OSTRAVA, Czech Republic (AP) Usain Bolt won the 100 meters at the Golden Spike meet Friday, his first victory in Europe ahead of the London Olympics.

The Jamaican, who won three gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Games, had a slow start but pulled ahead in the final stretch to finish in 10.04 seconds.

Bolt, who failed to improve his season best of 9.82 from a May meet in Jamaica, sounded disappointed with the time.

"It's hard to explain. I don't really know what went wrong," Bolt said.

Ahead of the race, Bolt said he was working on his notoriously slow start to improve and be ready to attack his world records in the 100 and 200 in London.

"At the start I didn't feel explosive as I normally feel like," he said.

Kim Collins of St. Kitts and Nevis finished second in 10.19 and American sprinter Darvis Patton was third in 10.22.

This was his sixth competition in Ostrava.

"I was looking to coming here for a good time. I guess it's one of those days," he said. "I just never got going."

The runners had to start twice after Simon Magakwe false started.

That was something familiar for Bolt who failed to defend the world championship title in the 100 in Daegu, South Korea, after he was disqualified for a false start.

But Bolt said that was not a problem for him today. He said he felt good ahead of the race.

"I did some starts and I was flying from the blocs so I said 'yeah this is good'. I can't tell you what happened."

Bolt will have another chance to lower his times in Diamond League meets in Rome on May 31 and Oslo, Norway, on June 7 before returning to Jamaica for the national trials.

In the meantime, he said he will seek advice from his coach.

"I have to look at the tape and
see what went wrong and call my coach to explain

Denver should draft him.

I'm surprised the Raiders didn't use a first round pick on him in 2009 just in case he decided to try football.

I think he went to some offseason workouts a few years ago. Being the fastest man in the history of the world isn't as lucrative as you think it would be.

The new knee pad rules would slow him down anyways.

I love when the athletes are so far above the competition that they are forced to get angry with themselves at not meeting personal goals.

it's the curse of MJ. once he won titles he was so far above others that he invented stuff in his head to motivate him.

I think this can apply to career as well.

It's such a ridiculous concept to "screw up" and run a 10.04/100 at 6'4" 200 pounds. To put this into perspective Deion Sanders fastest 100 time ever was 10.21. Bo Jackson's fastest was 10.34. Darrell Green, probably the fastest guy to ever play in the NFL ran a 10.08 100.

Playing football is about a lot more then running fast. Hard to just become a pro at it IMO. Now if he had played growing up, played in college, but I don't think he ever did.

No doubt, but still the fact that a 200 pound 6'4" man can "screw up" and still run faster in a straight line than the most elite of the elite burners in NFL history is incredible. I've gotta confess I have sort of a man crush on Bolt. There was a time when a sub 10 second 100 was thought to be impossible, and he's run an electronically timed 9.58. Also, it's not like he's technically perfect.

If I'm not mistaken, Bullet Bob Hayes won the 100 meters at the 1964 Olympics in 10.4, and was declared the world's fastest human. Amazing, considering that Bolt called his 10.4 time not very good. Guys (and girls, for that matter) have sure gotten FASTER over the last half century it appears!!

It's too early to run in the 9.8's because he will peak to early. To say he ran a 10.04 a couple of months before the Olympics is still pretty good. That dude is a beast.
