View Full Version : Pet Peeve - Lining Up Offsides

One thing that bugs me probably more than it should is this:

First play following a touchback. Ball is placed at the 20 yard line. Either the entire hand or the entire foot of a defensive player (depending on their stance) is placed completely over the 20 yard line. It should be an obvious call for lining up in the neutral zone, but it never gets called. It's one thing if it happens in the middle of a drive and the LOS is in an odd place between yardage markers. But when it's very clearly the 20 yard line and there's no gray area, it should be easy to spot and call, even for a replacement ref.

It's just one of those things that really bugs me, probably because it happens so much in Denver with all the extra touchbacks and drives starting at the 20. It was especially glaring on the very first play from scrimmage last night. The Steelers outside linebacker at the bottom of the screen had his entire foot over the 20.

Elvis looked like he was lining up offsides at least three times last night.

Maybe that was part of the reason he really had loads of sacks..

NOT..

Oh wait that should have given him the edge..

My pet peeve was the Steelers OTs lining up 3 yards off the LOS on every play. It was absurd.

They called it once, but sometimes teams figure lets do it a lot, if they only call it once or twice its worth it.

The replacement officials are over matched. Its ridiculous the league is this cheap.

Yeah, there was a lot of lining up in the neutral zone.

I was surprised it wasn't called more often.
