This is the weirdest news of the day.

Tea Party hero Michele Bachmann and her husband became citizens of Switzerland two months ago. She has nothing but good things to say about the socialist country,

“it’s tough to find a place not to like in Switzerland.”

Informed that she can now seek office,

“Really?” Bachmann said, drawing laughter from members of the Swiss parliament who stood behind her. “Well, as you can see, there’s a lot of competition behind me that I would have to run against, and it’d be very stiff because they’re very good.”

The Social Democratic Party has governed Switzerland as part of a grand coalition since 1959. They support an extensive government role in the economy.

On an unrelated note, Switzerland has escaped recession, and currently has a 3.4% unemployment rate.

You can't compare small, rich countries like Switzerland to the USA. What works in a country that doesn't allow immigration unless you have money, will not work in the USA. I mean cmon they have 7 million people. We have that just in illegal immigrants.

Do you know why you have illegal immigrants? because you only allow immigration for people with money.

This is a very weird situation. A person can't hold a security clearance if they have citizenship elsewhere. I don't see why she would do that if she has any aspirations of participating in anything involving national security. I don't know if she's on any committees already but it could just make the whole situation messy.

I wonder if Switzerland - or any Nordic country - would be an example of how "socialism doesn't work!" if they had high unemployment and a horrible recession, or if it wouldn't matter because it's small.

Trust me, there will always be some kind of excuse. Always.

Not that I care about the rest of the debate, but it sounds like she's been a dual citizen for more than 30 years (long before she was a member of congress)

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0512/76142.html

I'd prefer she renounce that somehow now that it's been made an issue, but it's not like this is a decision she made a few weeks ago or anything.

According to her version of events, Bachmann has known she was a Swiss citizen for approximately 34 years. However, she never disclosed her citizenship while running for Congress and president of the United States.

Her office said that such a disclosure was not necessary.

That needs to change or the 'birthers' will be on her case. ;)

Oh, no, they're sane, vigilant and stopping terrorists, one President at a time. ;D

Hahahah Bachman has renounced her swiss citizenship!!! Hilarious!

Tea Partiers, you can put down ur pitchforks and burnin' sticks. Bachmann has left that evil land of socialism behind, and once again supports pure Corporatocracy.

“Today I sent a letter to the Swiss Consulate requesting withdrawal of my dual Swiss citizenship, which was conferred upon me by operation of Swiss law when I married my husband in 1978.”

“I took this action because I want to make it perfectly clear: I was born in America and I am a proud American citizen. I am, and always have been, 100 percent committed to our United States Constitution and the United States of America. As the daughter of an Air Force veteran, stepdaughter of an Army veteran and sister of a Navy veteran, I am proud of my allegiance to the greatest nation the world has ever known.”

And she had no choice - conservatives were OUTRAGED! Look at this,

You don't make sense. Smaller populations and land mass will be easier to manage no matter what. You don't see the huge huge difference between 7 million mouths to take care of, and 300 million? Especially considering the Swiss don't let poor immigrants come take services.

So what is the biggest country that has used socialism and kicked ass? I am asking I don't know do you?

On the other hand, Switzerland has always been surrounded by sometimes-hostile nations, is entirely landlocked, and has very little in the way of natural resources.

Actually the Swiss had a great spot. For one they imposed heavy duties going way back on good passing through from Italy to Germany. Then they had banking. Since the middle ages they have been a banking country. Then to top it off they made a ton on ww2 selling war supplies to both the allied and axis countries.

Really the swiss are the last country liberals should look up to. They never fight, even when Europe being ravaged by a madman. They could care less as long as they make money off it. I shudder to think all the dead jewish money they probably sucked up.

I just don't agree that the Swiss can be some model of how great socialism works.
