Former Broncos quarterback Jeff Lewis passed away on Saturday at the age of 39.

Lewis spent the 1996-98 seasons with the Broncos, earning a Super Bowl XXXII title with the team.

“We are deeply saddened by the death of former Broncos quarterback Jeff Lewis. Our most heartfelt condolences and prayers go out to Jeff’s family and friends,” the Broncos released in a statement.

In his two seasons with the club, Lewis completed 10-of-19 passes for 79 yards and ran nine times for 41 yards in five games.

He also spent time with the Carolina Panthers (1999-2001) and the New Orleans Saints (2001-02).

The Broncos selected Lewis in the fourth round (100th overall) of the 1996 NFL Draft out of Northern Arizona.

A member of the Northern Arizona University Hall of Fame, Lewis finished his career at Northern Arizona ranked second on the school's all-time lists for passing yards (9,639), touchdowns (67), completions (785) and attempts (1,315). His 59.6 pass completion percentage ranks second in Lumberjack annals. He holds the NCAA Division I-AA career record for the lowest interceptions percentage (1.82 pct.). Lewis earned third-team All-America and second-team All-Big Sky honors as a junior in 1994.

“This loss is felt throughout NAU Athletics, where Jeff’s impact as a player, a coach and an outstanding person will always be remembered,” Northern Arizona University Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics said. “We were deeply grateful for his return to the football program and wish our time together could have been longer. Our thoughts go out to his family at this difficult time.”

After his NFL playing career, Lewis served as the offensive administration assistant at the University of Louisville in 2007 and 2008 before being promoted to the school’s wide receivers coach in 2009.

In 2012, he rejoined his alma matter as its wide receivers coach.

Wow, truly sad to see him pass at such a young age. Didn't he just fall short of most consecutive completions by a QB in their first game? RIP and thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

Whoa. Crazy. I think Shanny tried to sneak him on the practice squad once and the Panthers snatched him up? Can't remember. I think he started for them a few games. RIP.

Wow, weird. Was watching SB XXXII yesterday and at the end after Mobley makes his move and the camera pans to Elway, Lewis is standing right next to him. My son asked me if that was Griese. For some reason I remember him very well because I kept thinking he would take over for Elway. How sad. So young.

Wow. That's terrible. I wonder what caused his death. 39 is way too young. It really makes me think...considering I'm 43. Just wow!

He was traded to the Panthers if I recall correctly.....

I didn't remember that, but I think he was the one that got a bad leg/knee injury and then got into Shanny's doghouse when it was revealed that he wasn't hurt in practice, but by some off the field activity.

And that is what paved the way for Bubby to be Elway's backup. I could have him mixed up with someone else, but I think it was him.

He hurt himself in off season pick-up game of hoops and lied to Shanahan about how he got injured.

So sad, RIP.
I remember hoping he'd be Elway's replacement when he retired, but that didn't work out. Did they let him go and then draft Griese after he got hurt?

It's kind of funny that me and my wife were going thru some items at our storage unit sorting thru some old stuff I've had, and she picked up this Bronco hat and asked me if she should throw it away, and I said yeah, then as she was tossing it over the crap pile we had set up, out of the corner of my eye I saw some kind of scribbles on the bill of the hat, I went over picked it up to check it out, and I laughed when I realized it was one I had it signed by Jeff Lewis in 96 at a training camp day I went to in Greeley.
I of course saved the hat and decided to keep it.
Dang, what a bummer, so young...

If they refuse to say how he died I would think it was not an accident, like car, falling off a house stuff like that. I'm thinking some kind of health problem, murder or suicide.

The fact the people around him don't seem surprised and they aren't releasing the reason makes me feel he must have had some terrible disease they knew was going to take him.

Don't remember him much but i do remember him. Or I guess like Bachuss was guessing maybe suicide. I have been pretty depressed a few times in my life and its still always hard for me to believe people would kill themselves. Must be a level I don't understand and hopefully never will.

With home field wrapped up, the 1996 Broncos played a glorified preseason game in the regular season finale at San Diego. It was an ESPN Sunday Night telecast. I purchased tickets early in the season so I sat in the rain that night disgusted that I was being treated to watching Bill Musgrave stink up the joint in the third quarter.

Musgrave eventually got destroyed on a pass rush, which brought rookie Jeff Lewis into the game. Lewis scrambled around and brought excitement into a dull game that badly needed it. He almost rallied Denver back on a fourth quarter comeback. I will remember him fondly for the joy he brought me that night.

I did a quick Google search. It seems that he might have been an assistant at NAU? It mentions that specifically, plus most of the hits come up with the school making the announcement.

I wonder if this is for the same reason NCAA univiersities won't disclose information on injuries to players? I wonder if this applies to everyone with the sports programs or if there was a concern this is the case?

Anyone remember Doug Million with the Rockies? He passed away from an asthma attack down there. Phoenix used to be a great place for people with respitory issues, but so many transplants brought non-native plants, especially olive trees, which are now banned but everywhere. The pollution doesn't help either. I don't know if Jeff had asthma, just wondering. My wife graduated with him from Horizon HS in Scottsdale.

OMG, are you dumb. RIP in the thread means Rest In Peace. He isn't taking a power nap with no one making disturbing noises. He is taking a dirt nap for eternity! If that is your meaning of "hope everything will be just fine soon" then you nailed it because not breathing anymore must have been better for him then breathing.
