New Miss America's Indian heritage sparks racist comments

The crowning of the latest Miss America has stirred up the ugly side of social media.

Miss New York, Syracuse native Nina Davuluri, won the crown Sunday night, and as soon as she did, Twitter lit up with comments suggesting she was an Arab, a foreigner, and a terrorist with ties to Al Qaeda.

Why the hate?

Davuluri, who aspires to be a doctor like her father, is the first Miss America whose family comes from India. Her win also happens to be the second consecutive victory for New York, but that got lost in tweets by people who couldn't look past her skin-deep beauty.

“Congratulations Al-Qaeda. Our Miss America is one of you,” tweeted "De La Rutherford," or @Blayne_MkltRain, who has since pulled down the full Twitter profile.

Many individuals who ranted over the Miss America decision pulled down their Twitter pages after media sites posted their comments. Luke Brasili pulled down his profile after he tried to connect Davuluri's win with the September 11 anniversary.

"9/11 was 4 days ago and she gets Miss America?" he tweeted in a post @LukeBrasili.

But Nick Puzzo kept his site up, using it to defend himself against people who reacted angrily to him tweeting, "So miss america is a terrorist."

The liberal Miss America judges won't say this - but Miss Kansas lost because she actually represented American values. #missamerica

Meanwhile, Todd Starnes, host of Fox News & Commentary, blamed the win on a "politically correct" panel of judges, according to a series of tweets.

"The liberal Miss America judges won't say this but Miss Kansas lost because she actually represented American values," he said in one post.

Davulari, for her part, embraced her heritage in the talent portion of the Miss America competition. She performed an Indian dance fused with Bollywood moves. After she won her crown, she dismissed the online remarks disparaging her heritage.

"I have to rise above that," she said, according to the AP. "I always viewed myself as first and foremost American."

"The Miss America Pageant still exists?" jokes aside, this is both sickening and hilarious.

Sickening because, well, you know...

Hilarious because..."liberal judges"? LOL Most liberals I know don't want anything to do with it and would just as soon see the thing cease to exist.

yeah, the "politically correct" thing a liberal would've done was protest it by not being a judge.

Did anyone say it represented everyone?
the topic from what I see isn't whether it represents everyone but that racism is still alive and well in this country.

The ironic thing is that if an American won the Miss India pageant there would riots and political posturing and bills ensuring that it would never happen again. Read that from comments by some prominent Indian-Americans. Basically saying that Indians where just like the racists Americans, just with different skin tone. Also went on about the not-so-subtle and blatant prejudice towards dark Indian skin tone, how skin lightening is expected especially to succed and once successful, and that our Miss America would never win the Miss India because she is to dark. Fair & Lovely brand is huge in India. Oh the ironies of ironies of everyones outrage :sunshine:

No thanks. I don't even like a heavy tan on white girls. Just an attraction thing...not a big fan of blondes, either.

Geez, yet another stupid thread. Major news story racism hasn't been totally eradicated. This kind of stuff has liberals handwringing. Black conservatives face that crap all the time, but there doesn't seem much outcry though when it happens.

Pictures of black voters make whites more likely to support voter ID laws
A new academic study suggests that white people are more likely to support voter ID laws when they're shown a picture of a black voter than a picture of a white voter.

The study, which was conducted by two University of Delaware professors and a Pennsylvania high school student, was fairly straightforward. It asked people whether they supported or opposed laws that required people to show a form of government-issued ID at the polls. Some respondents were shown a picture alongside the question, of either a white voter or a black voter, and others weren't shown a picture at all.

The researchers found that black and Hispanic respondents were about equally likely to support or oppose the laws regardless of who was featured in the picture. And white respondents were as likely to support the law when they saw a picture of a white voter as they were when they saw no picture at all. But when the picture alongside the question showed a black voter, more whites supported voter ID. http://www.vox.com/2014/10/14/6975013/voter-id-law-study-race-white-black-2014-election
