University of Arkansas puts Bobby Petrino on leave

Arkansas put football coach Bobby Petrino on paid leave Thursday after he failed to disclose he had been riding with a female employee half his age when his motorcycle skidded off the road over the weekend -- an accident that prompted him to apologize for that and for what he described as a "previous inappropriate relationship."

Athletic director Jeff Long announced the decision and said he had no timeline in determining Petrino's future with the Razorbacks.

Long said he was disappointed that he didn't hear about the passenger -- former Arkansas volleyball player and current Razorback Foundation fundraiser Jessica Dorrell -- until a police report was released Thursday.

Petrino, who is married with four children, didn't mention he had a passenger during a news conference on Tuesday, two days after Sunday's accident, and a school statement that day quoted Petrino's family as saying "no other individuals" were involved.

He added: "I will fully cooperate with the university throughout this process and my hope is to repair my relationships with my family, my athletic director, the Razorback Nation and remain the head coach of the Razorbacks."
Dorrell, who did not return a call seeking comment, was hired March 28 by Petrino as the student-athlete development coordinator. She is in charge of organizing the recruiting process for the football team, including initial eligibility for each incoming player.

Long said he had not decided whether to suspend Dorrell.

While I don't suspect that infidelity will be seen by the university as a fireable offense (at least when the coach wins a lot of games), the whole thing where she got hired 1 week ago...if you assume the relationship was going on previous to that and if he was involved in getting her hired, that looks even worse.

Gotta hand it to Petrino - he's managed to come across as a POS every place he's gone, BUT in completely different ways each time!

Actually, there is apparently broad language in Petrino's contract that the university can terminate him for conduct the university deems improper or reflects poorly...or something to that effect. I saw an article on it.

That said, I don't think the university currently has the political capital to do it, since he's been too successful recently.

ThisLOL! I've been supportive of the Falcons off and on during the 17 years my wife and I have lived here in Atlanta. I was happy for Dan Reeves and the success he was able to bring to their team, but between Mike Vick....then the hiring of Bobby P. They lost me. One of the biggest D-bags in coaching, ever....at any level. Texting in his resignation before the season even ended and quiting on his team, pussy. Arkansas got exactly what they deserved on this one. Falcon fans deserve Mike Smith and Matt Ryan after the crap Vick and Petrino put them through.

You know what they say about opinions, right?

Sorry, couldn't let this one pass. Obviously you did quite a bit of "driving" those motorbikes of your's as a "kid". Eh? Course anyone who actually spends any time on them at all refers to it as "Riding". Bet you even had someone teach you the proper way to "Drive" one and donned the proper protective gear (you know, $10 helmet for that $10 head of yours). Sorry, but as a 45 year old "moron" with over 350,000 street miles, and close to 30 years riding under my ass (at least I'm not "thinking with my penis"), I thank you for reaffirming the ignorance of most folks when it comes to Motorcycles and Motorcyclist. To say you are less disturbed that a married father of 4 is "banging a younger woman" than riding a motorcycle? Wow...just wow. Could it be that because you weren't any good at it and it scared the crap out of you, you now resent anyone else who does it? Or are you just one of those "Safety Nazi" types, or maybe just a bitter old F who might need to lighten up a bit? Sorry for the off topic rant folks. I know it won't change a thing, but that stance just pisses me off.

I think there's multiple reasons for Arkansas to viably fire Petrino. 1, he flat out lied and the Arkansas PR people look stupid for it. 2. He just hired this bimbo who is engaged to another man and they have a relationship which they are hiding. 3. Petrino's past where he lied about contact with other college programs while working at Louisville.

He's a great coach, a great coach. But he's an idiot in his personal decisions.

If I was Arkansas, I'd dump the blond bimbo before I dump Petrino. Fact is, she's reponsible for her actions and it's a sham she's posting engagement crap on the interwebz while having a sexual relationship with the ole football coach.

If I was her fiance, I'd be tearing down that site faster than Bobby can crash a motorbike.

Yes, but he does have a 700K buy out clause which is peanuts at Arkansas but it would be a crappy thing to do to Arkansas State. He was the hottest assistant coach on the market until someone posted some crazy video of his wife at a church rally. I haven't seen it, I think it got pulled from the internet. yeah, you notice men's penis loses its ability to get an erection and they invent a blue pill. How's about we get a pill so we can continue to use our vibrators without the use of lubricant at middle age. I'd say it would be so we could lay our middle aged retarded men, but to be honest at pretty much any age men are not really that good at giving women orgasms without very specific direction and as we all know men don't ask for directions in any circumstance.

As for the actual thing, both of them should be fired. She, because she got the job because he wanted his girlfriend around rather than on merit and he because he is using his job and influence inappropriately to hire his bimbo. And I hope her fiancee dumps her and Petrino's wife takes him to the cleaners.

What a cliche this dude is...

Yes I know the difference between riding and driving..

had about 100k on my Triumph 650 when I saw my best riding buddy get clipped by a wide mirror on a car towing a trailer, he skidded about 100 yards on raw pavement.. Bike was totaled and he was in the hospital for 6 months.. the skin grafts never did make him right..

as for others riding bikes with the experiences I have had I think it is stupid..

but if you do well be prepared for that inevitable crash that puts you in the hospital of grave..

Most bikers think it will never happen because they are skilled riders (as I was).. It only takes one moron in a car that does not see you to even out the odds..

I for one am always vigilant while driving hoping that I will not blink and miss one coming out of a blind spot..

Fair enough. Now a couple of questions from my end.
1.) How did your friend get clipped by that mirror? If it was oncoming, what was he doing crowding the centerline that closely?
2.) If he skidded 100 yards, how fast was he going?
3.) Sorry to hear about the grafts, that sucks...been there. However, what kind of gear was he wearing? I don't see grafts needed in a 100 yard slide if he was wearing full leathers (perforated is fine for the street) like you should....always. Period. No exception. If it is "too hot" for leathers, stay home or take the cage. Same goes for the race gloves and boots, and is a no brainer for the full face QUALITY helmet. Again, if you have a $10 head buy a $10 helmet.

Your opinion is your's and is valid for you. I still believe your stance that the fact he was on a bike was a more severe lack in judgement than cheating on his wife and kids is an F'ed up worldview, but hey-to each his own.

As an MSF (Motorcycle Safety Foundation) instructor for 20 years (started in the Marines as a military instructor) I can attest that 80-90% of riders on the road do NOT qualify as "skilled" riders. The percentage of motorcyclists that have actually taken any formalized motorcycle riding training is pathetically low. I also know the old adage of "there are two types of motorcyclists, those that have been involved in a crash....and those who will". While there is an element of truth to that statement, there is also an implication that the event will ALWAYS be of the magnitude that your friend experienced. That is simply untrue. Much of what the MSF course teaches is spatial awareness in conjuction with instinctive control of your motorcycle. You can mitigate the risks through education, experience, and forcing yourself to learn your bike outside of your comfort zone (track days are invaluable for this). Again, it isn't going to make you bullet (car) proof, but it will give you a much better chance to react correctly to a panic situation. I have wrecked, more than once...however, my training and experience have enabled me to walk away with minimal damage to myself due to proper equipment and never overextending the safety parameters of street riding. Always ride with one thought in your head, "They are all trying to kill me". Never target fixate, nor allow yourself to become a "hole" in traffic, and remember that in most cases the gas is your friend and the brakes are the enemy (all a bike on the brakes wants to do is stand up and go strait, simple physics). I've lost friends to riding accidents, both involving other vehicles, and on their own. At the end of the day it is about choice and risk. I'll leave it to Hunter S. Thompson-“Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!”

By the way, I'm a Triumph guy myself. '99 Sprint St 955i and an '07 Daytona 675 (track bike). Former CCS and WERA race license holder as well.

Early 70's was a time that leathers and helmets were for pussies.. it was Levi's jeans and jean jacket.. not much protection from road rash..

actually he was clipped while the car passed him.. It was a huge outrigger mirror..

he was doing the speed limit at the time.. the other guy was driving a huge motor type car..

I think what you are doing is fine..

but for most riding a bike is nuts because there are not smart enough to do so..

I think what you are doing is fine..

but for most riding a bike is nuts because there are not smart enough to do so..

as for this clown seems to me he was thinking with his penis..

I've logged over a half-million miles on a motorcycle since I was 14, I started out on a harley sprint 250 and now ride a Harley road king with all types in between. Yes it is dangerous and yes I have had some close calls over the years but that’s also part of the thrill attached to riding. For some it's sky-diving, bungee jumping, rock climbing or riding a mountain bike. I think once you doubt yourself or your abilities it's time to stop and find something else to do. I know a guy that got hit in the back of the head with a golf ball that darn near killed him but he still plays golf ............ like they say, “unless you’re the lead dog the view never changes”.

I had a feeling that the '70s was probably the time period we were referring to, simply due to the Triumph 650. Not many of those running around today, and most that have survived are spending life as "trailer queens" or collection members. I get where you are coming from. Just hit a nerve with me as I hear quite a few of those comments from folks who either never threw a leg over a bike, or tried it for a short time without proper instruction and gave up on it due to a bad experience. Today's bikes are soooo much more advanced and safer in every way. There really is no comparison. But at the end of the day, it still comes down to the rider and their experience/focus/skill level. As for the idiots out there, we write that off to Darwinism. If they don't get thinned out of the herd doing this, they will get thinned out doing something else. Just wish those types would do so partaking in another activity and not adding to the negative perception of motorcycling.

as for this clown seems to me he was thinking with his penis..

Agreed. Dude is a pretty selfish asshole based on most of his very public decisions.

i feel for the fiance but Arkansas is not gonna fire him. they had one of the best seasons in recent memory for the school and outside of Malzahn(who has wife not keeping her mouth shut issues)there isn't a legit replacement for him.

besides, this is the norm for old guys with power and money, you get a cute young chick and have her on your job or whatever it may be so she's close.
if i was the fiance she'd be gone faster than a cockroach squished under a shoe though.

Why would a mod let you put this crap on as an avatar and tagline when we all know you are a ****ing loser Raider fan? Your avatar screams "Hey, I am a Broncos fan!" Too bad your previous posts scream, "I can't spell or predict ****. I am a Faiders fan and too dumb to be silent". If Mods do their job, faking racism shouldn't be tolerated. Very good advice. Even though I have the BMW R65 as my avatar, I prefer a bigger-displacement bike for street riding, 1000 CC or more. Why? Because the acceleration when you're in top gear can get you out of trouble.

The R65 was a nice bike because it could go off-road just fine, BMW used to run them in the Paris-Dakar rally. Loved that bike. Those BMW boxers are superb handlers.

There's always a good coach somewhere, it's a matter of finding that coach. The Nick Saban's of the world were once young and unknown too. Maybe they have a young assistant who will pick up where Petrino left off?

The thing about Petrino is that I don't think he would have gone anywhere because he has the pre-existing reputation for being a weasel. The only way he'd look for another job is if he won a championship. He's an excellent coach, I'll give him that. He's just a classic douchebag who ends up sschitting in his own bed.

Sorry Tombstone, but nope. I don't think that the job sucked at all. In fact Mike Smith seems to have done a fine job in unFing things for the Falcons since he took over for the POS. I'm not a big fan of Peter King, but:

2. I think the Atlanta Falcons aren't surprised about the mess Bobby Petrino has himself in at the University of Arkansas. That's harsh, but just in case you don't remember clearly what happened four and a half years ago with the Falcons, here goes. He signed a five-year, $24 million contract to coach the team in January 2007. Then Michael Vick had his dogfighting scandal and was gone from the team, sentenced to prison late in the season, and Petrino, after 13 games of his first season, left the Falcons on a Monday with three games left in the season. To this day, it's the most immature, classless thing I've seen a coach do in 28 years covering the NFL. He left his assistant coaches in the lurch, and his players, and the owner who hired him, Arthur Blank. In each player's locker when they reported for work the day after he left for Arkansas, Petrino left this note: "Atlanta Falcons players: Out of my respect for you, I am letting you know that, with a heavy heart, I resigned today as head coach of the Atlanta Falcons. This decision was not easy, but it was made in the best interest of me and my family. While my desire would have been to finish out what has been a difficult season for us all, circumstances did not allow me to do so. I appreciate your hard work and wish you the best. Sincerely, Bobby Petrino.''

3. I think these are the Petrino words that ring the hollowest: Out of my respect for you. In other words, if I may paraphrase, Out of my respect for you, I am walking away from a valid five-year contract after 11 months, in the middle of a season no less, because the task is hard and I found a sap university that would pay me a sick amount of money. And now that sap university is living with the consequences of handing control and nearly $3 million a year to a married father of four who rides a motorcycle around town -- helmetless -- with an engaged 25-year-old university employee he admits having an inappropriate relationship with. What a tangled web he weaves.

I feel bad about the players he recruited, now they play under a lesser talented coach..or switch schools..

Arkansas will be fine. It's the SEC. Houston Nutt turned down $5 million from Nebraska to stay in Arkansas.

Razorback athletic director Jeff Long said that Dorrell's relationship with Petrino had given her an unfair advantage in being hired over the other 158 applicants for her current position. Long also revealed that Petrino had given Dorrell a $20,000 cash gift, though he declined to say why Petrino had done so.

Ya, this pretty much made it a open and closed case for me. Cheating and lying about it at his level of visibility is bad but manageable considering his record. Doing it with someone who is on his staff.... hehe, who got the job for questionable reasons opens the university to a whole slew of potential legal issues. Not to mention he tried to cover it up to his boss. Sorry but he had to go.

I could care less about Atlanta. Petrino was coaching millionaire professionals with a multi-millionaire owner. Petrino had to coach Captain Dog Killa while he was there... anyone think that maybe, just maybe that job sucked?

Nothing like protecting a total douche of a guy..But keep using the great coaching angle while he is a complete ahole in every other aspect to give us the negative about others. BTW, you think Joe Pa should have kept his coaching job while knowing about child molester?

I'm a U of A faculty member. If they hire Butch Davis then they prove they don't really care about character. I'd be disappointed.

For those of you who think that BP was fired because he nailed a 25 year old semi-hottie, you've got it wrong.

He was fired because he circumvented the hiring process and gave her a 50K+ a year job over 158 other candidates, many of which were undoubtedly more qualified. Ironically and totally hypocritically, we can overlook these things when we hire a head coach, but you do that anywhere else on campus and you are in deep crap.

Everything else probably could've been forgiven. When I heard that come out of the AD's mouth yesterday though, I knew he was dead meat.

Fortunately, BP left us in a great position to hire somebody good even though the timing sucks. This returning team is excellent and the schedule is set up to bring the only two teams that beat the Hogs last year, LSU and Bama, to Fayetteville this year.

Surely somebody will recognize they can pull a Gene Chizek (or however you spell his name) here at UA.

At least I hope so.

@Ryan_Mallett_15 Who's Gus malzhan? I'm talkin about Garrick McGee. He can win at Arkansas

John Daly has his sights set higher:

@pga_johndaly My first loyalty is to the University of Arkansas. I trust that Jeff Long will do what's best for the program. Everyone in the Razorback Nation is devastated! This is heartbreaking as Coach Petrino is a very good friend of mine! From here, I think we will need a great coach like him to continue our winning ways! I myself, would hold out for a great NFL coach---GRUDEN! #GoHogs

I'm not saying Petrino didn't deserve to be fired, just surprised that Arkansas actually did it. He went 11-2 last year. You go 11-2 in the SEC, the Governor issues you a pardon for murder in advance.

No, I asked Sandusky as a separate question. Your love for football over ethics brought me to that conclusion. You would rather look down on aholes like Vick to give the excuse of a total quitter in Petrino. He didn't even finish the job that he obviously sucked at in doing. You make excuses for him in your post. My question is why? He is a complete turd but a good football coach. He has no spine yet you look at football only. Now who is the jackass?

Melder, 26, graduated from Arkansas-Little Rock with a degree in political science and has worked with the Young Republicans as well as the state GOP...She also lists herself as winner of the 2008 Miss Bikini USA and Miss Motorcycle Mania competitions.

...

Melder's phone number is now disconnected, but in September, October, and November, she and Petrino exchanged at least 200 messages (we're still counting), at all hours of the day. There were no phone calls. The messages begin appearing on Sept. 12, the first day for which phone records are available. They continue until Nov. 6.

Oh, so you have a link stating all of this? What if the Falons were 10-3 at the same time? I link Petrino as a scumbag with all things added up. Just because he is winning now doesn't change the facts. I can see this from the outside looking in since I have no connections to the NFC South/East Coast or SEC.

I don't think everyone that thinks he should have been canned makes it a "hard on". JHNS describing past McDaniels' fans is considered a hard on.
Fact remains, he should have been fired and Tombstone making excuses for the guy shows who has the real hard on for Petrino. The "look at the other guys" is not a defense for Petrino. Maybe Arkansas has higher standards. That is nothing, nor should it, to feel bad about your support for the school.

I would never compare ND to Miami as they don't have the academic nor history as ND.
