.

I stop and look at said hot chicks in avatars, and posts.

I READ the Omane because I like to waste time.

When I'm not sitting in my underwear and drinking beer, I'll send TJ a little money. Or maybe I'll make a beer and dedicate it to the Omane, donate a portion of the proceeds.

Most fund raisers usually have a target. How does a community know if it's pulling it's weight via donations if there is no goal? I think that's what people are saying. I think this is the reason why the donation model hasn't worked all that well here in the past but just an opinion and I really don't know. If google clicks is where the party is at so be it. Nobody was suggesting TJ lay out his tax returns!

Like anything else in life people value something more when they have skin in the game but maybe that doesn't apply to messageboards and it sounds like TJ isn't comfortable going that route.

If there are other options beyond google all the better. I really don't give a rats ass about the girlie pics so much as the principal of a huge internet giant pushing around what was once a kinda wild community that had watermocks, that had a little edge, that WASN'T like most official team message boards.

I appreciate that people have ideas, but I have to say that I'm surprised that there are people who think that I should publicly disclose the financials of this place. That would be insane. I can't imagine anyone I know doing such a thing.

Speaking for myself, I had no interest in knowing the financials of this website. Other people were throwing out ideas, so I thought I'd mention the donate/membership stuff, because I know it is something that has helped out other sports boards in the past.

Don't know if it would help this board out or not, because I have nothing to compare it to. Even if you threw out the financials (which I wasn't advising or asking for), I wouldn't know how that would compare to those other boards that have used that tactic

Don't know the thought process of everyone else that suggested donations, but for myself I wasn't trying to say that donations can replace google ad sense or other ad revenue.

Was saying that the donations could help cover some of the cost of the board, while also allowing a Club Member board for people to post "girlie pictures." It is my understanding that with Google adsense, you can choose what sections of your message board where you want ads to display. Is that incorrect? Is there anything stopping a message board from having ads on every forum, but one? And would that one forum, not receiving any money from google, really be something google would object to?

First and foremost, I joined this message board because it's the best Broncos board on the internet. For many of us, the occasional half-naked woman enhances the overall experience. Therein lies the objection.

Half-naked women enhance everything. When they become a risk that could possibly cost you the ability to enjoy this place, however, it's absurd to continue to freely post them and complain about any restrictions as though the pictures are essential to the boarding experience and available nowhere else on the internet.

If we're past that, I apologize, but the mere fact that it went this far still amazes me.

Solution 1:

Two browser windows. One with the mane, the other with your favorite half (or fully!) naked women on it.

Solution 2;

Any of a multitude of browser plug ins that let you replace ad content with whatever you want.

You know, if you're really the hard up to find porn on the internet.
