View Full Version : Manning Has Trouble Throwing To His Right? (M)

Anyone who has been to camp noticed this? Or is this just Clayton BS?

"1. Manning looks good enough: Even if the Broncos signed Manning at 85 percent of his skill set, it was a remarkable acquisition. Tebowmania was fun, but it was shallow. Though he would never say it publicly, Elway knew Tim Tebow couldn't sustain success as a quarterback. Tebow wasn't an accurate thrower, and eventually defensive coordinators would have found ways to stop his style of option football. Manning's knowledge and experience trump Tebow's legs and competitiveness. Coming off four neck operations, Manning knows he's not 100 percent as a thrower, but he's good enough to compensate. Because he had a neck fusion procedure, his most inconsistent throws might be to his right, where he has to plant his right foot, extend his arm and fire. He'll get better as the damaged nerve in his neck regenerates and full arm strength returns. Throwing to his left appears to be no problem. Throwing accurate, short passes in the middle of the field isn't an issue. He shows flashes of being able to throw the deep ball, something that was inconsistent in his final season on the field in Indianapolis, in 2010. More than anything else, Manning provides credibility for the Broncos. His presence alone makes them a contender for the AFC West title."

Didn't see any problem during the scrimmage. Manning fired a 40-yard bomb down the right sideline to Caldwell.

Decker has been primarily working on the right side against Champ, and has been having pretty consistent success lately, now that Manning and Decker have the timing down.

Manning has been very successful with the "Levels" play on the left side with Reggie Wayne and Dallas Clark, since Marvin Harrison retired. It's obviously easier to exploit the weakside of the Defense. Not to say Garcon didn't get his catches (because he did), but he just wasn't open as much as the other guys. I imagine it will be the same way with Decker. I expect DT and Tamme to lead in catches (with Decker not far behind), but not as an indictment on Manning's arm strength.

Solid analysis... good thing he doesn't have to plant on his right foot and extend his arm when he's throwing to the left side and down the middle or else we might be in trouble. :oyvey:

Clayton is a ruhtard. I've got questions about what level Manning will be able to return to, but this "he may not be able to throw to his right because of his neck" crap is beyond idiotic. Does Clayton even know how to throw a football?

-<-insert witty quip here.->-

-<-insert insult against crypt keeper here.->-

With that being said. On the one day of camp I went to, he had more completions on the right than to the left, but was solid everywhere. He had to have Brock tie his shoes though. It looked like if he bent his head all the way towards the earth his neck would snap off if he tried to raise it back up.

LRtagger
08-08-2012, 10:34 AM
Solid analysis. He should start short arming throws off his back foot to the right now just like he does on the throws to the left and middle. That should help with his consistency to the right.

Cheese and rice!!! I just read that whole article and think I've lost more brain cells than an all night whiskey pounding session. Did Clayton even attend camp? He had some nice observations on D. Thomas, but this is all he said about Decker:

Eric Decker is also a good slot receiver.

He then goes on to profuse that Manning is eventually going to need more outside help. I would like to meet this man, shake his hand, pity his mental deficiencies, then introduce him to KCStud. I think they'd be best friends.

Peyton Manning's handiwork through two preseason games has given us hints of the past, present and future.

The Denver Broncos quarterback has shown himself to be the same cerebral, intense player of yesteryear, but signs of rust remain.

Saturday's loss to the Seattle Seahawks, Manning's passes wobbled at times, and there's lingering concern about his ability to throw the ball to his right.

ESPN's John Clayton tracked Manning's progress through the summer and saw the quarterback struggle with passes to his right beyond 10 yards. This was evident in offseason practices, according to Clayton, who has seen improvement, but not perfection, through two preseason games.

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/9mxK8jxlKt0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Manning looks comfortable throwing to his left, but Matt Williamson of Scouts Inc. told ESPN.com that defenses might scheme to seal up that side of the field, forcing Peyton into uncomfortable situations. Nobody's sounding the alarm just yet: "If anyone can do what is needed to get away with throwing with field limitations, it is No. 18," Williamson said.

Manning's second interception against the Seahawks came on a medium-range pass to the right side of the field. It was not a good throw by Manning. He overthrew his target, sailing the ball into traffic.

Manning has struggled at times pushing the ball downfield. We've seen the old Manning on short, crisp routes, but he's not in midseason form on deeper fare. Some of this is physical -- getting back into form -- but part of the issue has to do with his new surroundings, new receivers -- new everything -- after many comfortable years with the Indianapolis Colts.

It's all part of a challenging, but also promising, comeback attempt for Peyton Manning (which we will not cease to analyze -- trust us).

Clayton's analysis is way off:

Peyton went 16/23 in the game (69.5%) with 3 drops:
1st incomplete pass: Deflection at the line by Red Bryant, Manning telegraphed it...rare play.
2nd incomplete pass: A bit low and hot to Tamme on a short 5-yard cross. Hit Tamme in the hands, drop.
3rd incomplete pass: 50-yard bomb to DT in double coverage. Manning put it where only DT could get it...but DT gave up on the play (later chewed out).
4th incomplete pass: Tossed a 35-yarder over the middle with Dreessen running straight up the field (4 men in coverage). Probably a bad decision to throw it, but it was only a yard high. Dreessen probably would have gotten hurt if he stretched out for it.
5th incomplete pass: Tossed it out of bounds to the right with pressure in his face. First hit of the season.
6th incomplete pass: Decker drops an easy ball right on the money, slant pattern.
7th incomplete pass: Dreessen lets the ball hit his hip in the endzone, drop.

So, out of 23 passes (many of them completed to the right side), we have 1 slight overthrow (int.), 1 batted ball (int.), 1 throwaway, 1 long bomb, and 3 blatant drops. Not bad.

Two days later, at practice, Manning went 13 for 15.

As a matter of fact, I highly doubt there has been a single NFL Quarterback as accurate as Manning during the preseason. Gollum is obviously smoking rocks.

If you go back and watch the preseason, Manning didn't even attempt a pass to his right. It was just circumstantial. The only one he did was that pass where DT didn't run straight to the pylon.
