Benjamin Franklin. His love of science was respected (and infectious!) among the founding fathers, which nourished a culture that attracted foreign lovers of science: Alexander Graham Bell, Tesla, Zworykin, Einstein and so on.

Frederick Douglass. "I would unite with anybody to do right and with nobody to do wrong."

Franklin Delano Roosevelt. If I'm going to list a president, I'll name the best.

Rachel Carson. She'll top more lists as our world gets hotter.

Thomas Paine. Progressive taxation, animal welfare, women's rights, free eduction, social security, etc. The original liberal. "Government and the people do not in America constitute distinct bodies"

Harriet Tubman gettin' no love.

I just googled Frederick Douglass vs Harriet Tubman, expecting to see an epic rap battle or something to help me decide who deserves my top 5, but instead found this:

Harriet asked Douglass to pen the forward to an early biography of hers. Here was his letter in response,

You ask for what you do not need when you call upon me for a word of commendation. I need such words from you far more than you can need them from me, especially where your superior labors and devotion to the cause of the lately enslaved of our land are known as I know them. The difference between us is very marked. Most that I have done and suffered in the service of our cause has been in public, and I have received much encouragement at every step of the way. You, on the other hand, have labored in a private way. I have wrought in the day -- you in the night. The midnight sky and the silent stars have been the witnesses of your devotion to freedom and of your heroism. Excepting John Brown -- of sacred memory -- I know of no one who has willingly encountered more perils and hardships to serve our enslaved people than you have.

Good news, with McCain and now Romney leading the Republican ticket, it is up to liberals and progressives not to fück this up for the foreseeable future and push and pull the pendulum back from its conservative lurch that started with Reagan.
