LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Now that Brian Banks has been exonerated of a rape conviction that put him in prison for five years, the one-time prep football star has a message for NFL coaches: Give him a chance.

After Thursday's emotional court hearing during which Banks broke down in tears, the 26-year-old said he wants to pursue his interrupted dream of playing professional football.

Appearing Friday on NBC's "Today" show, Banks said he just wants a chance from an NFL team.

"I think that any team that gives me an opportunity will be really impressed with what I can do despite all of what I've been through these past 10 years," Banks said.

AP Photo/Nick UtBrian Banks broke into tears after hearing that his rape conviction was dismissed Thursday.

It was the plan he left outside a prison door when he pleaded no contest to a childhood friend's false accusation of rape in 2002, a claim she now has recanted.

Another great story from my city. Geeze what a horrid thing to do to a young man. Not only should they have to pay back 1.5 million, they should owe that young man 5 yrs worth of what an NFL salary would be for his position. Of course chances are I have to pay for it again. My friggin city is always getting sued. There was this church the city hall fought with, then church sued them, they took 10 million dollars from us, moved church to Los Alamitos and built this huge church. God Bless Long Beach.

Several NFL teams are willing to give Brian Banks a chance to fulfill his dream of playing pro football.

ESPN columnist Rick Reilly tells the story of Brian Banks, a wrongly convicted rapist who wants his long-desired shot at playing in the NFL. Story

Banks, who last week was exonerated of a rape conviction that put him in prison for five years, told ESPN columnist Rick Reilly that he'll work out with the Seattle Seahawks on June 7. The Washington Redskins, Kansas City Chiefs and Miami Dolphins also have called to talk to him about a tryout.

"I'll make 'em happy," Banks, who's been training non-stop since October, told Reilly on Tuesday. "After all I've been through these last 10 years, I can still do some things that will impress you."

Terrible story. Hopefully he can sue the family that collected the 1.5 million.

Honestly though a 26-year-old with no college game experience has virtually a 0 percent chance of making an NFL roster. Does he have any college eligibility left? If so, why doesn't he try to play for an FCS school for a couple of years, get an education and then see if he can get drafted. He would still be under 30.

Also just read in today's paper this bitch spent all the 1.5 million, is on welfare, and is delinquent on her child support payments.

1.5 million? I thought the one article I read $750K. Whatever, not the point I know. I am wondering about his idiot/hack lawyer in the original case. he told him he'd get 40 years for rape? Who gets 40 years for Rape? Nobody gets 40 years for rape, unless maybe it's a pedophile type thing. in his case, there were no witnesses, no semen present, what the hell case could they have possibly built just on the word of one girl? Rape is a bitch and a half to convict on just the he said she said principle. I smell something odd and not just the his shake down. That school wanted this **** hushed up and that lawyer ought to lose his damned ability to practice law. Sheesh. that is just wow. It's hard enough to get people to believe a rape occurs. false accusations only make it harder for people who've actually been raped to ever come forward. People really suck sometimes.

seems as if something funny happened with this case. just doesn't pass the sniff test. no lawyer can be that damn dumb. eventually public defenders have aspirations to be DA's or work for a private firm i would assume.

The lawyer didn't lose. He copped a plea which looks like a win. He got the best deal for his client without ever having to actually take the case to trial. In our f*cked legal system, that's a win.

The system, if you're young and black, sucks. The lawyer was right. When a jury sees a big black kid accused of rape, it's going to take a miracle for them to acquit him. It's not the defender you should be pissed at, it's the police and prosecutors who have lost their damn minds.

They aren't interested in justice, they're interested in convictions. They are absolutely ok with rail-roading an innocent kid to jail by threatening major prison time (40 years in this case) for plea-deals that still put the kid in jail and his innocence or guilt doesn't matter.

We incarcerate more people than any other country in the world, and it's not even close (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_incarceration_rate). This type of nonsense is why. Our entire justice system needs an overhaul.

I wish my brother was in town he knows all these dudes. When he gets back i will ask him if he knows who the attorney was. What a joke of a case because that plea deal cost city a bunch of money. They should have put her on stand, i bet she would have cracked wide open. Liars often lie themselves into a hole with the right questioning. I watch my brother do it all the time. Brian Banks To Get Tryout With Redskins

Shanahan said he recently called Banks, 26, to offer him the tryout after hearing about the ordeal.

“I think when somebody goes through the situation that he went through, you know, he deserves an opportunity to try out for somebody,” Shanahan told reporters after Thursday’s round of organized team activities at Redskins Park. “Concerning what he went through — just reading about it, I don’t know him personally — I called him up and said, ‘Hey, we’d love to have you out.’”

I heard he doesn't look like a pro athlete at all. I doubt he can play. Just because you looked good when you were 17 means crap at 28. You just can't skip that many years in the heart of the time you should be learning the game for the next level.

It's a nice story but more for show I think. Better for NFL to hire him as a public speaker. Send him to schools around the country talking to athletes about staying out of bad situations.

I agree. He seems like an intelligent young man (judging from the interviews) and should really be pursuing higher education and the possibility of playing football at a DII level while he gets a BA, rather than chasing an NFL dream that is never going to happen. I guarantee you that if he has eligibility (which it seems like he would) that any number of FCS schools would give a 5 star high school recruit a scholarship, or at the very least an opportunity to walk-on and get back in shape. Best case scenario he lives up to his potential, plays for a couple of years and still gets drafted before he turns 30. Worst case he gets a degree and the opportunity to find a decent job.

As it stands now, he's basically going to be a PR prop for a few weeks and get cut after the media cycle gets tired of the story.
