Tonight I was treated to an inside look at the Denver Broncos training facility at Dove Valley along with 40 other members of the Denver Broncos Quarterback Club.&nbsp; The Broncos hosted the Broncos Quarterback Club as a thank you for the many years of support the members have given the team.<br />
<br />
It was a beautiful sunny July day in Denver as we approached the main offices of the Broncos:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-pbULOVj6-0w/T_-hPdwecCI/AAAAAAAACUY/D3aguLKGvo0/s1600/outside1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-pbULOVj6-0w/T_-hPdwecCI/AAAAAAAACUY/D3aguLKGvo0/s1600/outside1.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Inside the lobby:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-GPOw_dhzDJs/T_-hc_QmTNI/AAAAAAAACUg/BhJ5ssDjluY/s1600/lobby1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-GPOw_dhzDJs/T_-hc_QmTNI/AAAAAAAACUg/BhJ5ssDjluY/s1600/lobby1.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
The Broncos championship banners were prominently displayed:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-lkj_GX9pYQg/T_-hpqrDUpI/AAAAAAAACUw/1AtAa6NkSrg/s1600/lobby2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-lkj_GX9pYQg/T_-hpqrDUpI/AAAAAAAACUw/1AtAa6NkSrg/s1600/lobby2.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
As well as the team's two Super Bowl trophies:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-7rlLgEY6RMM/T_-htATnuvI/AAAAAAAACV4/BGr1Sp-H-X4/s1600/trophy1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-7rlLgEY6RMM/T_-htATnuvI/AAAAAAAACV4/BGr1Sp-H-X4/s1600/trophy1.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Next we were shown the Broncos weight room:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-t4_U92Qs2-0/T_-huIC27FI/AAAAAAAACWM/FPfmzIUQOW8/s1600/weight1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-t4_U92Qs2-0/T_-huIC27FI/AAAAAAAACWM/FPfmzIUQOW8/s1600/weight1.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Our guide explained that 90% of the equipment is new for 2012 as the Broncos are implementing a new strategy for weight training:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Ck9Q0GAX36w/T_-hsGKL6HI/AAAAAAAACVo/aQTVlfytr88/s1600/shweight2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Ck9Q0GAX36w/T_-hsGKL6HI/AAAAAAAACVo/aQTVlfytr88/s1600/shweight2.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Closeup look at one of the machines:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Aq25Due3vUY/T_-hrwkrAiI/AAAAAAAACVc/kAJZr-pCOGU/s1600/shweight1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Aq25Due3vUY/T_-hrwkrAiI/AAAAAAAACVc/kAJZr-pCOGU/s1600/shweight1.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Then we were escorted outside for a look at the practice fields.&nbsp; Two grass fields were well groomed in anticipation for the opening of training camp in a month:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-3G59t9dmTyU/T_-hpaTgryI/AAAAAAAACUo/ufmEHu-nNYE/s1600/fields.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-3G59t9dmTyU/T_-hpaTgryI/AAAAAAAACUo/ufmEHu-nNYE/s1600/fields.jpg" /></a></div>

(continued)
Then it was off to the locker room and the team meeting rooms:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qf85IUfUACY/T_-hp9Nd9AI/AAAAAAAACU4/aswPDAO6Vvs/s1600/outside2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qf85IUfUACY/T_-hp9Nd9AI/AAAAAAAACU4/aswPDAO6Vvs/s1600/outside2.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Inside a mural of all the Denver Broncos head coaches in franchise history was prominently displayed:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fct1YE3x7m0/T_-hqRDcOfI/AAAAAAAACVA/lQ-tKbMwSas/s1600/shcoach.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fct1YE3x7m0/T_-hqRDcOfI/AAAAAAAACVA/lQ-tKbMwSas/s1600/shcoach.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
There are those Super Bowl trophies again (a second copy) right outside the locker room:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CNAcO3IX3NA/T_-htrgBSII/AAAAAAAACWA/3ggWwcb6Plo/s1600/trophy2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CNAcO3IX3NA/T_-htrgBSII/AAAAAAAACWA/3ggWwcb6Plo/s1600/trophy2.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Our guide showed us team photos displayed on the wall from every Broncos squad:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-402Mr_uuFu4/T_-hq6mpwoI/AAAAAAAACVM/DsoqlgnUL4w/s1600/shlobby1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-402Mr_uuFu4/T_-hq6mpwoI/AAAAAAAACVM/DsoqlgnUL4w/s1600/shlobby1.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
We were not allowed to take photos inside the locker room.&nbsp; It was a thrill to stand right in front of Peyton Manning's locker!<br />
<br />
Next it was off to the team meeting and film room.&nbsp; This is also where the Broncos hold major press conferences:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-e0P6mslzDnY/T_-hqgt51eI/AAAAAAAACVE/zz_5d0BwsJg/s1600/shfilm1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-e0P6mslzDnY/T_-hqgt51eI/AAAAAAAACVE/zz_5d0BwsJg/s1600/shfilm1.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
The walls are covered with more motivation:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2SxTTyomBZY/T_-hrkOficI/AAAAAAAACVU/H1wFPZYDMNw/s1600/shpyramid.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2SxTTyomBZY/T_-hrkOficI/AAAAAAAACVU/H1wFPZYDMNw/s1600/shpyramid.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
We were the first members of the public to see the 2011 Denver Broncos highlight film.&nbsp; 30 minutes of memories from the amazing 2011 season, highlighted by the 80 yard TD pass from Tim Tebow to Demaryius Thomas to beat the Steelers in overtime in a playoff thriller.<br />
<br />
The highlight film featured the big plays of the 2011 season, with many comments from players in game action.&nbsp; The future hope of Peyton Manning's arrival was emphasized.&nbsp; "2011 was a good year, 2012 could be great!"<br />
<br />
Overall the evening was a fascinating look at the inside workings of the Broncos.&nbsp; The Denver Broncos Quarterback Club is one of the best kept secrets for Denver area fans.&nbsp; Members are treated to exclusive events like tonight's, speakers from current players and media, and even a chance to see a live broadcast of the coaches show during the season.&nbsp; <a href="http://www.denverbroncosqbclub.com/" target="_blank">See the club's website</a> for more details and membership info.

Really glad to see these elliptical vibrating machines. They are key to building core strength. They were invented by the Russians for their astronauts to rebuild their strength after a long stay in space. This is really going to help with cutting down on injuries.

Jerry Smith was an interim coach after Lou Saban resigned during the 71 season. Kind of like the early 70's version of Eric Studesville (he only coached a partial season). Jerry Smith died last August:

And its about Damn time. Since about 2003 I felt like we were one of the most injury prone teams (probably my homer perspective). I also remember hearing McDaniels say that one of his first decisions he made when he came in was whether or not to incorporate a yoga routine into strength and conditioning. Of course he shot it down... and injuries continued.

What is foam rolling?

from wiki

Foam rolling is a self-myofascial release (SMR) technique that is used by athletes and physical therapists to inhibit overactive muscles. This form of stretching utilizes the concept of autogenic inhibition to improve soft tissue extensibility, thus relaxing the muscle and allowing the activation of the antagonist muscle.[1]
This technique can be effective for many muscles, including: gastrocnemius, latissimus dorsi, piriformis, adductors, quadriceps, hamstrings, hip flexors, thoracic spine (trapezius and rhomboids), and TFL.
[2] It is accomplished by rolling the foam roller under each muscle group until a tender area is found, and maintaining pressure on the tender area for 3060 seconds.[3]

I started doing it after a pretty nasty car wreck, and it's incredible. A foam roller costs about $25 at your local retailer

I also gotta say, foam rolling is magical on hip flexors, knees, legs and shoulders.

You can see the first two guys working on (in order): Quad, hip flexor, IT band, hip flexor, and IT band. Hopefully they are forcing the guys to do it, because its kinda weird to do at first and slightly embarassing, but if you keep doing it over a long period of time you can reduce injuries significantly.

Some do, don't get the regular foam ones, they make better ones now that don't wear down.

http://www.amazon.com/Trigger-Point-Performance-Revolutionary-Roller/dp/B006GUC9KC/ref=sr_1_16?ie=UTF8&qid=1342200223&sr=8-16&keywords=foam+roller

Those two are pricey, but they work better and last a million times longer.

I have the rumble roller, and yes, it hurts like hell if you have a hot spot but it hurts less the more you do it. I haven't injured myself working out since starting where as before I had a new tweek every week.

P90X2 has an entire DVD dedicated to recovery and mobility and use the foam roller for half of it.

Yep, I have been doing stretches and exercises on the foam roll for PT but didn't know I could to a self massage with one, my therapist has been rolling out my IT (or is it AT?) band with something that looks like a rolling pin but didn't know I could do it with the foam roll by myself.

So how do you use it?

set the program and stand on it in different positions than switch to kneeling in front of it and put your hands on the base. There is a video that comes with the better models Avoid the cheaper ones as the motion is not true and can be harmful.

You can rapidly rebuild your core muscles when you do it right. You will feel it in a couple of weeks. Only takes about 25 minutes a day 6 days a week.

Cosmo
07-13-2012, 12:23 PM
So how do you use it?

You would think its like a rolling pin, but its not. You roll on the muscle until you find a tender spot, and you sit on it. The more you do it, the less these hot spots you will find. The crazy thing is you think you know where your hot spots are, but this foam rolling fixes the areas that are suffering from strain that lead to injuries in other places.

Ex: You pull a hammy because the muscles on your IT band and quad have been suffering.

You basically start with your calves, then peroneus (shin), then adductors, quads, IT band, hip flexors, glute, some areas around the knee. For upper body you can do your shoulders, lats, neck, lower back, forearms, pecs. Its great if you have rotator cuff issues.

But yeah, you don't roll around like you are rolling dough. You roll until you find a hot spot, then hold on it. It makes you sweat like crazy too.

The IT band stretch is MURDER the first few times. Hurts so good. One of my favorites now is the inner groin stretch. Put your leg out perpendicular to your body, then angle the roller till it's diagonal right next to your junk. if you straighten your other leg, you get leverage to push down on the inner thigh/groin area of the leg over the roller, and it's absolutely glorious. Makes for some better flexibility in the sexy time department.
