How certain (0 = completely uncertain, 100 = 100% certain) are you that the **** is about to hit the fan and humanity as we know it will utterly collapse?

And when?

Go on, baja - give full reign to your catastrophist, pessimistic, paranoid and misanthrophic fantasies...

You've altered your lifestyle to a significant extent based on the piffle you read from whack jobs on the intertubes, but aren't willing to justify any of it when given the slightest whiff of skepticism about it.

Sad.

And you know that exactly how?

I do what I want when I want more than any person I know.

Aquaponics is very cool. Wish there was a way to do it with saltwater fish. I much prefer the taste of fish from the sea.

Funny all these years on this board and you don't have a clue as to who i am.

Maybe that holds true for all of us.

Wow not much to contribute in this forum except insults. Maybe you should head on back to the main board and continue with your really bad football takes?

Aquaponics is an amazing way to grow your food.

Why is it the valuable information threads are the ones WAGS runs to the derail seconds after they are created.

Maybe he gets a bonus for derailing threads than can actually empower people toward self sufficiency

I guess I'm thinking in terms of bartered goods in a shtf scenario. I have fertile land with multiple year round water sources, am armed to the teeth, have stockpile of meds and medical supplies to go with a modern surgical training, and endless supply of game to eat. Trying to convince the wife that a stockpile of whiskey and cigs would be more tradable than just about anything. She's not on board because neither of us really like whiskey outside of cocktails, and we don't smoke.

Yes they are highly tradable items, add coffee or any addicting substance.

Decent aquaponics set up. This particular set up is more for warmer climates though.

I don't understand the appeal of precious metals in a shtf scenario. Seems like they would be less useful than cash, the latter of which could be used as toilet paper and a combustible fire starter.

Thanks Meck. I can't believe I am just now learning about this. Actually Josh tried his darn best to get me to look into this but for one reason or another I never did.

Gold never goes to zero. It's a store of value (like land) and it can be used as medium of exchange for large purchases like land. It's more portable than land, but it's more finite and eternal than cigs and whiskey. I even think whiskey would be plentiful with all the moonshiners.

For those of you in CO and those looking for a reputable company to purchase wares from - I really like http://www.theaquaponicsource.com - I had a chance to meet and talk with the President and she gets it.

Check them out!!!

Great wares, and great knowledge. Their kits look great too.

Efficiency is great, but rarely does the most efficient technology scale. A bike is vastly more efficient than a car (and in many cases not much slower), but will never, ever replace the functionality of a car.

What you have to demonstrate is whether or not this tech scales. We've talked about this before.

it scales super well, if it didn't the ford foundation wouldn't be looking at putting 50k acres under glass in detroit.

there are challenges, but it IS realistic.

I suggest you play with some smaller hydroponic systems to understand the concepts.

You couldn't do 1,000 hectares of wheat with this concept, but it certainly works as a piece of sustainability at the household level. You could also include a few chickens and ducks (compost their droppings) and goats for milk and cheese (and weed eating). Rabbits are extremely doable too. Beef is on a whole different level of production and cost. I'd love to have a dairy cow, but that's taking the cost, and labor, up another notch as well.

For greens & small fruiting plants (think cherry tomato) - it is very applicable.
