We conclude our AFC West positional rankings series with the kicking specialists. Friday, I will wrap up the ranking madness with my top 40 players in the division regardless of position. Now onto the best group of kickers and punters in the NFL. I’m not blowing smoke here. This is one deep group. Even the players at the bottom of this list are standouts:

1. Shane Lechler, Oakland: You could call him the greatest punter to ever and have a strong argument.

2. Sebastian Janikowski, Oakland: Janikowski is getting better with age. He has found consistency to go along with his spectacular leg.

3. Mike Scifres, San Diego: Always overshadowed by Lechler, Scifres is a standout himself.

4. Dustin Colquitt, Kansas City: He’d probably be the best punter in five or six divisions.

5. Matt Prater, Denver: He has a big leg and he’s clutch. He’s excellent.

6. Britton Colquitt, Denver: Dustin’s little brother is making a name for himself.

7. Ryan Succop, Kansas City: He has a long career ahead of him.

I think ol' Bill Will left out "to eat a hot dog," immediately after the word "ever."

Britton Colquitt out-kicked his brother in every statistical category, and even out-kicked Lechler. He should be higher than fourth on this list. Why isn't he?

B Colquitt deserves to be much higher. Those close games last year relied heavily on field position.

What a classic article. I am still waiting for him to compare the Top AFC West players to fast food chain restaurants.

I don't think that is that obsurd of a statement. Lechler has been a great P throughout his career setting several records. He just goes under the table in that cesspool he kicks for.

Denver kickers should be no lower than #3 and #4. Burger Bill strikes again. Did he see the correct Colquitt drop balls not only inside the 20 but inside the 10 many times during 2011?

I'd call ESPN and complain...but that would only re-enforce the idea that people read his crap.

I would hate to see our record last year without our sp teams.

They're practically even across the board stat wise. There isn't much of a difference between the two.

I'm actually pointing out Bill's failure to proof read and edit his work. Lechler's ranking is more or less ok by me. The sentence Bill has for him is: "You could call him the greatest punter to ever and have a strong argument."

Which begs the question, he is the greatest punter to ever do what? I maintain, he is the greatest punter to ever eat a hotdog. Which really puts him up there pretty high.

I'm not surprised they don't waste money paying somebody to edit this stuff.

While we did have the great high altitude of Denver, we had 8 away games and one of the home games was with the Chiefs so we had 7 high altitude games. What is amazing is Britton only had 7 Touch backs compared to 5 for Dustin (Dustin had only 89 punts compared to to 101 for Britton). Britton has 6 more inside the 20. Where is the inside the 10 yard line stat? That is where I think Britton really excelled.

BTW, NFL stats had Britton at #1 and Dustin at #5. Burger Bill didn't see this or onion grease spilled on these facts.

I wonder what Colquitt semen goes for on the black market. Seems like there's probably a demand there.

Britton had the 2nd most punts of any punter in the league.

Britton was slightly more accurate inside the 20, which is conceived.

Their return average is the same, their long is pretty much the same, their fair catches are the same, their net avg is the same.

Britton has about a 2 yard difference in gross punting average, but as you said, Denver is easier to kick in.

Britton is slightly more accurate inside the 20, but Dustin is slightly stronger punter.

I don't think one is head and shoulders above the other to be honest.

Asserting Lechler as possibly the best punter ever without even mentioning Ray Guy seems like a pretty large oversight, to me.

Broncos kicking specialists are clearly #1 and #2 (or maybe both perfectly tied at #1). And in fact have been so since 1960.

Let me just put it this way, if there is one player I could take off the faiders team from the last 10+ years it would be Lechler, that's how consistently good of a punter he has been.

TBH, I have no problem with Lechler at #1 in the AFCW. In fact, that guy is the best punter in the NFL right now. (really don't have an opinion all-time...I haven't done that much research on NFL punters from the past 7 decades)

They have enough practice! But we can't really talk though with the whole Tebow saga!

Actually, I think Lechler is a bit overrated. He's played on so many bad offensive teams and has typically longer fields to work with.

I don't know about having Janikowski that high because of his consistency problems but when he's on, he's unbelievable. And he's been better as of late.

Pretty decent list though.

Their stats are not identical, therefore one HAS to be better. And it's not a big deal that it's our guy. But it is our guy.
