View Full Version : Denver Broncos 2013 Cap Outlook -- Req Style

A thread was recently started reporting that we have $18 Million in cap space going in to next year. I used Spotrac.com (http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/denver-broncos/yearly/) to come up with the list of free agents we have this coming year, followed by their salary from 2012. I did this to illustrate how much those players cost, and to consider what players we will likely get rid of, who might need a raise, etc.

I will also factor in players who could be considered cut potential, even though their contracts extend beyond 2013. This is definitely can be up for debate, but I just wanted to make a quick little file for people to be able to use and come up with certain scenarios -- especially if they are wanting to play Armchair GM.

Apologies in advance for the numbers being off in the code (by alignment standards) -- I don't know how to fix it, but I exported it from an Excel file to here. Enjoy. . .

Denver Broncos 2013 UFA 2012 Salary

Ryan Clady 3,500,000
Tracy Porter 3,000,000
Matthew Willis 1,260,000
Kevin Vickerson 1,260,000
Justin Bannan 1,000,000
Keith Brooking 1,000,000
Brandon Stokley 1,000,000
Jim Leonhard 825,000
Dan Koppen 825,000
David Bruton 615,000
C.J. Davis 615,000

Denver Broncos 2013 RFA 2012 Salary
Tony Carter 615,000
Lance Ball 540,000
Chris Gronkowski 540,000
Britton Colquitt 540,000
Chris Clark 540,000
Mitch Unrein 415,000
Sealver Siliga 390,000

Total of Free Agent Contracts: 18,480,000

So right now it seems that all those players under contract, end up being more than the total rollover we have into the cap next year. Undoubtedly, some of those players won't be back. A guy like Clady, (if he is retained) is going to cost significantly more. We have quite a few starters and role players from this years team whose contracts are ending.

Here are some other players to consider getting rid of to cut costs:

DJ Williams -- 6 Million
Joe Mays -- 4 Million
Mike Adams -- 1.75 Million
Caleb Hanie -- 1.25 Million
Andre Caldwell -- 900,000
Manny Ramirez -- 715,000
Julius Thomas -- 555,000

That's another $15,170,000 dollars we could get rid of. . .

Really like the set up we have going into next year. Clady is the only guy who is going to command a lot of money to re-sign. Porter, Willis, Davis, Ball, Gronkowski and likely one of those UFA DT's won't even be brought back so we don't have to worry about wasted resources on those re-signs immediately. I do also think that several of the guys who are locked in longer than next year will be axed or cut as well. Think we will have a lot of flexibility. I'm diggin' it!

Since Joe was on IR, his salary wasn't on the list on Spotrac right away. That is another 4 million right there.

I agree with all you say except for DUI Williams. I say flush that turd, give Woodyard a long term deal as his replacement permanently and draft a new MLB

DJ reworked his contract prior to the end of his suspension I believe. I dont think we really know what DJ is making right now.

I will REALLY be curious to see what the market dictates for Koppen, Vickerson and Bruton. I would love to see those 3 all back at decent value, but I can see some desperate teams throwing some bad contracts their way.

Prater would be someone I'd consider redoing or cutting. Unfortunately he just signed his contract so cap hit might be larger. With Manning his importance has decreased and accuracy has been poor this yr.

If we win the big game most of these ufas will increase in value...some deservedly so. We have some real weaknesses on the oline and eventhe moreso without clady and kopen.

Our real issues are at RB and we need to keep some cap space for 2014 and 2015.

What if Manning decides to play 5 more years?

I see you put absolutely no value on kickoffs either....where Prater has been the league leader for kickers over the last two years in # and percentage.

In 2011 Prater was 19-25 (76%) on FG's. In 2012, Prater was 26 of 32 (81.3%) on FG's.

Just sayin.

Say what you want about Adams but he does not miss many tackles. That is very important. He is a little small when covering other teams TEs and he gives up some catches but after the catch Adams almost always makes the tackle.

Not only that, but it seems he has developed good chemistry with Moore as the season has progressed.

It would be great to see Quintin Carter step up next season if he is healthy, that is about the only scenario I see where Denver dosent see a decrease in production at the safety position next season. Bringing in a FA, or Rookie to replace Carter means starting from square one even in spite of a more talented replacement. A good example would be Rashad Jones taking over for Yaramiah Bell in Miami, Jones was miserable in 11, and a pro bowl snub in 12. It took a full season for Jones to reach his potential, and Denver will be competing for a championship next season, barring injury, so any setback would be costly.

This all depends on who we bring in during the offseason of course.

If we dont bring in another LBer that can start, then DJ will have to be retained, etc, etc. Same goes for guys like Willis, Bannan, Brooking, etc.
Hopefully we bring in better depth at every position, but resigning these guys will be dependent on those factors.

I wouldnt let go of Vickerson or Unrein though.

Stokely purely because he still gets it done and leadership.

Koppen as well. What a signature signing this past offseason.

Why would cutting Hanie, Ramirez and Adams be a good thing when they are currently costing us only $3.71 million? I could see them signing the 3 and let them fight it out in TC. While Hanie doesn't play, he isn't costing us much for a QB. **** it, can his ass and bring back Brandstater.
As for the others, some of them depends on who we can get to replace. Can we replace DJ Williams? Brookings might be one and done at his age. Mays and Caldwell have stayed long enough.

DUI has already been replaced. Woodyard had a great season and outperformed anything DJ has done in years. The question is do we find a replacement for Mays and Brooking.

Because next year Os won't be a rookie and Denver will only carry 2 QB's.

:Broncos:

While his overall percentage may be better a lot of it has to do with attempting less difficult FGs.

Range......2011......2012
0-19.........0-0........ 1-1
20-29.......5-6 ........7-7
30-39........8-8.......10-11
40-49........3-7........5-9
50+ ..........3-4.......3-4

He is fine from 39 and closer and not bad from 50 plus. Dont know how many of those 50 plus came from the thin air but i would suspect kickers tend to have a higher overall percentage in Denver than other stadiums.

Prater has some mental block in the 40 yrd range. That's Shaq type FT shooting.

For one of the higher paid kickers in the league that is not acceptable.

I loved how big Prater came up in the games last year, but as more and more attempts add up and we get a better statistical evaluation on Prater and he is not worth the contract.

Its not like Prater suddenly developed a block about 40-49 yd fieldgoals. The FO knew this when they offered him a contract last summer.

In 2008, he was 5-11, in 2009 8 of 10, 2010, 4 for 5, 2011 3 for 7 and 5 for 9 this past year. From 30-39 yards, he hits 90% of the time. On 50+, he hits 75% of the time. Those numbers are what justifies the contract. Then you add in what he does on kickoffs and he more than earns what Denver is paying him.

Lets add a few comparisons

Adam Vinatieri

30-39 = 82.5%
40-49 = 74%
50+ = 50%

Jason Elam

30-39 = 89.8%
40-49 = 66.1%
50+ = 60%

Does Prater need to improve his 40-49%? Of course he does. But I think its a stretch to say he does not deserve what the team decided to pay for him.

One thing we could do is guarantee Peyton more money and lower his cap number. Throwing him a hefty bonus could lower his cap number by 5-10M.

The big question Elway will be faced with is weather he wants to try and build a dynasty or go all in for a 2 year (13-14) run.

I say after we win it this year you go all in for 13 and 14.
