This is where it gets touchy but the argument has some merit. IF he were just gay, anyone making fun of him would be bullying or prejudiced and reprimanded. What, though, when it was revealed to his teammates that his boyfriend is a 65 year old man? They're gonna make fun of him non-stop. At that point, it sincerely could be a distraction. Is it fair to the kid? Probably not. Would it be a distraction to keep him around at this point? Possibly.

The coach has to act in the best interests of the team. If it's because the player is distracting through getting in trouble, having a 65 year old boyfriend, or wearing a duck costume to practice... the premise still stands. It's touchy but a muddy subject just the same.
