Peyton working off the rust as Broncos minicamp commences

By Pete Prisco | Senior NFL Columnist

The casual eye wouldn't notice the differences, maybe a tweak here and tweak there in the pocket, but Manning can still make all the throws, can still read the field and can still command the huddle.

He fired a 35-yard shot to Demaryius Thomas for a touchdown Tuesday on a perfectly placed pass. But he also missed a throw that bounced off a receiver's hands into the arms of corner Tracy Porter, the same Porter who took back one of his picks for a touchdown to clinch the Saints victory over Manning's Colts in Super Bowl XLIV.

Manning marches toward game action

What struck me most about seeing Manning in a Denver uniform for the first time live was that everything is moving forward at the right pace. Signing him was considered a gamble in some circles, but nearly three months after Manning chose Denver over Tennessee and San Francisco (several other teams were interested as well), it doesn’t seem like a gamble.

I'm happy about Carter being the starting SS. He seems like a more natural fit, and I just hope Moore takes the FS spot. Also, Harris is taking reps with the starters at RT is pretty cool. I guess they want the best pass protecters for manning. I wouldn't mind moving Franklin inside if we have to get the best 5 out there.

Rookie LB Trevathan practices with starters
June 12, 2012 3:51 p.m. - by Andrew Mason

After inserting second-year S Rahim Moore into the first team last week, the Broncos moved him back to the second unit, but gave sixth-round pick Danny Trevathan a look at LB with the first-team nickel defense on Tuesday. "He's attacked it really well as far as in the meeting rooms, in the playbook," Coach John Fox said. "This game is so much mental and for a young guy, he's caught on pretty quickly."

Franklin could start at either LG or RG according to Stapleton... he thinks it would solve interior OL issue.

I beg to differ Harris has not shown any ability to:

stay health
run block worth a crap.

might make for a good backup.

But folks the OL is somewhere you want continuity the same guys every play all year.

The better they get to know each other the better their play is..

Lets hope they are just sending Franklin a message to step up his game..

Just reporting the news lonestar. As I recall, our running game was pretty darn good when Harris was RT. The only problem was red zone...where Kuper, Hamilton, and Wiegmann deserve more of the blame. Harris is a better pass blocking RT (when healthy) than Franklin. Keep in mind Manny Ramirez is the current starting RG. Kuper thought he was going to be back by minicamp. He's not.

Orlando Franklin would be a PERFECT Power RG, he is an elite player at that position.

i don't think Kuper deserves as much blame as the interior line's play would make you think. he is always paired with a weak center or a rookie or injured RT or both. first he has Hamilton who was a waste of space. then he gets Weigman who was ok but nearing the end of his career. now he has Walton who has been useless. then at RT he has had an injured Harris, and now rookie Franklin. not matter how good he is, the mediocre players around him have made him look bad.

Whoa, whoa, whoa there buddy.

The game overtook smaller O-linemen like Hamilton, and he just wasn't ever going to be a 315 lb guard, but I don't think you could ever, ever call Hamilton a waste of space. Ben Hamilton was an absolute warrior for the Broncos for a long time, and fought like an animal for this team every play. He just wasn't big/heavy enough to consistently fight off the growing size/speed combinations of today's NFL d-lines.

Don't rag on Hamilton, he gave everything he had.

Funny, that a number of people got butt-hurt when some of us suggested that this might happen. If healthy, (big, big, if) Harris is outstanding in pass protection. Move Franklin to maul people inside and get Beadles the **** off the field.

If Harris beats out Franklin, and Franklin beats out Beadles, I will be a happy camper. Not as happy as the RBs and Manning but happy. Beadles doesn't belong on a starting oline. Anything they can do to replace him. Hell if that rookie safety then beat our walton we might have something.

I am still surprised that Manning is able to throw everyday. Maybe he has turned the corner and the stems cells and 4 fusions are the answer.

2nd session of 11-on-11's from Wednesday's practice (Dmac on 104.3 the Fan (http://www.1043thefan.com/podcasts/Episodes.aspx?PID=1623)) transcript:

Manning No-Huddle:
1st play - slight overthrow to Jacob Tamme
2nd play - Manning to Tamme, great connection
3rd play - to Decker, a tight small window completion down the right sideline over Champ
4th play - a deep throw, bullet to Demaryius Thomas down the left sideline
5th play - bullet to Jason Hill, right in his hands, dropped
Final play - play action pass completion to Matthew Willis across the middle

Most impressive practice from a QB that Dmac has ever seen (in 12 years of going to Broncos practice). There were a couple drops. There were some passes that were jaw-dropping awesome moments.

Dmac (on 104.3 the Fan) -
"You will know Jacob Tamme. You will know Joel Dreessen."
"Brandon Stokley is always open, and always catches the ball."
"The Offense had precision, with the ball in small windows, defense did not play bad, good coverage, great plays, great passes."

Jacob Tamme (on 104.3 the Fan, with Drew and Scott) - Offense is "getting close"...

2. Dennis Allen beat down Rahim Moore mentally last year... cursed a ton at him "Get over there you dumb bleep bleep bleep".
3. Richard Smith (LB coach) was also tough on Von Miller last year.
4. Freaky athletic demonstration by Von Miller today. Ran with Mcgahee down the field step-for-step for 40 yards...barely dropping the interception.
5. Watching Peyton Manning coach the coaches... Manning corrected Adam Gase, often tellling him what to do in a red-zone drill. Very unique for an NFL QB to do that. Not even John Elway would correct the coaches.
6. Drayton Florence was working in as the Nickle CB.
7. They say that Manning is RUNNING THE OFFENSE.

Dmac and Big Al (104.3 the Fan):

1. Rahim Moore back with the 1st team. They are giving him a real legit shot.

i am waiting for the report of Manning telling McCoy to go to his room and wait there until someone wants to hear his opinion.

Ha! Yeah, it sounds like Manning finally took it into his own hands today (with Tom Moore watching again). It's pretty obvious, how much more effective Manning's No-Huddle is against the Defense, than McCoy's traditional approach. How anyone could consider McCoy, Gase, or any other yahoo that they have on the Offensive coaching staff, more qualified to run a top-scoring NFL Offense, than Peyton Manning, is beyond me.

Number of seasons playing or coaching in the NFL:
Peyton Manning - 13
Mike McCoy - 12

Number of seasons with a top 3 NFL scoring Offense:
Peyton Manning - 10
Mike McCoy - 0

mini camp is so lame and boring. Only thing that makes it somewhat interesting is having Manning. I bet some of these guys that are running first team right now wont even make the team or will barely play once the regular season starts.

Hamilton is a great player and a great locker room presence..
