GOP brand suffers heading into election season

There are worrying signs about the Republican brand nationally, just five days before the party gathers for its convention and 76 days before Election Day.

A majority of voters in the new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll called presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney and GOP candidates for Congress "out of step" with most Americans' thinking compared to President Barack Obama and Democratic candidates.

And 29 percent of registered voters said they had "very negative" impressions of the Republican Party – the second-highest number of voters to give the most intensely negative assessment of the GOP in the history of the NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll, dating back to 1990.

The only other instance in which the “very negative” rating for the GOP surpassed that was in 2006, before Republicans received a drubbing at the polls.

The numbers underscore the headwinds facing Republicans heading into an election they're eager to win, and illustrate the stakes for the GOP next week in Tampa, where they'll have an opportunity to soften impressions of the party.

But the souring GOP brand likely has a longer tail than the last few weeks. A bloody presidential primary and congressional gridlock have contributed to a sense that Republicans don’t represent the mainstream.

Fifty-four percent of voters said that Republican candidates for Congress were out of step with the public, versus 38 percent who called them mainstream. By contrast, voters view Democratic candidates more evenly: 45 percent said Democratic congressional candidates were mainstream, and 48 percent called them out of step.

Which party does the middle class favor?

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- President Obama and Mitt Romney both say they are focused on improving the lives of middle-class Americans, but a new poll suggests that the president has a slight edge over his challenger with the key demographic group.

Just more than half -- 52% -- of middle-class adults said the president's policies would benefit them should he win a second term. A lower number -- 42% -- of respondents said that Romney's policies would help the middle class.

The new findings were published Wednesday by the Pew Research Center. The poll was conducted before Rep. Paul Ryan was added to the Republican ticket.

Part of a larger report on the middle class, the survey also indicates that Americans have some strong opinions about which groups would benefit from the candidates' proposed policies.

A full 71% of respondents said that Romney's policies would benefit the rich, while only 38% said the same of Obama's plans. The numbers flip when middle-class adults were asked about the poor. More than three-in-five -- or 62% -- said Obama's policies would help the poor, while only one-in-three said Romney's plans would help the group.

When asked to rate the parties rather than the candidates, respondents were even less likely to say politicians were looking out for their interests. Just 26% said that Republicans favor middle-class interests over those of the rich and poor. Only slightly more -- 37% -- said the same of Democrats

A majority of respondents said that the Republican Party favors the rich -- a theme that has become a mantra for Democrats and the Obama campaign. Fully 62% of the middle class said the GOP favors the rich, while only 16% said the same of Democrats. Meanwhile, 34% said Democrats favor the poor.

Good stuff...............

NBC polls.....shows African americans 94% Obama 0% Romney
Women Obama by 15-20%
Latinos take Obama by a 2 to 1 margin
35 under white males Obama has a slight lead

Its seems to be over 35 over white males where Romney is winning.......could be money issue as obviously Romney favors the rich.....he ****s everybody else but he does favor the rich but as I have said many times there are not enough of them to win the election for Romney.

I think America needs another 4-8 years of the Bush Administration (i.e. Romney) to realize we've been heading in the wrong direction. Most Americans are still very anti-government.

Yep we cling to our guns and religion.

That and you dopes believe stuff like this:

"[President Obama is] going to try to hand over the sovereignty of the United States to the (United Nations), and what is going to happen when that happens? I'm thinking the worst. Civil unrest, civil disobedience, civil war maybe. And we're not just talking a few riots here and demonstrations, we're talking Lexington, Concord, take up arms and get rid of the guy. Now what's going to happen if we do that, if the public decides to do that? He's going to send in U.N. troops. I don't want 'em in Lubbock County. OK. So I'm going to stand in front of their armored personnel carrier and say 'you're not coming in here'," - Judge Tom Head of Lubbock County, Texas.

Ha! Sounds like "frontier gibberish" to me.

That's because government is wasteful and Wall Street has too much access to it. But I agree with you that Romney would take us further in the wrong direction.
