View Full Version : Power Rankings

I'm just curious where people think we'll end up this week. On many, we were # 2 after the Patriots. Well, we beat the Ravens, and the Pats lost at home. But the Texans won. So.. will be 1st? 2nd after the Pats still? Or maybe the Texans?

I don't put a lot of stock in power rankings really, other than it lets me think what other people think of the Broncos. In my books, they are always # 1. :~ohyah!:

We are going to be #1 in almost every one. 9 wins in a row and we just destroyed the fourth best team in the AFC in their own crib. No one is hotter

I'd bet they put Houston on top. Power rankings are BS in my opinion. I couldn't care less about where they rank Denver.

Some will have Patriots still at top because they came back and made a game of it against 49'ers. Some will have Houston because they're 11-2 still even after getting spanked last week. Some will have us, solid road win against a playoff team and 9 straight wins. 49'ers might even get a few #1 votes. All subjective to opinions. It's fun though.

CBSSPORTS has Broncos rated #1 in AFC as of tonight.

Week 15 Judgements:

1. The Houston Texans aren't the best team in the AFC. Denver is. The Broncos are on a nine-game roll, have an underrated defense, a Super Bowl quarterback and a schedule that should make them 13-3 by season's end. Nevertheless, it's Houston that probably gains home-field advantage -- not only because it has a better record but because it holds the tiebreaker with Denver. But don't be fooled. The Texans may get the No. 1 seed, but they're no favorite to win the AFC.

2. The Texans aren't even the second-best team in the AFC; New England is, and there's a 42-14 rout of the Texans to prove it. But Denver and New England probably lock down the second and third seeds, and that's good for Houston ... because it means it only has to face one of them. The good news for Denver is that if all stays the same the next two weeks, it gains the second first-round bye and, if it plays New England, would draw the Patriots at home.

Doesn't mean anything, but the Niners or Texans at number one wouldn't surprise me.

One thing I like is with the Niners and Pats primetime games, we have been under the radar the last several games.

I think they will give the 49'ers the 1 spot since they went to NE and beat NE in December which hasn't happened in 10 years. They also did this after NE totally dismantled the supposed best team in the league.

The Falcons might also get some attention since they beat up the world champs.

If I had to guess...I think it could look like this:

1. 49'ers
2. Denver
3. Atlanta
4. NE
5. Houston

And 4/5 power rankings would still put not put that team at #1 the week after unless it was the Pats or other nfl royalty team.

Do the number 3 and 4 teams in that ranking get a birth in the "Vagisil™ Vegas Bowl"?

I look for SF to have the top spot in a lot of them Atl might be in a few others as well as Denver.

The biggest jump will be the Seahawks. They could be the best team in the NFC.

Well, they beat the Bears on the road. This argument is so stale. You can only beat teams that are on your schedule. The Seahawks have scored 50 points in the last two weeks. No teams do that no matter who you play. The Hawks and 49ers go at it next week we'll find out a lot more about them then.

Only the Texans and Falcons should be put over Denver right now and neither of them had a 9 game win streak this year. Texans D is in shambles due to injury and didn't the Pats lose to the Cards or St. Louis this year? Hard to put a 3rd seed over a 2nd seed on a 9 game win streak.

not sure if we could beat the niners or not.. their D is something special with that DL..

I put them at 1 because they are essentially a more deep Giants type team. The Giants figured out that the key to today's NFL game is having an elite pass rush. That's your only chance in a league that favors offenses and QBs like Brady, Brees, Manning and Rodgers.

So they built an elite front 7 and the question with them is can Kapernick and the offense do just enough.

Elway is also very smart, he knows what's going on. The Broncos also possess a great pass rush with Miller and Dumervill and the LBs do a solid job. I am confident in JDR getting the most out of these guys so that's why I have them at #2.

You need an elite pass rush in today's game. Also what seems to be becoming a pattern is the pistol offense. Obviously, the shanahans incorporated it first and now you have copy cats with SF and Seattle.

Right now it seems the league is all about the pass rush and teams are starting to counter it with insanely athletic, accurate QBs that freeze the defense and that can make the throws. This seems more legit than the wildcat but we will see.

Thank God Elway values defense and an elite pass rush. Flacco had no chance on Sunday.

Also from CBS:

It's time to give Broncos corner Chris Harris some Pro Bowl consideration. He has been playing at that level all season. His big pick-six against the Ravens at the end of the half was huge as Denver beat Baltimore. When Tracy Porter had his illness issues, Harris went from nickel corner to starter. And he has continued to play at a high level. Champ Bailey is the best corner on the team, but Harris has played at a level that isn't far behind. Not bad for a guy who wasn't drafted.

That's the strength of the team and why I think we have a great chance to win it all. There are better O's and better D's and better STs, but no one with elite units in all three phases other than Denver. (though perhaps our ST is not elite, it seems to be slipping lately, but still very good)

It's especially irritating this year. Yep, we lost to the pats the texans and the falcons (and were in all three games). Of course, we've _only_ lost to elite teams, unlike the pats, texans and falcons.

You know that is a very good point. We all know our schedule was front loaded and this team had not yet come together in terms of all that was new. But as you mentioned, we have only lost to the best teams in the NFL, probably the best teams in the NFL along with us and the 49'ers. YET, we are the ONLY team that has not lost a game to anybody else besides these teams in the top 5. Everybody else has lost games to scrubs or mediocre teams. At least that says to me, that this team was still coming together, even though we were in those games. It may cost us the #1 seed but it also could have forced this team to improve much faster then if we had some scrubs early. Being 2-3 and having played the elite teams showed us how fast we needed to improve, and that we did.

DENVER BRONCOS (1)

Chris Berman (ESPN, 3) - Nine straight. Were they really 2-3?

Clifton Brown (Sporting News, 4) - MVP and Lombardi Trophy are real possibilities for Peyton Manning.

Cris Collinsworth (NBC Sports, 1)

Rich Gannon (CBS Sports/SiriusXM NFL Radio, 2) - Nine straight wins behind a top 5 offense and defense, solid!

Bob Glauber (Newsday, 2) - Chris Harris with the longest interception return in Broncos history, and Peyton Manning with another solid effort as Denver makes it nine straight to get in position for a first-round bye.

Rick Gosselin (Dallas Morning News, 1) - The Broncos have a nine-game winning streak to surge to 11-3. QB Peyton Manning has had previous winning streaks of 14, 13, and 11 games in his career at Indianapolis.

Clark Judge (CBSSports.com, 1) - The Broncos haven't lost since early October and won't lose the next two weeks. They're hot, they're complete and they have Peyton. What's not to like?

Ira Kaufman (Tampa Tribune, 1) - Don't forget about a defense that has yielded the fewest points in the AFC.

Pat Kirwan (SiriusXM NFL Radio/CBSSports.com, 1) - Peyton Manning can run his no-huddle offense on the road as well as he does at home. The defensive pass rush is exceptional and Knowshon Moreno continues to impress as the running back.

John Lynch (Fox Sports, 1) - The Broncos keep rolling and as of now hold the No. 2 seed. This is a team that has the characteristics that translate into playoff success; elite QB, running game, top flight D that can stop the run and get after the passer (Von Miller) and an explosive return game thanks to the midseason pick up of Trindon Holliday.

Alex Marvez (Foxsports.com, 2) - It's hard to believe, but a team featuring Peyton Manning at quarterback is actually flying under the radar when it comes to media Super Bowl talk. That won't remain the case if Denver keeps its nine-game winning streak rolling into the postseason.

Dan Pompei (Chicago Tribune, 2) - As if they didn't have enough going for them, now Knowshon Moreno is finally showing why he was a first-round pick.

I believe the pundits are mad at Manning. Of all the sexy teams He could have signed with, he chose Denver, the Queen City of the Flyover Zone. In fact, I think they are begrudgingly ranking Denver, and talking about everybody else because they are mad. PFM did not sign with their more favored team, and HE is having a h3ll of a year.......

I also believe that the Bronco fans are still in shock that PFM came to Denver, the Queen City of the Flyover Zone. It's a good town, fills the stadium, but is not sexy like San Francisco. Or even Tennesee where He went to College. But Denver, the Queen City of the Flyover Zone? So, yeah, Denver, the Queens City of the Flyover Zone has a good team, but PFM cannot be all the stories, now can he?

The Queen City of the Flyover Zone? Imagine that.....

I think it should be Denver #1, Seattle #2.

Seattle has beaten GB, NE, and SF and the last 3 games they are averaging close to 50 points, while surrendering less than 7 points per game. Enough said.

This is the first time in many years that I haven't checked the power rankings on a weekly basis. These Broncos are so good that it really doesn't matter to me what some Poindexter behind a laptop has to say about them. The playoffs will determine who is number 1 or 2, etc.

That all being said, the Broncos & Pats are the two best teams in the AFC, and the NFC has 4 legitimate teams that can make it to the Bowl, IMO (GB, SF, Seattle, & Atlanta). There will be no 9-7 team that makes it this year; again, IMO.

This team is a legitimate SB contender, and in the coming month, we will find out just how legitimate they are.

If you are going to call something dumb you should at least try and spell the word right. Otherwise it makes you look 'dum'.

How can Seattle not be #2?

Because they are a one trick pony....Any fool with internet access could see that the would boat race SF last night....They are one and done in the playoffs though.

Seattle is 7-0 at home. They are 3-5 on the road. As a wildcard team, they will be out of the playoffs after the first round. That team cannot win on the road.

Their 3 road victories: Buffalo, Chicago, Carolina.

5 Road losses: Arizona, St. Louis, San Francisco, Detroit, Miami

Not exactly a murderer's row of road games.

I can see that, the last month they have been playing very good football. I guess we'll see how far they have come the first week of the playoffs.

If Richard Sherman is suspended, I agree, if not, then watch out.
