View Full Version : Wild West once again: Star QBs stock Denver Broncos' division

Maybe the AFC West is not quite all the way back to the days of the Mad Bomber, Air Coryell and the Duke. But a quick look around the division and quarterback has once again become a position of pride.

"When you look at our division, in the last couple of years, we've got some of the best quarterback play in all of football with Philip Rivers, Carson Palmer and now Peyton Manning," new Oakland Raiders coach Dennis Allen said Tuesday at the NFL meetings.

Allen is the AFC West's neophyte head coach. His roots are burrowed on defense, most notably as the Broncos' defensive coordinator last season.

No assistant coach ever passes up a head coaching job, but the Broncos aren't making it easy for Allen to break in. Last week, the Broncos signed Peyton Manning to a five-year contract worth $96 million. The only four-time MVP in NFL history, Manning ranks No. 3 all time in touchdown passes (399), yards passing (54,828) and completions (4,682).

"I have mixed emotions because after just leaving those guys, I've got a lot of friends on that staff," Allen said of the Broncos. "You want them to do well. At the same time they're in our division, they're one of our biggest rivalries and you'd rather not see them get one of the better quarterbacks to ever play the game."

The past two AFC West seasons began with a QB corral of Philip Rivers and the Average Joes. Or an average Jason Campbell, Kyle Orton and Matt Cassel. Campbell, an efficient game manager, wasn't the Raiders. The Raiders are Daryl "Mad Bomber" Lamonica and Kenny "The Snake" Stabler.

Carson Palmer better fits the Raiders' tradition. He averaged 4,000 yards and nearly 30 touchdown passes a season for the Cincinnati Bengals from 2005-07. The Raiders acquired him at midseason last year for two high draft picks.

Cassel?

Why didn't they just throw Quinn, Whitehurst, and Campbell on the list?

People are forgetting how much Rivers regressed last year.

if this was 2007 then i would agree with Palmer being listed, but right now this is a 2 star Q division and they reside in Denver and "the whale's vagina"

Most overlooked will be the running game in our division...going to be hell on wheels. Whoever can stop the run wins the division.

People will chalk it up to one bad year. If Rivers has ANOTHER bad year, the "regressing" theory has some real teeth...

i hate the guy but he keeps losing weapons. how much can really be attributed to his possile regression and how much can be attriuted to losing LT, Sproles, and now Jackson. LT was not the same threat he used to be but was still dangerous and a good receiver out of the backfield, Sproles was the guys safety valve.

i dislike him, but still consider him amongst the elite

He came back toward the end of the year. As long as he is with Norv, I'll consider him a threat. Rivers was probably hurt. He had a terrible year for sure, and if he isn't more consistent this year people won't put him in the top three like they have.

does anyone really put him top 3? even if he had a good year last season just about everyone would have ranked Rodgers, Brees and Brady as the top 3 QBs in the league? before last season the rankings had been Manning Brees Brady for a couple seasons.

Rivers sucked last year, Palmer was a pick 6 machine, Cassel sucked last year and Manning looks like a 50 year old throwing the ball.

I'll have to see it to believe it from all 4 QB's.

Yeah, they were grasping at straw with Palmer, notice the article only mentioned 2005-2007. Other than those years he's been below average in almost every category.

Interestingly though, last year at OAK he was well above average in Y/A, average in comp %, a little above average in sack %. I guess that's a little something Raider fans can look at as hope for the future. And he's only 33 yrs old. Maybe he'll resurge a little bit.

Rivers, last year he ended up above average in every passing category except INT %, but had the horrible start to the season. So he's still up there, but they keep losing offensive weapons, and not adding much to replace them. Ryan Matthews never really panned out like they wanted to replace Tomlinson, they let two more of their offensive threats go with VJ and Tolbert, lost Sproles last year. Maybe they have a plan.

Manning, if he regains the arm strength obviously he's the class QB of the Div. And of course the supporting cast has to make plays also.

Cassel, oh boy, jeez, good luck KC. Brady Quinn may be the best QB on the KC roster. Maybe Quinn can finally step up and be the man.

The best QB division is the NFC North.

...and if Ponder takes it to the next level, it won't even be close.

If I had to guess I'd say he's far better than Cassel or Palmer, but at the same time, so is Rivers, and Rivers is younger and not coming directly off of injury, but Rivers also lost his #1 weapon and Gates can't stay on the field for more than 2 games at a time.

I love the signing and all, but with Rivers and Manning you got two guys who really are on the downside of careers, and Palmer never panned out and Cassel just sucks. So, in terms of divisions sporting good qb's .... I can't really get excited about the AFC West.

Light years ahead of Brodie Croyle, JaMarcus Russel & Kyle Orton.

yeah, but ...

Eli, the Dogkiller, Romo and RGIII

Rogers, Stafford, FrownCannon and Ponder

Brees, Ryan, Freeman and Cam

NFC West is pretty bleak, qb-wise

I think Joe Flacco slept with KCStud's girlfriend because he hates that guy.

I remember when Manning was a free agent he was talking about what a good fit for the Chiefs he'd be. Then when he signed here "Manning sucks" and "is old."

What's funny is that despite all the disses to Flacco, he badly outplayed Brady but his team still lost ... on a idiot kick play
