(NaturalNews) The news you are about to read puts everything else in the category of "insignificant" by comparison. Concerned about the 2012 U.S. presidential election? Worried about GMOs? Fluoride? Vaccines? Secret prisons? None of that even matters if we don't solve the problem of ***ushima reactor No. 4, which is on the verge of a catastrophic failure that could unleash enough radiation to end human civilization on our planet. (See the numbers below.)
The resulting releasing of radiation would turn North America into a "dead zone" for humans... mutated (and failed) crops, radioactive groundwater, skyrocketing infant mortality, an explosion in cancer and infertility... this is what could be unleashed at any moment from an earthquake in Japan. Such an event could result in the release of 85 times the Cesium-137 released by the Chernobyl catastrophe, say experts (see below). And the Chernobyl catastrophe made its surrounding regions uninhabitable by humans for centuries.
Yet, astonishingly, the usual suspects of deception are saying absolutely nothing about this problem. The mainstream media (the dying dinosaur media, actually) pretends there's no problem with ***ushima. President Obama says nothing about it. Federal regulators, including the NRC, are all but silent. It's as if they think their silence on the issue somehow makes it go away.
Perhaps these professional liars in the media and government have become so used to idea that they can simply spin their own reality (and get the public suckers to believe almost anything) that they now believe they can ignore the laws of physics. That's why they have refused to cover the low-level radiation plume that continues to be emitted from ***ushima.
The fate of the world now rests on reactor No. 4
"It is no exaggeration to say that the fate of Japan and the whole world depends on No.4 reactor." - Mitsuhei Murata, Former Japanese Ambassador to Switzerland and Senegal, Executive Director, the Japan Society for Global System and Ethics
Mr. Murata's stunning statement should be front-page news everywhere around the world. Why? Because he's right. If reactor No. 4 suffers even a minor earthquake, it could set off a chain reaction of events that quickly lead to North America becoming uninhabitable by humans for centuries to come. Imagine California, Oregon and Washington states being inundated with radiation -- up to 85 times the radiation release from Chernobyl. We're talking about the end of human life on the scale of continents.
Here's how this could happen, according to Mr. Robert Alvarez, former Senior Policy Adviser to the Secretary and Deputy Assistant Secretary for National Security and the Environment at the U.S. Department of Energy:
"The No. 4 pool is about 100 feet above ground, is structurally damaged and is exposed to the open elements. If an earthquake or other event were to cause this pool to drain this could result in a catastrophic radiological fire involving nearly 10 times the amount of Cs-137 released by the Chernobyl accident. The infrastructure to safely remove this material was destroyed as it was at the other three reactors. Spent reactor fuel cannot be simply lifted into the air by a crane as if it were routine cargo. In order to prevent severe radiation exposures, fires and possible explosions, it must be transferred at all times in water and heavily shielded structures into dry casks. As this has never been done before, the removal of the spent fuel from the pools at the damaged ***ushima-Dai-Ichi reactors will require a major and time-consuming re-construction effort and will be charting in unknown waters." (http://www.nuc.berkeley.edu/forum/218/nuclear-expert-***ushima-spent-...)
Note: He says "10 times" the Cesium-137 of Chernobyl. Others say up to 85 times. Nobody is 100% certain of what would actually occur because this has never happened before. We are in uncharted territory as a civilization, facing a unique and imminent threat to our continued survival. And both governments and the corporations that assured us nuclear power was safe are playing their "cover my ass" games while the world waits in the crosshairs of a nuclear apocalypse.
To better understand the severity of this situation, read these facts about ***ushima reactor No. 4 which I have assembled from available news sources:
• Reactor #4 contains 1,535 spent fuel rods which remain highly radioactive.
• These fuel rods currently hold the potential to emit 37 million curies of radiation.
• Those fuel rods are stored in a concrete pool located 100 feet above the ground, inside the structurally compromised reactor building, effectively making the pool open to the air.
• The pool holding these fuel rods is "structurally damaged."
• "If an earthquake or other event were to cause this pool to drain this could result in a catastrophic radiological fire involving nearly 10 times the amount of Cs-137 released by the Chernobyl accident." - Mr. Robert Alvarez, former Senior Policy Adviser to the Secretary and Deputy Assistant Secretary for National Security and the Environment at the U.S. Department of Energy.
• "The infrastructure to safely remove this material was destroyed as it was at the other three reactors." - Mr. Alvarez.
• Just 50 meters from reactor No. 4, a much larger pool of spent fuel rods contains 6,375 fuel rods, all of which remain highly radioactive.
• All these fuel rods are, astonishingly, exposed to the open air. They are not held inside any containment vessel.
• The total number of spent fuel rods across all six reactors at the ***ushima Daiichi site is 11,421.
• If reactor No. 4 suffers a structural failure, the release of radiation from the 1,535 spent fuel rods would make it virtually impossible for work to continue on the site, potentially resulting in an inability to halt a massive radiation release from all the other rods.
• In all, the 11,421 fuel rods held at the ***ushima Daiichi facility contain roughly 336 million curies of "long-lived radioactivity." Roughly 134 million curies of that is Cesium-137.
• "Reactors that have been operating for decades, such as those at the ***ushima-Dai-Ichi site have generated some of the largest concentrations of radioactivity on the planet." - Mr. Robert Alvarez, U.S. Dept. of Energy
• This amount of Cesium-137 radioactivity held in the full collection of fuel rods at ***ushima is 85 times the amount released at Chernobyl.
• The release of this amount of Cesium-137 would "destroy the world environment and our civilization. This is an issue of human survival." (http://akiomatsumura.com/2012/04/682.html)
• The mainstream media operates in a total blackout of this news, refusing to even acknowledge the existence of this immediate threat to human civilization.
• The mainstream media is, in large part, owned by General Electric, the very company that designed the ***ushima reactors in the first place. It is clear that GE is diligently running a total media blackout on this news in order to cover its own ass and prevent people from asking questions about the faulty engineering and nuclear facility site selection that led to this catastrophe.
18,000 dead so far and hundreds of millions at risk: The media cover-up
"The executive branch and multiple federal agencies, agencies tasked with keeping the American public safe, did their best to hide and to cover-up information about a deadly radioactive plume and ensuing fallout that was headed for the West Coast of the United States from Japan," says Alexander Higgins. (http://blog.alexanderhiggins.com/2012/03/01/plumegate-media-silent-fe...)
He goes on to state "The evidence obtained in the FOIA request indicates that right from the start, the NRC had a clear idea of the significance of the disaster that was unfolding, but concealed the truth from the American public. The results of the plume and fallout can be measured in the rise of infant mortality rates: cells of unborn and newborn children are dividing at a much higher rate than those of a mature adult, thus the amount of damage is greatly increased and hence more detectable. Conservative estimates place the number of stillborn following the ***ushima accident at over 18,000."
See the FOIA documents here:
The conspiracy cover-up of the radioactive plumes still being emitted from ***ushima is now being called "Plume-Gate." This issue needs to be front and center on all our radar screens. There may quite literally be nothing more important for the survival of the human race than dealing with this runaway issue of ***ushima radiation in the immediate term, and the larger issue of the scientific fraud of nuclear power "safety" thereafter.
As Higgins explains, "It is this author's opinion that any media source not shouting about Plume-Gate as loud as they can are likely controlled by the powers-that-be." He's got a point. This should be our No. 1 issue, and NaturalNews is re-shifting priorities right now to help raise the alarm on the impeding ***ushima disaster for the obvious reason that everything else pales in comparison to the importance of dealing with this.
Take action now
Although I hate to call for the UN to do anything at all, as it is a criminal globalist organization engaged in widespread sex slave trafficking, child abuse and mass murder, the UN definitely has some pull with governments around the world. The petition linked below calls for the UN to take immediate, decisive action to deal with ***ushima reactor No. 4 before it's too late and we all get "***'ed" beyond repair.
This petition calls for two actions:
1. The United Nations should organize a Nuclear Security Summit to take up the crucial problem of the ***ushima Daiichi Unit 4 spent nuclear fuel pool.
2. The United Nations should establish an independent assessment team on ***ushima Daiichi Unit 4 and coordinate international assistance in order to stabilize the unit's spent nuclear fuel and prevent radiological consequences with potentially catastrophic consequences.
Here at NaturalNews, although we hold the UN in contempt for its globalist actions and crimes against humanity, we nevertheless support this particular petition and the urgent effort for the UN to actually do something positive for a change. In fact, if the UN ignores this issue, that itself would be the greatest crime of all against humanity, for failure to solve this reactor No. 4 situation could mean the end of human civilization as we know it.
NaturalNews will continue to cover this issue, especially focusing on reactor No. 4. We are reaching out to Higgins and Gunderson to conduct more interviews on this subject. Watch for more coverage here at NaturalNews.com.

(Excerpt from Naked at the Mic, Revised and Updated edition to be published later this year by Open Books)
On March 11, 2011 a 9.0 earthquake hit Japan and destroyed the ***ashima nuclear power plant rupturing its reactors. The Tsunami that immediately followed the quake destroyed the generators that kept water flowing through the reactors to keep the nuclear heating rods cool. Without these generators fresh water was unable to flow into the reactors and the reactor cores reached levels of over 5,000 degrees Fahrenheit, and the core of reactors One, Two, Three and Four began to melt down. As of this writing on May 22, 2011 the ***ashima power plant is unapproachable by plant workers due to the extreme heat of the cores and due to extreme amount of radiation released from the plant. Reports from Japanese news agencies recently stated that it was literally raining radiation in Japan. Parents were advised by the Japanese government’s announcements to have children dressed in complete rain gear and use umbrellas. Schools have been closed and Japan is experiencing radiation levels that far exceed the recorded levels after the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. World news sources have censored most news from Japan regarding ***ashima. Radioactive cloud following the Jet Stream has been detected by satellite as covering the U.S and Europe. Plutonium has been detected leaking from the melt down reactors into the ground and ocean waters near the ***ashima plant. The ecological devastation caused by ***ashima may take years to realize, as an estimated one third of the world oceans as well as more than half of the country of Japan may be completely uninhabitable, and one third of all ocean life will be destroyed. As reported by ABC News on 4/6/11,in a article from ABC Health News,... “The ***ushima disaster has become more than a local, regional or national Japanese event. The worldwide implications of the event are becoming apparent: though a major leak in a maintenance pit of the plant has been plugged, there is still a great likelihood that significant amounts of radioactive water will continue to be released into the Pacific Ocean; the worldwide Just-In-Time manufacturing cycle has been interrupted; and increased levels of radiation have been detected on the U.S. East Coast…”
The meltdown of the Japanese ***ashima reactors is the prophecy fulfilled by the Anti Nuclear Power activists of the 1970s. A video report by Japan’s newsonline.com ( nexuscommunity.com ) states that the water surrounding the ***ashima plant was 7.5 million times the acceptable safe levels of radiation. Also reports by independent sources show released government satellite images of radiation clouds crossing the Pacific Ocean and covering North America. San Francisco had surface water levels at 14,000 times the acceptable safety rate for radiation. National news broadcasts have reported Boston Massachusetts had surface water levels of 800 times the acceptable safety rate of radiation. Northern and Central Europe have reported 100s of times the acceptable rate for air and water.
Andy Coghian, reporting for Short Sharp Science in his article,” ***ashima Leak is plugged, Tepco in more Hot Water”, states: Now the leak has been plugged, the hope is that there will be no further releases of radiation either to the atmosphere or to the ocean. But levels of radiation in the four worst-affected units remain high - so high that, according to one recent report, they're "off the scale".
In Chapter two of this book, I mention my friend Joe Besade. Joe was a fierce anti-nuclear activist who’s incredible courage and commitment and courage of others brought the closing of the Millstone nuclear power plant in Waterford, Connecticut in 1996.
Joe was the steamfitter foreman, during the building of the Millstone plant. Once he saw the corruption, and incompetence of the people in charge of building and operating the power plant he became obsessed by his need to warn the state and his community about the problems he saw in the building of the power plant. One of his proven claims was; that the Steamfitters Union was in collusion with North East Utilities in hiring unqualified steamfitters and plumbers. Joe testified that he witnessed the state licensing tests were rigged for those working on the Millstone Plant, because of the lack of licensed steamfitters needed to build the plant. Joe was the Steam Fitter’s foreman of the plant. Joe was a Master licensed commercial plumber for 30 years.
He knew that the men who were hired were not qualified to work on a nuclear power plant. This happened with many of the trades. Electricians were unqualified but passed the licensing test. This was told to Joe by his close friend and plant Electrician Supervisor after his complaints were ignored by the state and the company. His life was threatened on several occasions by the unqualified workers, who attempted to electrocute him. He was fired by the company shortly after his complaints were made. He joined forces with Joe as a whistleblower and joined the Connecticut Coalition against Millstone which became a formidable citizens action group that galvanized the Waterford community and forced politicians to review their claims to halt construction of the plant and prosecute North East Utilities and the unions.
In 2001 I made a two and a half hour documentary on the Connecticut Coalition against Millstone. I featured the men and women who courageously fought their 20 year battle against the nuclear power plant in their community. Joe Besade filmed over 10 thousand hours of public hearings and aired them on the Eastern Cable Access stations that serviced Waterford and surrounding towns, and featured them on his weekly cable access television show.
It was the fierce activism of the Coalition against Millstone and the courageous legal actions of Attorney Nancy Burton co founder of Connecticut Coalition against Millstone that led to the closing of the Millstone plant. In 2000 the closed plant was purchased for 10 cents on the dollar by a private company called Dominion. Dominion was allowed by a corrupt Dept of Utility Control, to reopen Millstone under a 20 year permit. The plant was already closed for four years and had been proven unsafe, North East Utilities was found negligent in the construction of the plant and was forced to close Millstone, and fined 10 million dollars. Joe and the Coalition fiercely fought to keep the plant closed but to no avail. This is where I came in to the picture and made my documentary in May, 2001featured on all community access stations throughout Connecticut.
In making this documentary I learned that the NRC the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the (supposed) watchdog committee for the nuclear industry is paid for by the nuclear industry and its commissioners are all selected by the nuclear industry. Little if any government oversight is involved with decisions affecting the nuclear industry except for each state’s Dept. of Public Utility Control which grants operating permits and oversees rate hikes.
At the same time I was creating this documentary on the Coalition against Millstone, I was fighting my own battle with the Connecticut Dept. of Utility Control. I learned just how corrupt this state agency of politically appointed commissioners really was. I had filed suit against AT&T to manage my local Public Cable Access station and claimed 100s of thousands of dollars that were owed to the community by AT&T for not providing Community Access Television to their North Western Connecticut cable franchise area. They were charging their subscribers for the service each month without providing service. When I proved this to the DPUC, and filed as an intervener in AT&T’s franchise renewal agreement with the state, I developed a strong case against AT&T which was upheld and defended by the Connecticut Consumer Council’s attorneys. The lies, contempt and evasion of AT&T in their defense were obscene. The collusion of the DPUC and AT&T was undeniable, and brought forth in legal argument by the Consumer Council’s chief attorney. The judgment of the DPUC was hotly contested by the Council’s attorney who sited 22 flagrant errors and omissions in their Final Decision. ( This is all public record. ) When confronted in oral argument in a public hearing by the Council’s chief attorney, the DPUC Chairman stated that he would take the Council’s criticism under advisement, however never changed the decision. In the DPUC’s original decision I was granted the management of the television station, my final request advocated by the Consumer Council’s Attorney was that a full audit be conducted to verify all monies owed to the community. While waiting for this audit to be done, the final decision was suddenly rescinded and an audit was never done. AT&T created another local non profit group to challenge my application and the DPUC’s final decision. The AT&T group did not require an audit nor did it ask for any verification of AT&T funding of the Access system.
I understood after this two year fight with the DPUC and AT&T that Connecticut had the most corrupt political appointees in the nation. They were all appointed by former Governor John Rowland the most corrupt GOP Governor Connecticut has ever produced. In February of 2003 he was arrested for fraud and corruption, and served one year and one day in Federal prison. His Lt. Governor who was also under suspicion of fraud was made Governor by a Democratic legislature and kept the corrupt DPUC commission unchanged. The DPUC allowed the Millstone plant to be reopened under the protests of thousands of state residents and several leading state legislators. Connecticut is a politically corrupt state and will continue to be if nothing is done. So far as of this writing in 2011, no significant changes have been made to the DPUC and the Millstone nuclear power plant, still in operation on extended permit, has been recently cited as one of the most unsafe nuclear power plants in the U.S.
From my experience and research regarding the oversight and regulatory agencies involved in protecting the public from the utility companies and corruption in the nuclear power industry, I have a complete lack of faith in the safety of nuclear power plants, and could never under any circumstances support the use of nuclear power. Einstein was quoted as stating regarding nuclear energy for power plants: “It’s a hell of a way to heat water.”
An article from Alexander Higgins Blog dated 4/19/11 states, “Nuclear Expert Arnie Gundersen talks about the danger involved with the ***ushima Nuclear reactors saying Tepco’s plan to stop the radiation from leaking in 6 to 9 months is a “really optimistic schedule”. He also reveals that there are 20 plants in the US with the same design as the ***ushima reactor which means they have the same vulnerabilities to catastrophe.”
Real News Reporter website in an article dated 4/11/11 states:
“Secret Weapons Program Inside ***ushima Nuclear Plant? A fire ignited inside the damaged housing of the Unit 4 reactor, reportedly due to overheating of spent uranium fuel rods in a dry cooling pool. But the size of the fire indicates that this reactor was running hot for some purpose other than electricity generation. Its omission from the list of electricity-generating operations raises the question of whether Unit 4 was being used to enrich uranium, the first step of the process leading to extraction of weapons-grade fissionable material.
…”The bloom of irradiated seawater across the Pacific comprises another piece of the puzzle, because its underground source is untraceable (or, perhaps, unmentionable). The flooded labyrinth of pipes, where the bodies of two missing nuclear workers—never before disclosed to the press— were found, could well contain the answer to the mystery: a lab that none dare name.”
The censorship of accurate reporting from Japan and ***ashima since April 2011 one month after the disaster has been stifling. As stated by Vivian Norris in HUFFWORLD 5/9/2011, in her article Deadly Silence on ***ashima, she quotes a Russian nuclear physicist who states: “I have been following the ***ushima story very closely since the earthquake and devastating tsunami. I have asked scientists I know, nuclear physicists and others about where they find real information. I have also watched as the news has virtually disappeared. There is something extremely disturbing going on…”
In the same article Norris says: Uesugi stated that since March 11th, the government has excluded all internet media and all foreign media from official press conferences on the "Emergency Situation." While foreign media have scrambled to gather information about the ***ushima Reactor, they have been denied access to the direct information provided by the government and one consequence of this is that "rumor-rife news has been broadcast overseas."
This censorship does not surprise me; however the scope of the ***ashima disaster has global implications. Why the national and international media are not demanding release of current information from Japan is unforgivable. The only reason for this is that the crisis is so big it cannot be contained. I have seen independent reports on Youtube by scientists and concerned citizens displaying classified information and satellite tracking maps on the global radiation plumes coming from Japan, crossing over the U.S and Europe.
Meanwhile as the censorship continues, TEPCO and the Japanese government have found a way to clean up a few troubled urban neighborhoods by finding unemployed and expendable Japanese to clean up ***ashima. This is verified in an article from Japan Today, entitled, “Reports that the TEPCO is finding its Cleanup Workers for ***ashima from the poorest Neighborhoods in Japan.”
“On March 17, a week after the disastrous earthquake and tsunami that struck the Tohoku region, a notice was posted at a worker recruitment center in Airin, the rundown neighborhood of Osaka’s Nishinari Ward where thousands of impoverished day laborers congregate in search of construction and other blue-collar jobs.
As reported in Asahi Geino (May 26), the ad read, “Wanted: drivers for 10-ton trucks in Onagawa, Miyagi Prefecture. Pay: 12,000/day.”
But two workers who signed up for the jobs instead found themselves dispatched to work at the damaged nuclear complex in ***ushima Prefecture.
On May 14, the (Japanese) media reported the death of a man in his 60s who’d been working at the No. 4 reactor at the ***ushima nuclear power complex. The cause of death was determined to be heart failure, probably brought on by his working successive 12-hour shifts.
In Shukan Asahi a source who knew the deceased tells the magazine that it’s fairly common to see men in their 60s laboring at such jobs. “Previously, 55 had been the cutoff age, but with the accident they’ll take older workers.”
Perhaps reflecting the sense of desperation over the nuclear crisis, working conditions for the men inside the plant appear to be brutal. They don’t announce it, but on site, workers are collapsing almost daily due to bone fractures or heatstroke,” the source tells Shukan Asahi. “It’s being hushed up. Spreading the word will just make the subcontractor look bad to Tokyo Electric Power, so nobody says anything.”
The following articles and headlines are a few gathered from The Coalition against Millstone’s website mothballmillstone.org. and can be read in their entirety on that website. To the coalition’s great credit, sensitive and censored information is being made available to the public regarding ***ashima and the unsafe conditions of nuclear reactors around the U.S and the world. Please support their valiant efforts to stop the proliferation of nuclear power plants.
The Japanese Business Press reported on May 14 that,”A rice field more than 50 kilometers away from the ***ushima nuclear plant has tested for high levels of deadly plutonium. A “certain food manufacturing company” conducted the independent test that reported data different from data the Japanese government released, according to a translation of the news article.”

***ushima evacuees denied refuge and medical treatment over radiation fears
The Telegraph of London has reported that refugees (including children) from the evacuation surrounding the ***ushima Daiichi nuclear power plant are being denied entry into emergency shelters, as well as medical treatment, due to fears of providers over the radioactivity "contagion" they may carry. This is reminiscent not only of the experiences suffered by Hibakusha (Japanese survivors of the 1945 atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki by the U.S. military), but also by survivors of Chernobyl, who have long been ostracized, and prevented from gaining employment, housing, and even marriage partners. (Dr. Robert Gale, quoted in the article, went to Moscow in the aftermath of Chernobyl to provide bone marrow transfusions for the firefighters stricken by radiation poisoning; he later authored the book Final Warning about his Chernobyl experiences.)

Nuclear Expert: ***ushima spent fuel has 85 times more cesium than released at Chernobyl — “It would destroy the world environment and our civilization… an issue of human survival” -Former UN adviser

[...] I asked top spent-fuel pools expert Mr. Robert Alvarez, former Senior Policy Adviser to the Secretary and Deputy Assistant Secretary for National Security and the Environment at the U.S. Department of Energy, for an explanation of the potential impact of the 11,421 rods.
I received an astounding response from Mr. Alvarez [updated 4/5/12]:
In recent times, more information about the spent fuel situation at the ***ushima-Dai-Ichi site has become known. It is my understanding that of the 1,532 spent fuel assemblies in reactor No. 304 assemblies are fresh and unirradiated. This then leaves 1,231 irradiated spent fuel rods in pool No. 4, which contain roughly 37 million curies (~1.4E+18 Becquerel) of long-lived radioactivity. The No.
In order to prevent severe radiation exposures, fires and possible explosions, it must be transferred at all times in water and heavily shielded structures into dry casks.. As this has never been done before, the removal of the spent fuel from the pools at the damaged ***ushima-Dai-Ichi reactors will require a major and time-consuming re-construction effort and will be charting in unknown waters. Despite the enormous destruction cased at the Da–Ichi site, dry casks holding a smaller amount of spent fuel appear to be unscathed.
Based on U.S. Energy Department data, assuming a total of 11,138 spent fuel assemblies are being stored at the Dai-Ichi site, nearly all, which is in pools. They contain roughly 336 million curies (~1.2 E+19 Bq) of long-lived radioactivity. About 134 million curies is Cesium-137 — roughly 85 times the amount of Cs-137 released at the Chernobyl accident as estimated by the U.S. National Council on Radiation Protection (NCRP). The total spent reactor fuel inventory at the ***ushima-Daichi site contains nearly half of the total amount of Cs-137 estimated by the NCRP to have been released by all atmospheric nuclear weapons testing, Chernobyl, and world-wide reprocessing plants (~270 million curies or ~9.9 E+18 Becquerel).
It is important for the public to understand that reactors that have been operating for decades, such as those at the ***ushima-Dai-Ichi site have generated some of the largest concentrations of radioactivity on the planet.
Many of our readers might find it difficult to appreciate the actual meaning of the figure, yet we can grasp what 85 times more Cesium-137 than the Chernobyl would mean. It would destroy the world environment and our civilization. This is not rocket science, nor does it connect to the pugilistic debate over nuclear power plants. This is an issue of human survival. ***ushima reactor 4 requires urgent intervention; coalition calls for emergency UN action to halt catastrophic release of radiation
Sunday, May 06, 2012
by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger
Editor of NaturalNews.com (See all articles...)
(NaturalNews) Kyoto, Japan -- On 30 April, seventy-two Japanese NGO organizations lead by Shut Tomari and Green Action send an urgent request to the UN and Japanese government urging immediate action to stabilize the ***ushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant Unit 4 spent nuclear fuel. The letter was endorsed by experts from Japan and abroad.
The letter warned that the seriously damaged Unit 4 spent nuclear fuel pool contains Cesium-137 (Cs-137) that is equivalent to 10 times the amount released at the time of the Chernobyl nuclear accident. If an earthquake or other event were to cause this pool to drain, this could result in a catastrophic radiological fire.
The letter urged the United Nations to organize a Nuclear Safety Summit to take up the crucial problem of the ***ushima Daiichi Unit 4 spent nuclear fuel pool. The letter stated that the United Nations should establish an independent assessment team on ***ushima Daiichi Unit 4 and coordinate international assistance in order to stabilize the unit's spent nuclear fuel and prevent radiological consequences with potentially catastrophic consequences.
Letters were sent to both UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda, the latter asking that Japan ask immediately for the UN's help.
Nearly all of the 10,893 spent fuel assemblies at the ***ushima Daiichi plant sit in pools vulnerable to future earthquakes, with roughly 85 times more long-lived radioactivity than released at Chernobyl.
Kaori Izumi of Shut Tomari stated, "***ushima Daiichi is no longer a Japanese issue but is an international issue. It is imperative for the Japanese government and the international community to work together on this crisis before it becomes too late."
Nuclear experts from the US and Japan such as Arnie Gundersen, Robert Alvarez, Hiroaki Koide, Masashi Goto, and Mitsuhei Murata, a former Japanese ambassador to Switzerland, and, Akio Matsumura, a former UN diplomat have continually warned against the high risk of the ***ushima Unit 4 spent nuclear fuel pool.
Shut Tomari and Green Action are seeking endorsements from civil organizations abroad (deadline 20 May). More Japanese civil organizations are expected to sign on in addition to the seventy-two organizations. (Deadline for signatures: 20 May.)

Harvey Wasserman has been writing about nuclear issues since the 1970s. In 1982 he and Norman Solomon co-authored an amazing book, KILLING OUR OWN; THE DISASTER OF AMERICA'S EXPERIENCE WITH NUCLEAR RADIATION. Dr Benjamin Spock wrote the introduction.
I'm proud to say Harvey is an acquaintance of mine.

The Final Collapse?
The Nuclear Industry Has Melted in Japan and France
by HARVEY WASSERMAN
There are zero commercial reactors operating in Japan today. On March 10, 2011, there were 54 licensed to operate, well over 10% percent of the global fleet.
But for the first time in 42 years, a country at the core of global reactor electricity is producing none of its own.
Worldwide, there are fewer than 400 operating reactors for the first time since Chernobyl, a quarter-century ago.
And France has replaced a vehemently pro-nuclear premier with the Socialist Francois Hollande, who will almost certainly build no new reactors. For decades France has been the “poster child” of atomic power. But Hollande is likely to follow the major shift in French national opinion away from nuclear power and toward the kind of green-powered transition now redefining German energy supply.
In the United States, a national grassroots movement to stop federal loan guarantees could end new nuclear construction altogether. New official cost estimates of $9.5 to $12 billion per reactor put the technology off-scale for any meaningful competition with renewables and efficiency.
In India, more than 500 women have joined an on-going hunger strike against construction of reactors at Koodankulam. And in China, more than 30 reactors hang in the balance of a full assessment of the true toll of the ***ushima disaster.
But it seems to have no end. Three melted cores still smolder. New reports from US Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR), confirm that at least one spent fuel pool suspended 100 feet in the air, bearing tons of hugely toxic rods, could crash to the ground with another strong earthquake—a virtual certainty by most calculations.
Those uncovered fuel rods contain radioactive cesium and other isotopes far beyond what was released at Chernobyl. A fire could render vast stretches of Japan permanently uninhabitable (if they are not already). The death toll could easily claim millions worldwide, including many of us here, where the cloud would come down within a week.
Japan’s total shut-down cuts to the core of the historic industry. The globe’s primary reactor designers, General Electric and Westinghouse, are now primarily Japanese-owned. Pressure vessels, steam generators and much more of the industry’s vital hardware have long been manufactured in Japan.
But the archipelago’s antinuclear movement also has deep roots. In 1975-6, large, angry crowds I spoke to were already demanding the end of ***ushima and other reactor projects. They warned that all Japanese reactors were vulnerable to earthquakes and tsunamis, and that disasters on par with what happened at ***ushima were essentially inevitable. Now that it’s happened, the public rage in what has been a traditionally conservative, authoritarian society is almost unfathomable.
Along the way, local governments did win the right (not enjoyed in the United States) to keep shut nearby reactors that were closed for repairs and refueling. On Saturday, May 5, a deep-rooted, highly focussed grassroots movement shut the archipelago’s last operating nuke. It’s bound and determined to keep them that way.
As summer air conditioning demand skyrockets, Japan’s Prime Minister will try to prove that atomic power is essential. But an efficiency-oriented public has dealt very well with cutbacks in supply since ***ushima. Each potential re-start will have its own dynamic.
Japan’s stunning reality is that its gargantuan capital investment in more than 50 commercial reactors is now dead in the water…. and being irradiated by its own deadly fallout. That can only drag the global industry closer to oblivion at a moment when the public’s financial and political commitments to renewables and efficiency are deepening daily.
Likewise the demise of Nikolas Sarkozy. His allies at France’s nuclear-commited utility, EDF, have been Europe’s primary pushers of the “Peaceful Atom.” Now his Socialist rival is running the country, backed by a constituency largely supportive of a green conversion to parallel the one in neighboring Germany.
America’s green activists also want atomic power ended. In Vermont, New Jersey, New York, Florida, Ohio, Texas and elsewhere, escalating grassroots campaigns have put the future of 104 licensed reactors in doubt. The confrontation may be most immediate at San Onofre, on the Pacific shore between Los Angeles and San Diego. Faulty steam generator tubes have forced two reactors shut. As in Japan, the industry loudly warns of shortages when summer hits. It wants at least one reactor back by June. But experts warn that San Onofre’s design deficiencies threaten the public safety, as does its uninsured vulnerability to earthquakes and tsunamis.
The battle parallels the one over new construction. Already plagued with faulty concrete and design-deficient rebar steel, two reactors at Georgia’s Vogtle still await final agreement on federal loan guarantees granted by President Obama last year. But Progress Energy’s guess that its own double-reactor proposal for Florida’s Levy County could cost a staggering $24 billion casts a long shadow over Vogtle, where tax/ratepayers are already being stuck with huge bills for a project that could be vastly underfunded. A national petition drive has been fired up to stop the guarantees from going through.
And while India’s growing non-violent army of nuclear opponents vow to fast to the death, the global reactor industry awaits word from China on how many new reactors it thinks it will build. The world will then watch with bated breath as the Middle Kingdom’s own nascent anti-nuclear movement gathers strength in the inevitable race to shut the local reactor before it melts.
But for now, this weekend’s message from Japan and France could not be more clear: at nuclear power’s historic core, the collapse has come. Humankind is running ever-faster toward a green-powered Earth, desperate to win before the next ***ushima strikes.

Somewhere in the distant cosmos two scientists types are observing human activity on planet earth. One turns to the other and says, "Well is it time to end this "**** a monkey" experiment down on planet earth before they destroy the whole planet.? "
NaturalNews) U.S. Senator Ron Wyden is, as far as Senators go, an honorable guy. I don't agree with all his politics, but I actually used to live in his district in Oregon when he was a congressman (1981 - 1996), and I remember him standing out as someone who genuinely seemed to care about the People.
To my knowledge, Sen. Wyden is the only U.S. Senator who has actually visited the ***ushima Daiichi nuclear power facility and warned the U.S. public about what he saw. And what did he see? A wrecked, half-collapsed building site littered with massive collections of nuclear fuel rods that now threaten the entire Northern hemisphere with a radiation apocalypse. (http://www.naturalnews.com/035789_***ushima_Cesium-137_Plume-Gate.htm...)
When Wyden returned to the USA following the visit, he immediately issued an urgent warning, now reprinted on his website. In the watered-down language of political correctness, the warning is still quite strong. As his website says: (http://www.wyden.senate.gov/news/press-releases/after-tour-of-***ushi...)
Wyden's principal concern is the relocation of spent fuel rods currently being stored in unsound structures immediately adjacent to the ocean. He strongly urged the Ambassador to accept international help to prevent dangerous nuclear material from being released into the environment.
He then went on to say, in his own words: (emphasis added)
"The scope of damage to the plants and to the surrounding area was far beyond what I expected and the scope of the challenges to the utility owner, the government of Japan, and to the people of the region are daunting. The precarious status of the ***ushima Daiichi nuclear units and the risk presented by the enormous inventory of radioactive materials and spent fuel in the event of further earthquake threats should be of concern to all and a focus of greater international support and assistance."
His website goes on to say something that should stun anyone who understands the threat of radioactive contamination of the environment:
"Wyden found that the facilities designed to house spent nuclear fuel and the reactors themselves were still in a state of disrepair and located in areas that would make them susceptible to further damage from future seismic events. The reactor buildings still contain large amounts of spent fuel -- making them a huge safety risk and the only protection from a future tsunami, Wyden observed, is a small, makeshift sea wall erected out of bags of rock."
Did you catch that last part? The only protection from a tsunami is a "makeshift sea wall erected out of bags or rock."
And to think, the fate of the world now depends on us all just "lucking out" and crossing our fingers in the hope that no earthquake or tsunami takes place before they clean up the ***ushima facility mess.
Which brings up the question: What exactly is being done to clean up the ***ushima facility mess?
In a word, nothing.
Governments play pretend
Virtually nothing is happening. All the governments involved (Japan and USA, primarily) are playing a ridiculously stupid game of pretending there is no problem. The Japanese government, for its part, has decided that instead of admitted to a radiation problem, it's easier to just tell Japanese citizens they have a mental disorder if they're concerned about radiation (http://www.prisonplanet.com/fear-of-radiation-treated-as-psychiatric-...).
The U.S. government plays a similar mind game, raising the allowable levels of radiation exposure by thousands of times and then declaring ***ushima fallout to be suddenly safe! (http://www.naturalnews.com/031963_radiation_exposure.html)
Governments, in other words, are in denial mode even while ***ushima smolders and hurls us all toward irreversible global disaster.
If ***ushima were a "terrorist," the U.S. government would stop at nothing to defeat it
What's really telling in all this is that if a "terrorist" organization were threatening the USA with the same amount of nuclear material held at ***ushima, the U.S. would take immediate and decisive action to eliminate that threat. For the record, the ***ushima Daiichi nuclear facility has enough radioactive material to make thousands of terrorist "dirty bombs".
All that radioactive material now threatens America, but because it is subjected to random "natural" causes (earthquakes, tsunamis, etc.) instead of "terrorist" causes, the U.S. government has stupidly chosen to ignore it. It's not politically advantageous to talk about ***ushima, you see, because it doesn't fit into the false theatrical narrative of terrorists threatening America.
This leaves us all in a frustratingly idiotic catch-22, where governments refuse to address a problem that threatens the world unless and until the problem explodes in their faces, at which point it is too late to address it.
All this leads to the obvious solution for resolving the ***ushima conundrum. The way to get governments to address ***ushima is to allow the facility to be taken over by terrorists! Only then will the U.S. government consider the threat to be real, since the entire government only sees things through "terrorist glasses."
The science of denial
Of course, the real source of all this terror is the arrogance of modern science itself, which now threatens the very survival of the human race. As I recently wrote here on NaturalNews, the human race is being "suicided" in the name of science. (http://www.naturalnews.com/035790_scientific_suicide_humans.html)
Science has become a far greater threat than terrorism could ever imagine, because in the name of "science," we have been placed in the crosshairs of not just a nuclear apocalypse, but also the disastrous effects of self-replicating genetic pollution via GMOs.
"Science" has handed us antibiotic-resistant superbugs, the global pollution of crops and soils with synthetic pesticides, the death of the honey bees, and the mass poisoning of children with mercury through dentistry and vaccines (among other crimes). "Science" told us that nuclear power was safe ... yet here we are in 2012, on the verge of an event that could kill a quarter of the human population on the planet, and all the scientists can do is deny any problem exists at all.
Denial may be an effective psychological tactic in politics and poker, but unfortunately for the rest of us it does not alter the laws of physics. "Denial" does not change the 30-year half life of Cesium-137, a radioactive isotope that mimics the mineral potassium and thus is easily absorbed into food crops, poisoning the entire food supply.
Denial is not a tactic of genuine leaders; it is a last-ditch desperate ploy of the weak-minded.
We are living in the land of denial, led by elected denialists who are voted into office by working-class denialists. Denial has become our modus operandi, our fabric of fairytales. It has allowed our civilization to ride high on a global debt pyramid and it will be the harbinger of our ultimate destruction at the hands of "scientists" who promised us life but delivered us unto death.
