McCain refutes accusations by fellow Republicans about Hillary Clinton aide
Republican Senator John McCain (AZ) took to the Senate floor Wednesday to criticize fellow Republican Rep. Michele Bachmann (MN) and four other Republican members of Congress about their request that various agencies investigate whether the government has been infiltrated by Muslim extremists.
Bachmann is joined in her request by Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX), Trent Franks (R-AZ), Rep. Thomas Rooney (R-FL) and Rep. Lynn Westmoreland (R-GA).
Among the issues they raise is a claim that long-time aide to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Huma Abedin, has three family members connected to the Muslim Brotherhood, and is at risk of being influenced by her family members. The members of Congress want to know how she holds a high level security clearance.
"The concerns about the foreign influence of immediate family members is such a concern to the U.S. Government that it includes these factors as potentially disqualifying conditions for obtaining a security clearance, which undoubtedly Ms. Abedin has had to obtain to function in her position," Bachmann wrote in a letter defending the request. "For us to raise issues about a highly-based U.S. Government official with known immediate family connections to foreign extremist organizations is not a question of singling out Ms. Abedin. In fact, these questions are raised by the U.S. Government of anyone seeking a security clearance."
State Department spokesman Phillipe Reines called the accusations "nothing but vicious and disgusting lies," in a statement to CNN.
McCain gave a full-throated endorsement of Abedin on Wednesday:
“To say that the accusations made...are not substantiated by the evidence they offer is to be overly polite and diplomatic about it. It is far better, and more accurate, to talk straight: These allegations about Huma, and the report from which they are drawn, are nothing less than an unwarranted and unfounded attack on an honorable woman, a dedicated American, and a loyal public servant.
“The letter alleges that three members of Huma’s family are ‘connected to Muslim Brotherhood operatives and/or organizations.’ Never mind that one of those individuals, Huma’s father, passed away two decades ago. The letter and the report offer not one instance of an action, a decision, or a public position that Huma has taken while at the State Department that would lend credence to the charge that she is promoting anti-American activities within our government. Nor does either document offer any evidence of a direct impact that Huma may have had on one of the U.S. policies with which the authors of the letter and the producers of the report find fault. These sinister accusations rest solely on a few unspecified and unsubstantiated associations of members of Huma’s family, none of which have been shown to harm or threaten the United States in any way. These attacks on Huma have no logic, no basis, and no merit. And they need to stop now.
On Tuesday night, Democratic Congressman Keith Ellison, the first Muslim elected to Congress. also criticized the claims made by Bachmann in an interview with Anderson Cooper on Anderson Cooper 360. Bachmann's claims of 'deep penetration' of Muslim extremist infiltration into the highest levels of the U.S. government are "not true, it doesn't exist, its a phantom" and that "it just is the worst of guilt by association, it is a stark front to American values" and "we've got to stand up for this idea that we all count in this America."

Rush Limbaugh: 'Dark Knight Rises' villain Bane is a dig at Mitt Romney
Rush Limbaugh has come under the impression that the villainous Bane, played by Tom Hardy in “The Dark Knight Rises” and Batman's most destructive nemesis yet, is a dig at Bain Capital, the financial services company once headed by Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney that's featuring prominently in President Barack Obama's campaign ads.
Hmm, this might be more of a headscratcher than “Inception.”
Do you think it is accidental that the name of the really vicious fire-breathing, four-eyed whatever-it-is villain in this movie is named Bane?" Limbaugh lamented on his syndicated radio show today.
Well, considering DC Comics' “Batman: Vengeance of Bane No. 1,” featuring the villain's first appearance, was published in 1993, you can certainly call it a coincidence (if you have to call it something, that is).
Or you could call it something else. Like...
"Ridiculous," comic book writer and Bane co-creator Chuck Dixon wrote on a Dixonverse.net message board in response to Limbaugh's comments.

Murrow said of McCarthy:
His primary achievement has been in confusing the public mind, as between the internal and the external threats of Communism. We must not confuse dissent with disloyalty. We must remember always that accusation is not proof and that conviction depends upon evidence and due process of law. We will not walk in fear, one of another. We will not be driven by fear into an age of unreason, if we dig deep in our history and our doctrine, and remember that we are not descended from fearful men ... We proclaim ourselves, as indeed we are, the defenders of freedom, wherever it continues to exist in the world, but we cannot defend freedom abroad by deserting it at home. The actions of the junior Senator from Wisconsin have caused alarm and dismay amongst our allies abroad, and given considerable comfort to our enemies. And whose fault is that? Not really his. He didn't create this situation of fear; he merely exploited it—and rather successfully.

I have heard it applied to farmers, shopkeepers, Social Credit, corporal punishment, fox-hunting, bull-fighting, the 1922 Committee, the 1941 Committee, Kipling, Gandhi, Chiang Kai-Shek, homosexuality, Priestley's broadcasts, youth hostels, astrology, women, dogs and I don't know what else."

George Orwell (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orwellian#Political_language)
The word fascist is sometimes used to denigrate people, institutions, or groups that would not describe themselves as ideologically fascist, and that may not fall within the formal definition of the word. The Fascist party that developed in Italy in the 1920s rigidly enforced conservative values and behavior norms during the Mussolini regime. As a political epithet, fascist was subsequently used in an anti-authoritarian sense to emphasize the common ideology of governmental suppression of individual freedom. It has also been applied to a broad range of people and groups, including people of many religious faiths, particularly fundamentalist groups. The individual, institution, or group(s) called fascist often find the use of the term in this way to be highly offensive and inappropriate.
In this sense, the word fascist is intended to mean "oppressive", "intolerant", "chauvinist", "genocidal", "dictatorial", "racist", or "aggressive" – all concepts that are allegedly inspired by the ideology of actual fascism, and pervasive through fascist states. One might accuse an inconveniently placed police roadblock as being a "fascist tactic" for its perceived oppression or interloping, or an overly authoritarian teacher as being "a total fascist". Terms like Nazi and Hitlerite, are often used in similar contexts.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fascist_(epithet)

Well, that was one of Orwell's issues with language in general, and the English language in general. It arbitrarily invents new words and alters old ones to fit whatever definition the people wish to ascribe it. That is also why government control over the language is a bad thing, and why it's wonderful that there is no "national language" of the united states. The moment you infuse government influence into language as policy, you open the potential for abuse of that control.

Yes, which means the term, interchangeable with other terms, basically means anyone the person speaking doesn't like. I've never seen the term used in any way but the serious and literally-meaning way, as in yeah, that guy/gal really IS a fascist.
Words in that list are the interchangeable terms I find to be politically-defined and thus of little to no real meaning, especially when if you look at the definition of the word, you often find that the person using it is frequently engaging in what he is accusing the other person of being.
For example, the word 'bigot.' Its meaning is about as vague and useless as it gets:
big·ot (bgt)
n.
One who is strongly partial to one's own group, religion, race, or politics and is intolerant of those who differ.
Ideological - if not ethnic and religious - partisans who prefer their own group are the ones who always use the word, so... ?

I agree, though at least in modern times, I am seeing more language manipulation from activists than anything, as a means of framing and defining arguments and people. This is the kind of thing I am referring to here. When your political positions are reduced to repeating one-word or one-liners from this or that ideological sector, you've pretty much outed yourself as an idiot in my eyes.

Uh, no? There are plenty of us who rightly call others bigots who don't prefer their "own group", but rather an equal representation for all groups. Unless you're referring to "group" as "number of people who share like views", in which case this is a pointless pseudo-intellectual exercise because it can be applied to any disagreement in the history of time, ever.

What is an equal representation of groups? If there is no such thing in terms of percentage of the population, that means that some groups are getting more representation than their numbers call for, and likewise, then other groups are getting less, which could be considered disenfranchisement.
I think the definition of the word bigot itself gives illustration to the uselessness of the word in rational use, and thus is left as a selective political weapon, which is what indeed it is used for.

Except that these concepts are not exclusive to fascism, and happen to also heavily apply to left-oriented governments often considered "progressive," not counting religious governments.
I'd love to know where you get the idea that if Bachmann got power, she'd create a genocidal dictatorship. I also find it amusing that the only genocidal dictators people can seem to find to apply the label to are right-of-center.
Your admitted varied usage of the term fascist (and even your own usage of it) again points to the uselessness of the word as I had mentioned. Unless someone or something isn't honestly and literally fascistic, then to the listener, you may as well just call them an idiot or a turd, because that's about all the word is worth at that point. If no valid reason is given to the application of such a loaded label, then it becomes a useless weapon that people throw around with any real meaning attached to it.
Do you literally mean that Bachmann is a fascist in the real sense of the word, or do you mean that she's just a crap head?

The GOP has become so rabid extremist Right. I'm not sure how it happened, but it happened. Like the article says, compromise has become unacceptable for a good portion of the GOP, and that just isn't a good attitude.
When you have a nutcase like Limbaugh guiding attitudes, that's not a good thing. Limbaugh has been a drug addict and probably still is.
He's been married four times, hasn't fathered a child. Dude is weird, very weird, probably can't even get a hardon for a woman. But some people love his rubbish, and that tells one right there how weird the GOP has become as a whole.
Good lord, GOP people were loving up Sarah Palin, Michelle Bachman, Newt Gingrich, and Fred Thompson and those were some of the most ignorant fools you'll ever see trying to be statesmen. And GWB, nobody from the GOP even wants him speaking in support he was such a failure as President.

The net effect of the voter ID proposal the repigs are pushing is one that disenfranchises African Americans (a GOP specialty) whether you believe it's intentional or not.

Is that why you're ashamed to provide a link?
Ha!
Nice BS, but that is all you have. The racists are people like you who believe minorities are not smart enough, so they need to have even the smallest things done or them, such as simple ID cards. The democrats were the ones against the 1964 Civil Rights Act and carried a guy like Robert Byrd in your party for decades, who not only voted against that bill, but was a KKK member, but you guys had no problem with him. So don't bother me with your pretend democrats aren't racists crap since the proof is in the pudding. Heck, your own party controls the WH yet there are more blacks out of work today than has been in decades. Yeah, your party has done so much for minorities. Idiot! Now go post more about the Broncos, la BRONCO fan. Oh that's right, you never have in 50,000 posts. You are also showing why liberals have mental issues though, a big Bronco fan who never posts a ting about the Broncos. Really sane there.

As usual, you have everything bass-ackwards.
It's repukes like you who imply that African Americans are too stupid to know how to vote every time you run your traps about the Democratic Party lulling people into "dependence on handouts" and all that other made-up bullsh*t.
As for Byrd, at least he admitted he was wrong and renounced his racist views - unlike Thurmond and Lott and so many other GOP jackals.
I always have to laugh at the way right-wing pinheads like you need to go back to the days before the Civil Rights Act in order to find a time when your party wasn't on the wrong side of civil rights issues. What have you done since 1964? Answer: You have used racism to your party's electoral advantage via the "southern strategy."
And your take on unemployment and its causes is just laughable when you consider how many jobs were lost under your hero the court-appointed pinhead and the fact that those jobs are never coming back.

How can you tell when a right-wing pinhead is out of ammo?
When he starts attacking your Broncos "fanhood" on a WRP forum.

One of them depicts Obama made up to look like a minstrel.
Another uses "bro" in a way that's familiar to anyone who's observed the way racists make fun of speech used by black people.
Looks like a clown to me. Perhaps you're just a tad oversensitive?
As usual, this boils more down to perception of the viewer than the intent of the artist.
Bro is common slang nowdays, if you haven't noticed.

The GOP has become so rabid extremist Right. I'm not sure how it happened, but it happened. Like the article says, compromise has become unacceptable for a good portion of the GOP, and that just isn't a good attitude.
Reuters is liberal garbage. Secondly, the GOP mainline isn't that far right. If you think they are, then you're probably just that far left.

Well, the GOP is trying to get centered judging by favoring Romney as the candidate. He's the most centered of the bunch.

Well, how about this: Any person who supports measures at the ballot (purging voter lists, voter ID laws, flyers on windows saying police will be checking IDs at the polling station, robocalls, etc.) which disproportionately target minorities and low income people (who are more likely to vote for the opposition) when faced with the fact that voter fraud is more rare than dying of leprosy, you are a bigot.
You're not going to get into an argument about language usage with me, son. I've forgotten more about language than you'll ever hope to learn.
everyone should provide evidence at the polls that they are qualified to vote (ala the Constitution). everyone. everywhere. all the time. that's not racist. that's due diligence.

Huma Abedin Under Police Protection After Threats
GROVER NORQUIST'S NAME GETS REFERENCED
(NEWSER) – The latest fallout from Michele Bachmann's Muslim infiltration conspiracy theory: Now Hillary Clinton aide Huma Abedin—whose family, Bachmann claims, is vaguely connected to the Muslim Brotherhood—has been threatened by a New Jersey man. Abedin is under police protection following the threat, and the man—a Muslim—has been questioned, the New York Post reports. Also tangled up in Bachmann's theory: Grover Norquist. The Raw Story reports that a 10-part video cited by Bachmann and her cohorts in their report claims the conservative anti-tax crusader helped the Muslim Brotherhood.

A good read on how the righties who accuse Obama of "Chicago-style politics", as I've seen several times on this forum, don't have a clue what they're talking about.
