Don't ever understand that. Kicking the extra point ensures that you are still on the short end of the scoreboard. I don't care what quarter, or how early in the game it is. If you are down by 2 after a touchdown, you go for 2, to try to tie up the scoreboard.

So if you miss the 2-pointer, you're down by 2. Opponent scores a TD in the 4th quarter, now you're down by 9, meaning 2 scores. Whereas you could've been down by only 8 and 1 score had you just kicked the XP earlier.

Honestly, I doubt such a study even exists. There isn't enough data due to the fact that it is so rare for a team to go for 2 before the 4th quarter (unless they're down by like 4 TD). That in itself is proof that kicking the XP is the right call.

You never know what is going to happen later in the game score-wise, whether it be FG's or TD's, and by which team. Take the guaranteed points and go for 2 only when necessary. I guess it's just coincidence that "my opinion" just happens to be shared by virtually every football coach in existence?

:oyvey:

So if you miss the 2-pointer, you're down by 2. Opponent scores a TD in the 4th quarter, now you're down by 9, meaning 2 scores. Whereas you could've been down by only 8 and 1 score had you just kicked the XP earlier.

You're wrong. Sorry.

It's not even that....Early 3rd quarter is waaaaay to early to start chasing points.

PAT = Down 14-13...Hold the oppo to a FG + score a TD = 20-17 where another oppo FG only ties.

Missed 2PC = 14-12 and then 19-17 in the above scenario where a late FG beats you.

That's Vine for you though.

I guess it's just coincidence that "my opinion" just happens to be shared by virtually every football coach in existence?

http://www.theredzone.org/Features/TwoPointConversionChart.aspx

No where on that chart does it say "wait for 4th quarter" to start following chart.

In my experiences of watching football, I would guesstimate that teams go for 2 in about 1/2 the pre-4th quarter situations as the Texans faced earlier in the game. Certainly not close to the "rare" instance, or "virtually" every coach as you claim kicks that extra point.

This is why I like having Fox as our HC, he is conservative enough that he would have punted and let his D play with a long field at their back. Now in 20 yards Colts will be in FG range.

Those of you still claiming that Houston going for 2 after an earlier touchdown being a dumb move, now, it appears that kicking the ep was the dumb move afterall. If they would have went for 2, the score would be 28-17 (if successful) or 28-16 (if unsuccessful). If Houston would have successfully converted a two point conversion earlier, they would currently be behind by a couple of scores, in which a FG could help them tie the game back up. As it stands now, Houston needs 2 scores, and both have to be touchdowns.
