What is Driving the Middle Class Out of California?
Written on April 21, 2012 by V2A,
‘California is God’s best moment,” says Joel Kotkin. “It’s the best place in the world to live.” Or at least it used to be.
Mr. Kotkin, one of the nation’s premier demographers, left his native New York City in 1971 to enroll at the University of California, Berkeley. The state was a far-out paradise for hipsters who had grown up listening to the Mamas & the Papas’ iconic “California Dreamin’” and the Beach Boys’ “California Girls.” But it also attracted young, ambitious people “who had a lot of dreams, wanted to build big companies.” Think Intel, Apple and Hewlett-Packard.
Now, however, the Golden State’s fastest-growing entity is government and its biggest product is red tape. The first thing that comes to many American minds when you mention California isn’t Hollywood or tanned girls on a beach, but Greece. Many progressives in California take that as a compliment since Greeks are ostensibly happier. But as Mr. Kotkin notes, Californians are increasingly pursuing happiness elsewhere.

It's just so expensive for both people and companies. So as companies leave people follow. As people leave companies follow. Then for everyone that leaves 10 illegals flood over and sap services.

I takes ten illegal families to pay the rent on one productive tax paying legal that exits the state..
Hell I saw what was coming back in 88 moved to a state that has ZERO state income tax..
Took a healthy cut in pay and with the lower cost of living here and made out like a bandit..
Own two homes, 3 cars outright and retired a few years early because I can afford to..

One-way U-haul rates are a quick way to gauge real and current migration. The demand for trucks leaving California is higher than the demand for trucks coming in. Californians that can't live on the coast might as well move to a cheaper state.

Call it what you like..
But happiness is what I am..
I worked hard for what I have, was never given anything from the government and am now enjoying the fruits of that labor.. I figured out many years ago that the land of fruits and nuts was going down the toilet unloaded my "Overpriced" house in the valley and took my profits east..
your commentary sounds to me like jealousy on your part..

I have a hunch that the headline below will confirm your unsubstantiated post but everything beyond the headline and in the article will fly over your head so you can remain willfully ignorant.

Report: California slips to world's 9th largest economy
(http://news.blogs.cnn.com/2012/01/13/report-california-slips-to-worlds-9th-largest-economy/)
January 13th, 2012
California has long had an economy larger than most nations, but nominal growth has once again seen it slip on the top 10 list.
The state dropped to ninth on the list of world’s largest economies as measured by gross domestic product in 2010, according to a report this month from the Center for Continuing Study of the California Economy.
Brazil, with a 2010 GDP of $2.1 trillion, took the eighth spot from California ($1.901 trillion). India was 10th, at $1.7 trillion.
The United States, including California, was top of the list at $14.5 trillion. China ($5.9 trillion), Japan ($5.5 trillion), Germany ($3.3 trillion) and France ($2.6 trillion) rounded out the top five.
The United Kingdom ($2.2 trillion) and Italy ($2.1 trillion) were sixth and seventh, respectively.
In the early 2000s, California was fifth in terms of GDP, which is the value of its goods and services. But slow growth – 1.7% annually since 2000, adjusted for inflation – has helped faster-growing countries catch up.
The U.S. annual growth rate of 1.6% during that period was slightly lower than California’s.
Stephen Levy, Center for Continuing Study of the California Economy director and senior economist, said the California-Brazil swap is more about Brazil rising than California falling. Brazil’s vast population advantage (190 million to California’s 37 million) and the increasing prices of commodities that Brazil exports are just part of the country’s rise, he said.
“There’s a number of countries that are embracing the technology that … has (been) developed, and they’re in a growth mode,” Levy said. "Exports and rising prices, yes, but generally they’re having great economic gains.”
Levy said California’s economy could soon surpass Italy’s, because of a recession in Italy and a falling euro.
California’s economy is the largest of the 50 states. Texas ($1.207 trillion) and New York ($1.16 trillion) are next.
California’s 2010 GDP is a U.S. Department of Commerce estimate. The nations’ GDP figures come from the World Bank.

It acutally costs more, not less, to live in a state without a state income tax because they take it out in so many other forms. Of course in Texas, we don't bother ourselves much with quality of life indicators like child healthcare or education, environmental cleanup, fixing roads etc...that's for the commies in other states to worry about...that helps stretch the old retirement dollar.

Here's the funny thing: California would do better if they seceded from the U.S. and formed their own country.

LOL you sound like a 6 year old that needs affirmation after having received his partication trophy. Hilarious!
After reading your post again I get another sense of why you sound like a selfish 6 year old. You basically sucked off the state, benefitting from what it had to offer than ran like a coward when the going got tough. No effort to make a difference, make a contribution and fight for a state worth fighting for. Typical right wing "I have mine so F the rest of you attitude". You are in fact a shining example of everything wrong with this country.

I think to answer your question, my response would be -- common sense. If they punish the earners and those that create jobs, why would one want to stick around?

It's true that every state would do better if given more rights. It would be easier for the people to have an influence on state governments. None of the states would be better at defense, but they can handle everything else.
