View Full Version : Pats Sign Demps

It's always the Pats. :oyvey:

Demps earned an Olympic silver medal in London as part of USA's 4x100 relay team. Before that, he was an electric return man and hybrid player for the University of Florida, piling up 2,470 rushing yards and 23 touchdowns during his four-year career. But at 5'7/190, his role with the Patriots is expected to be limited to special teams. Demps averaged 28.8 yards per kickoff return as a Gator. The Bucs and Jets were also interested.

This random newspaper says the agent denies it:

http://www.courant.com/sports/football/patriots/hc-patriots-demps-20120817,0,7979492.story

But I've never really heard of the "Sports Exchange" so who knows.

"Former Florida running back Jeff Demps could be close to signing with the New England Patriots, but his agent has denied a decision was made early Friday."

Edit: Just kidding, the article now says he signed.

I think this means that Edelman's gone. It also means that the Patriots will be keeping 5 RB's (Ridley, Vereen, Woodhead, Kettani, and Demps)...and possibly cutting Spencer Larsen.

Larsen was stupid to sign a contract with the Patriots. We could always sign him back again for half price.

I think he had enough production at a high collegiate level to be an effective PR/KR and gadget player in the NFL. It seems like the speed burner players always have problems with nagging injuries (turf-toe, hammies etc.) A lot of times the track guys production goes to **** when they get dinged up.

He wasn't exempt because of the Olympics. He chose not to declare for it because of the Olympics. There's a distinction there.

There's nothing in the current CBA that requires anyone to declare for the draft prior to being eligible to play in the NFL.

I am throwing up in my mouth as I type this but I would much prefer to have KM over Woodhead, if only for KM's potential that he could be productive in our new system over the fact that he spends more time on ExcerCycles than in the game.

There was a lot of guffawing when someone drafted him in the OMane fantasy draft, but I think most of it was because he wasn't or shouldn't have been draftable, if I recall.

Sorry but I'm pretty sure that if you want to play in the NFL you either have to sit out a period of time or go into draft. I can't prove it but it wouldn't make sense. Otherwise a player who is best in the country could say I don't want to play for the Raiders who have the first pick in the draft. I will just not enter draft and hit FA market lol. No way. They at least have to wait some amount of time. Probably because its been a few yrs sense Demps was out of college he doesn't have to. But no way is it a player can just say I don't like the draft, not entering. Just going to skip it and go straight to FA.

fair enough, but perhaps the fact that he went to the olympics will help him get around any possible technical issues that CTD is talking about, that is, he has to sit out a year. I'm not saying CTD is right because I don't know one way or the other, but for argument's sake lets pretend CTD is right but as we all are witnessing, Demps is NOT sitting out a year. Why? Perhaps because the NFL recognizes the rare occassion to participate in the olympics?

Anyhow, obviously Demps has got an agent and is shopping himself around. Until Goodell or someone from the NFL says "you can't do this because...." none of it matters. I just hope he ends up a Bronco.

Michael Carter played NT for 49ers, and is only athlete to win Gold in olympics and SB ring in same year...played 9 seasons made 3 pro bowls and won 3 SB's, and while there have been some very fast guys to play in the NFL, I'm having a hard time trying to come up with a track guy first and foremost (Olympians) other than Bob Hayes to actually do much of anything in the NFL...

Willie Gault made the '80 team but the US boycotted the Olympics...he played 11 seasons as a KR/WR catching 333 passes for 6635 yards (19.9 avg) and 44 TD's

Ron Brown ('84) led the NFL in KR TD's in '85 ended up with 98 receptions and 13 TD's over 7 seasons

James Jett scored 30 TD's over his ten year career...

Not surprisingly, all three of these guys played for the Raiders

We know the feeling....in the 23 years 1977 thru 1998 the Broncos had only endured 3 losing seasons, winning the AFCW 10 times...making the playoffs 13 times...playing for the AFC title 7 times, and played in 6 SB's winning two of them....oh, and one last thing. during that period the Broncos went 12-2 vs. the Patriots with Elway finishing undefeated vs them at 11-0...just saying

Did you miss all my posts and links about this in this and the other thread? There's a reason why all the best players don't do this. Money.

THE CAP FOR ALL UNDRAFTED FA BONUSES IS APPROXIMATELY $75,000. Teams can't sign these guys to "normal" FA contracts. Who is going to sacrifice millions in bonuses and the guaranty to be on the team for years regardless of injuries or nonperformance (because the team is committed to them) just so they can choose their own team for their rookie year.
