View Full Version : Far From Burfict

Mike Mayock now rates LB Vontaze Burfict as undraftable. Says the tapes don't lie, he can't play.

Wow, was rated early on as a 1st round pick.

“I put his tape on with absolutely zero preconceived notions,” Mayock explained in a Thursday conference call with media. “I watched three tapes and really didn’t like him as a football player.

“I think he’s a non-draftable kid. For me, he’s a free agent.”

He's got Oakland Raiders written all over him.

Burfict literally gives up in pass coverage, and is WAY to much of a liability in today's heavy disciplined NFL.

Toss in the concussion lawsuit, severe coachability issues, and a forty barely registering in the 4.8's...

...and you got yourself just another unemployed ex-football player.

Okay, I'm as against Burfict as the next guy, but...really? I mean really? Mayock, a guy who gets paid to evaluate talent and give his opinion on it, had "absolutely zero" preconceived notions about a guy who was rated as a first or second rounder as recently as this fall?

I won't be surprised if the broncos take Burfict late in the draft if Del Rio thinks he can make him a player. Del Rio can convince the broncos as a former LB and players coach, he'll be able to get the best out of Burfict.

I was thinking the same thing... I don't understand a player can go from a 1st round talent to 'un-draftable'... If Burfict is still on the board in the later rounds I would not be surprised if the Broncos draft him.

When he was a "1st rounder" that was based purely on his stats and nothing else, as soon as people started putting on the game tape and saw his poor technique and attitude he dropped to a mid rounder, his poor workouts, poor work ethic, throwing his coaches under the bus and lack of responsibility for his short comings have dropped him out of the draft.

This is what happens when people take those early worthless draft rankings seriously.

He did awful at combine and pro days. His interviews were awful too blaming coaches for wgy he sucked even though they benches him late last season. I think he goes undrafted. I watched ASU for years. He did look good as a freshman but that was gis best year and hr regressed. Only reason he is talked about are his big hits that's all he has.

I would take a chance on Burfict in the 7th round, maybe even 6th. Most there don't make it anyway and who knows, maybe the chip on his shoulder from being drafted so low would motivate him to become a good player.

Why waste the time. He is slow and his awareness in space in zone coverage is bad. He misses a lot of tackles going for home run and not being disciplined. Pass

When you think about it, it's really not that much different than scoring poorly on the wonderlic test when your agent has most likely given you the test beforehand. Ryan Clady's 13 sticks out in my mind here.

Agree.

Also we have to remember, they're kids. They are, for the most part, under-educated kids who have a very special skill-set. The reason I wrote "surprise!" wasn't because it was Burfict (although come on, that wasn't much of a surprise), it's because stuff like this always comes out right about now. 6 months from now a few more names will be released which we'll all nod our heads at and go "so THAT's why the guy dropped so far."

Happens every year. Kids do stupid stuff and it affects their career. Hell, when I was 22, I quit a well-paying job with great future potential because of a petty screaming match with my boss. We all do dumb stuff, and we pay for it. Wooooooorld keeps on spinnin!

I still think the guy's in the box instincts are good. I think Del Rio could find specific packages to use him. I think he could be an excellent special teams thumper too. So he's a head case. Charles Haley used to jack off in front of teammates. Take a flier on him in the 5th or 6th round. The minute he becomes a distraction you cut his ass. Which is what pretty much happens to every 5th or 6th rounder not named TD.
