For anyone who listens to right-wing media, the 47% stat is being bellowed non-stop. The assumption among those radio hosts is that most of those 47% are villains out of a Rand novel, living the high-life on welfare, driving cadillacs, eating at fine restaurants with their EBT cards.

However, the actual number is just 6.9% when you don't count the elderly.

Here's how it breaks down:

46.4% of Households Paid No Federal Income Tax for 2011

http://www.taxpolicycenter.org/taxtopics/images/Breakdown1-06-17-11_1.gif

But Nearly Two-Thirds of Households
That Paid No Income Tax Paid Payroll Taxes

http://www.taxpolicycenter.org/taxtopics/images/Breakdown2-06-17-11.gif

Who Paid Neither Income Nor Payroll Taxes?

Now when you hear the right-wing talk about non-taxpayers, please mentally alter their "47%" stat to 6.9%.

Unless they're trying to run a "Put the geriatric & disabled back to work!" campaign, then it's 18.1%.

The wingnuts will never get it rhough their heads that income tax is only part of federal taxes.

Those that do are too dishonest to acknowledge it.

It's become impossible to tell the dishonest and the ignorant apart.

I don't believe that for a second. If you take just take the millions upon millions of illegals you got your 6.9 % right there. If the right claims 47% the left 6.9% I would bet the real number is somewhere smack dab in the middle around 20%. We're talking trillion so dollars right there.

What do we call those millionaires and billionaires who do not pay Federal Income Taxes?

While I appreciate the independent research you did in your head right there, tax data isn't secret information held by the left or the right, it's freely available.

You are welcome to look at the raw data yourself.

If you find an error in Tax Policy Center's data, I'm sure they'd be happy to correct it.

"In 2002, tax experts who had served in the Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, and Bill Clinton administrations established the Tax Policy Center to provide unbiased analysis of tax issues."

Also, your claim that illegal immigrants don't pay taxes is false. That is one of the benefits of undocumented workers - they pay in to social security without getting anything in return.

Lords of the write-off.

EDIT: Wow, you weren't kidding.

4,000 Millionaires pay zilch in federal taxes (http://money.cnn.com/2012/09/18/pf/taxes/romney-income-taxes-millionaires/)

Repeat after me Meck77: income tax is not the same thing as total federal tax.

Until you get that through your thick skull there's no point in continuing in this conversation.

Ha! That's right-wingers for ya. If the facts don't support what they believe, then the problem must be with the facts.

You'd think a guy like Meck77 who has such a high opinion of himself when it comes to his alleged inside track on economic and business issues would understand such fundamentals, huh?

I think people are avoiding this thread because it had facts, every person on this board constantly clamoring that the left doesn't provide facts, please explain this issue.

So now we can just dismiss the facts by saying "I don't believe that for a second." If you had believed it for a minute would you feel at all inclined to present some contrary actual facts, or do you feel that your subjective state of belief in any temporal dimension suffices?

Clearly the latter.

That's just how high his opinion of himself is.

Well, all I know is I'm glad the Feds are going after the offshore accounts. The super rich have been avoiding taxes that way for far too long, and at the same time having reduced Fed tax rates.

The fact that this hack keeps getting re-elected is mind boggling. And though this article is right for calling it "pot meet kettle," it doesn't change the fact that his points (which primarily are not in the article) about all the taxes paid by middle and lower income Americans are often a higher percentage than that of the wealthier Americans.

It's odd to me that many taken off the tax books was done by the Bush II tax cuts, but now Republicans are complaining about that? Yeesh.

So the New Republicans want to keep their own tax cuts, but go ahead and put the poor back on the books. I'm fine with everybody contributing, hell I was slinging newspapers on doorsteps when I was 12 years old, filed tax returns and paid taxes so I figure $100 from everyone is fair. But the rich can't go walking away without taking a hit themselves.

One of the Koch brothers decided to build himself a town in Colorado with his riches just recently. That's creating jobs? Please. Dude has spent a fortune buying up Western memorabilia to create this authentic Western town, not creating jobs.

And it was stated in a Posst article that he had no intention of letting the public (For definition, see "Unwashed", "poor", or "freeloaders".) see it.
