Here's lookin at you, Kid A

I haven't made one of these threads in a while and I'll spare everyone from my recent deep house obsession but I have moved towards a lot of dancier stuff in the last year initially for the gym then I went to Berlin then I started to realise that this scene in NY is where all the hot chicks that like to get ****ed up are. I'll make a separate thread for non-dance tunes (zero weird 80s revenge angle) if someone doesn't do it before me.

disclaimer - DUBSTEP, DEADMAUS AND SKRILLEX NEED TO BE LOCKED UP

I dont mind dance music when I'm out and about. As in, out dancing*...

Hot college girls like dance music, therefore so did I - in college.

"Out dancing" also reminded me of this clip:

My boys listen to skrillex, etc. They even went to EDC last summer in Vegas. I'll tolerate that stuff in the club, but I can't just listen to this stuff in my car or on my headphones like they do. They can't get enough.

True story - Skrillex started out as one of those whiney Emo kids:

Electronic music is getting massive in the states now. The problem is a lot of it is the auditory seizure known as dubstep. Yeah skrillex was some scrubby emo kid that would beg for drinks at bars and then obviously worked on his stuff and blew up.

This article was pretty awesome - http://www.vice.com/en_uk/read/rave-culture-a-handy-guide-for-middle-america

There are no rules except no dubstep! Up to you guys. I liked that song when that album came out years back. They've got a new one coming out in March I think. They could've been famous but they just don't care.

I like that Req. Any Todd Terje fans?

The only thing I like about EDM is that keyboard Manufacturers are making and selling more analog gear. Korg reissued the MS-20 in response to the use of Analog in these types of productions.

I am already tired of the Super Saw type stabs used in every uptempo tune these days.

I'm digging more downtempo/ambient/proghouse stuff a la Sasha & Digweed's classic Northern Exposure 1. If you guys have some suggestions similar to that I'd like to hear em.

Sasha has some really good releases
Airdrawndagger is a fav and Invol2ver

some of the older and various producers' Global Underground releases too

And yeah, dubstep is pretty much teh suck.

You would be better off listening to Kraftwerk.

You guys should check out Jean Michel Jarre's Oxygene great synth album, Equinox is not a good but still a great synth album.

I like Synergy, Larry Fast (of Peter Gabriel Fame) band. Games is very good.

Vangelis is awesome, Blade Runner, Antartica, Chariots of Fire, Doesn't get any better than Vangelis. I read a story that said Carl Sagan heard Antartica and had to have Vangelis do the sound track to Cosmos.

Wendy Carlos's Switched on Bach should be in every household. She did Clockwork Orange also.

To me this is real Electronic Music

Shockingly, no. I dont. Even when I was younger I tended to avoid clubs because of the music. I figured if I was going to wake up the next day with a headache and missing items of clothing and covered in one of three mystery fluids; that I would prefer not to have a jarring beat stuck in my head on top of that.

I listen to some that might be classed as dance, like Goldfrapp, Daft Punk, Oakenfold, BT, and She Wants Revenge, but mostly I find the hyperkinetic beat of club music too fast. It doesn't work for me.

I'm more into trance (Massive Attack, Amorphous/Androgynous, Future Sound of London, Juno Reactor, Delerium) and European EBM/Industrial (Covenant, Front Line Assembly, VNV Nation, KMFDM, Skinny Puppy, etc).

And then there's all the non-electronic stuff, but that post could go on for days.

Most of the electronically influenced stuff that is coming out these days just sucks... too much bull**** not enough talent.

Big fan of aphex, squarepusher, flying lotus type stuff.. really though its all about jim james and my morning jacket for me..not electronic but ive yet to find a live experience.that comes anywhere near the jacket.

Also, pro tip; so-called "electro-house" isn't either, it's just a garbage commercial sub-genre that blatantly robbed legit styles of their names. Those Swedish Azzclown Posse guys play horseshiat, not house. And yes, dubstep is essentially just slow, crappy drum and bass, for the most part. I think some of Bassnectar's stuff is decent. But no one with any self respect should ever admit to liking douchebags like Pauly D, Steve Aoki, David Guetta, or any of those other MTV-style losers. I won't presume to tell anyone what to like, but fer ****'s sake at least have the decency to not pretend it's good.

Todd Terje and Justin Martin are good, though.

Few deeper/tech-ier tracks, or at least snippets.

I'll check out the Interstella 555 movie. I really liked their Electroma movie, that went along with the Human After All album. If you timed it right for starting the album at the start of the movie, the two productions meshed really well together. Kind of a Pink Floyd/Wizard of Oz thing, but I'm sure they planned it that way.

Interesting stuff there, Agamemnon. It strikes my ear like a downbeat further evolution of My Dying Bride, like a deconstructed doom metal sound. Nice work. :-)

I don't listen to as much My Dying Bride or other doom stuff as I used to, but I like a lot of classic metal and I've also been getting into the Neue Deutsches Harde school of industrial/dance metal. Yah, I know that sounds crazy, but it's fun stuff.

Neurosis has some pretty good stuff. I like a lot of post-rock / metal as well. I listen to several post rock albums a day, makes the work go by a lot faster:

Mogwai
Tortoise
Godspeed! You Black Emperor
Pelican
Isis
Cult of Luna
Explosions in the Sky
Russian Circles
God Is An Astronaut

I know I'm leaving stuff out, but all those guys are pretty good -- not many have vocals. That doesn't appeal to a lot of people, but I let the instruments do the talking. Give the new Deftones album a spin a few times a week, it's fantastic. Don't really have a genre for them, but it was hilarious when they were grouped in with all the other nu-metal bands that failed. xD

Post metal definitely has some connections to doom metal though it tends to be much more musically complex. It also isn't as tied to a dark vibe inherently, though Neurosis does tend to be very dark and moody. It also isn't always down tempo. In fact it usually is more middle tempo.

Oh and Neurosis is actually a little bit older than My Dying Bride. They got their start as an underground hardcore punk band in the late 80's and then evolved into what most people consider to be the founder of post metal during the 90's.

I'm pretty big into it. Dance is a big deal in europe in general tbh, mainly house though. Having said that, i like a lot of mainstream house, it's great on a night out or even as workout music.

Other than that i like mainstream trance and classic dance. By classic dance i mean the likes of darude, dario g, zombie nation and co...that kind of 90s dance buzz cant be beat.Would link a few videos but i cant seem to embed right.

Any Pendulum or Prodigy fans here incidentally? Probably the two acts that got me into dance to be honest.

Thaks for the heads up on the artist. Really enjoy that type of music. Even though I am still young, I am an old soul.

I feel like electronic music for the most part is meh, kinds like our generation's version of cool elevator music. Crystal Method, Digweed, Tijesto, and yes even Moby are ok. Does Gorillaz count cause they are aweseome?

If I'm going with one I'm still into Jamiroquai; he's much better than standard "techno" dance garbage IMO.
