View Full Version : Who is the speedy slot WR we can pick up in the draft?

Figure we're keeping everything 'central' and the draft forum hasn't picked up yet. Whose a guy the Broncos can look to target in rounds 1-4 that could step in and be a big play slot guy for us (ala Cruz in 2011)?

If you're gonna go in with a first, why not just take Cruz from the Giants? Cost some money but at least he contributes next season.

The guy wants #1 money, at least 10 mil a year. I doubt he gets that. The Giants FO is tough but even at a lower rate we can't afford him.

Tavon Austin. He's the closest thing to Harvin since, well, Harvin if you ask me.

Tavon Austin and Stedman Bailey are 2 options.
One guy who could be interesting project would be Denard Robinson.

Is Robinson entering the draft as a WR?

Agreed. But drafting a slot guy is more difficult than it sounds and they take years sometimes.

I believe he's going to the senior bowl as one.

Mid rounds, Rashad Ross of ASU.

Can be a dual threat as a WR and Kick returner as well.

Is Robinson entering the draft as a WR?

His only chance in the NFL is to be a WR/RB, unless it turns out he can play CB which is doubtful. I think he has a decent shot at becoming a solid WR if he can catch. And by solid WR, I mean #3 WR at best who goes deep/catches screens.

Agreed. But drafting a slot guy is more difficult than it sounds and they take years sometimes.

I think it would be stupid to throw money at Cruz when we have Thomas and Decker to worry about first.

Swope from Texas A&M

Dang forgot about Swope, he'd be a good candidate too.

DeAndre Hopkins from Clemson. He can play outside or the slot. He raped LSU for 13 catches 191 yards and 2 TDs in the bowl game. It was a joke that he wasn't All-American. i don't know what he'll time in the 40, but he plays fast.

Tavon Austin. But he would have to be taken with our first. Amendola or welker in fa seem like better bets...

amendola . collie . stedman bailey tavon austin or DAndre Hopkinz.

hopkins would soften the blow if we lose decker or DT

Denard Robinson with a 4th rounder. Kid could be a dynamic play maker as a slot WR/RB hybrid.

Donnie Avery would be the best FA slot WR we could get IMO...bang for your buck. Dude is fast, 4.3 speed even though he claims he ran a 4.27 40. He had 60 catches 781 yards and 3 TDs last year. He signed a 1 year 615K contract with the Colts last year. That is more then Caldwell signed for.

robinson intrigues me as a randle el type. but I don't think he's polished enough to make a big impact in the manning offense for a couple years..

You can't go wrong with either of the West Virginia WR's but I think Austin will be gone in the 1st or early 2nd, too high for the Broncos. I like the idea of Stedman Bailey in the 3rd much better. Polished route runner, great hands, tons of speed and he's full of big plays. I'd stay away from the USC kid. He's 6-1 and 180 soaking wet. That's not compact enough for a slot guy IMO. Randy Moss could get away with being a slinky because he was an outside deep threat guy who didn't take many big shots. That slot guy is gonna get hit.

lots of options for the slot. they don't have to be just smallish guys.
Hopkins,Woods,Patterson,Hunter,Williams,Allen,Aust in are all guys you can use and a 3rd WR and slot guy who can help further elevate the passing game.

though a sleeper i like, Maquise Goodwin from Texas. cat quick little slot dot who can also return kicks and punts.

Wheaton from Oregon St is another guy who is a nice WR and could play the slot for us.

I have no interest in a skill position guy who is not ready to step in immediately.

Stedman Bailey in Round 2.

I disagree on the Tavon Austin thought. He's so much smaller than Percy Harvin or Dexter McCluster. He's DeSean Jackson size, and Jackson gets injured every year. No way Austin can play like Harvin does. Harvin barely makes it through a season. And Austin would get lawn-chaired like johnny Knox if he played the slot. Austin is an outside deep threat and return guy like DeSean. He'll get destroyed if he does anything else.

He also has no chance of going Round 1. Nobody will take someone that is 5'9, 170 lbs in Round 1. Maybe not even in Round 2.

I like the idea of Swope in round 2 or 3. Also like Hopkins, but not sure he will even make it around to us in the first. He is probably looking at being a #1 or 2 in the NFL and may be the top WR in this class.

Agreed. Austin gets lots of hype, but not a 1st or even 2nd rounder.
Amendola in FA or go after 1 of these guys in the late 2nd or 3rd round.
Markus Wheaton, WR, Oregon State
Stedman Bailey*, WR, West Virginia
Robert Woods*, WR, USC

DeAndre Hopkins will not be around past the 40th pick, so anyone who thinks DEN can get him should forget about it.

LOL Well, I'm not saying that there aren't other positions we could address there, but a WR wouldn't shock me.

I'd ask Manning or Champ or ?? to take a reconstructed salary pay cut via deferred payments before I'd let either Decker or Thomas go!!!

Goodwin brings a similar skill set as Austin, but you know at a seventh round price! We need to be focusing on value..

Another guy I really like and he will be in my next mock and I have not seen his name on here yet is Chad Bumphis.

Not a draft pick, but I wouldn't mind also signing Donnie Avery and adding him to the mix.
