Anybody remember his 12 tackle performance against the Niners? He was also a candidate to return punts. Which Broncos rookie brought you the most excitement with his play in preseason? Elway? Miller? Mobley?

Terrell Davis, obviously.

Clinton Portis was another for me.

TD's tackle on a kickoff.

Yeah that was huge, but I don't think anyone could even fathom what TD ended up being capable of at that point.

I agree with TJ, I think it was Portis...we had all seen him at Miami, and he was taken high enough in the draft that we could expect an immediate impact out of him.

Portis went 48-224-4.7-2 in the preseason. Behind an already proven line and blocking scheme, I think everyone at that point was excited to go into the season with him.

First practice, Portis went into the huddle with the first team even though he was third on the depth chart.

Portis was a beast.

Still would make the trade any day of the week though.

Yeah.

It's one of those things...it's like I'm so glad I married my wife, but...remember that hot piece of ass I had for a time about 15 years back?

Portis was fun to watch. He could take it to the house any play. He could have put up video game numbers...

Vance Johnson's rookie year in 1985 preseason against the Rams he had I believe 180 yards receiving in the 1st half. Peyton loves those small quick WRs it would be awesome if we had a WR like The Vance.

Didn't Spencer Larsen get a couple TD like special teams licks in durring his rookie preseason?

Help my memory on this one...
There was a great punter battle one preseason involving Brett Kern, but can't remember if the other guy was Sam Paulescu or Britton Colquitt. I just remember both guys were nailing their punts. They were both pinning them inside the 10 too. And if I recall correctly one of them turned a botched snap into a first down and the other guy made a highlight reel type tackle to save a return.

I was pretty excited about nabbing Javon Walker going into 2006. Just went to the AFC Championship the year before... then everything hit the fan.

Alright, not a rookie, but kinda the same concept. I thought about talking about Lelie, but it was too painful.

Not only that but the thread is about preseason performance, not hype. Maybe that is what you were hinting at but I don't recall Walker setting the world on fire in preseason.

Atwater blowing a lot of people up in preseason games, I wish I could remember better but absolutely destroyed somebody in a goal line situation and I remember thinking, hmmm, we might be on to something here.

Yeah. He got fined for turning Gino Torretta into mush. I think people forget how good Mobley was before he blew out his knee.

Good one, I remember all the hype on him. Overcame that wrist or hand problem, for awhile anyway.

Seeing Von being able to team up with Doom to rush the passer in that pre-season game in Seattle was great

that showed me were going to have something special for years to come in an area we have lacked in prior years.

I don't really understand all the people dropping Davis' name in this thread. Yeah, he popped the guy and burst onto the scene, but I don't ever remember anybody talking about him during preseason like he was going to be the future of the Denver running game or rack up MVPs, much less even make the Pro Bowl. Maybe that's just me.

Davis entered training camp as the sixth string tailback and was a long shot to even make the team. He managed to impress the Broncos coaching staff after his second pre-season game, most notably with a crushing hit as a member of special teams. Davis kept improving with each pre-season game and was promoted to starting running back for the season's opening game.

I just remember seeing the hit and wanting the guy to get a shot as our rb. The reason you probably didnt hear much about him was because of the internet is much more advanced. I remember spending hours trying to get on the internet and then also waiting forever for a porn picture to appear:) It was like watching a stripper slowly undressing.

Exactly. TD was a nobody at that time, and when he made that one tackle on special teams, it wasn't a huge deal. In retrospect, everyone likes to think of that as his defining moment or something like that, but I'd be willing to bet if you polled people at the end of that preseason, they wouldn't even have been able to tell you who made the tackle.

TD was a great story, it turned out, and NFL Films and ESPN talked a lot about that play after TD was already a known commodity a few years later. TD wasn't a preseason hype machine.

LOL... give me a break. He made a great special teams tackle so you were like: "Oh man, give that kid 35 carries a game!"

With the crap we had running back. Yeah! No, not 35 carries I just wanted him to get a chance to run the ball. Theres a reason he started for us the first game.

I started liking Rod Smith when he caught his first pass. You know the hail mary on the last play to win the game against the redskins. I also disliked him the year he had the dropsies. Its funny to you people liking a player means we predicted he was going to be some hall of famer so you guys get your panties in a bunch.
