Obama isn’t just running for office. He’s in office. He has to make decisions, not just promises. He has a record. Whatever problems the country has—whether he caused them or not—they officially belong to him. It doesn’t matter that he took over an economy in free fall, or that Republicans have obstructed him at every turn. To the voters just tuning in, Romney only has to make the case that America is still sick, and that he has the right medicine.

So how’s that for irony? Mitt Romney: the hope and change candidate.

------------------------------

To come off as moderate, Romney had to lie. He had to say that his tax plan doesn’t cut taxes for rich guys and doesn’t cost five-trillion dollars. He had to promise that he’ll keep the Affordable Care Act’s most popular provisions, and that he’ll eliminate only the bad regulations on Wall Street. These claims are demonstrably false.

But because there is no mechanism in place to punish candidates for lying—a moderator empowered to correct them, say, or a Fourth Estate willing to treat veracity the central measure of an argument’s merit—he got away with it.

Thurston knows he can lie through his teeth, change positions on an hourly basis and Rush's minions will still vote for him - simply because he's a rich white guy.

He also hopes to catch undecideds who don't have time to follow politics or to fact check his claims in his net of lies and BS.

I overheard a deluded little man today tell his associates that Obama's tanking last night was merely a "strategy" to draw out Romney for the kill, noting that the same crappy first debate performance happened last time against McCain. Obama isn't dumb, after all.

So apparently someone who isn't stupid is going to act stupid as a ruse and make himself look like **** on national television as some genius ruse to overcome someone we are all told is an intellectual peon in comparison to himself. Genius!

Or maybe it's more simple - Obama really is this ****ed up without his teleprompters and coaches.

McCain overall won the debates in 2008 and before that Alan Keyes wiped the floor with him, so...

Perhaps it's just difficult seeing the real man when you've so long been trained to look at the glossy image and think it was the real man?

At the end of the day, he's still the incompetent, unqualified Red Diaper Baby he ever was.

Obama can be glad Romney is nowhere near the debater that Keyes is.

Debates are worthless. The "winner" of the debate is not the person with the superior position, the winner is the person with the superior debating skills. High on the list of important debating skills are charisma, deception and indirection. Good (as in correct) arguments don't even appear on the list.

It's why, for example, creationists frequently "win" debates defending a completely insane position (a 6000yo earth, dinosaurs and humans co-existing, Noah's Flood/Ark, etc.).
