(CBS News) The National Debt has now increased more during President Obama's three years and two months in office than it did during 8 years of the George W. Bush presidency.

The Debt rose $4.899 trillion during the two terms of the Bush presidency. It has now gone up $4.939 trillion since President Obama took office.

The latest posting from the Bureau of Public Debt at the Treasury Department shows the National Debt now stands at $15.566 trillion. It was $10.626 trillion on President Bush's last day in office, which coincided with President Obama's first day.

The National Debt also now exceeds 100% of the nation's Gross Domestic Product, the total value of goods and services.

Mr. Obama has been quick to blame his predecessor for the soaring Debt, saying Mr. Bush paid for two wars and a Medicare prescription drug program with borrowed funds.

The federal budget sent to Congress last month by Mr. Obama, projects the National Debt will continue to rise as far as the eye can see. The budget shows the Debt hitting $16.3 trillion in 2012, $17.5 trillion in 2013 and $25.9 trillion in 2022.

Federal budget records show the National Debt once topped 121% of GDP at the end of World War II. The Debt that year, 1946, was, by today's standards, a mere $270 billion dollars.

Mr. Obama doesn't mention the National Debt much, though he does want to be seen trying to reduce the annual budget deficit, though it's topped a trillion dollars for four years now.

As part of his "Win the Future" program, Mr. Obama called for "taking responsibility for our deficits, by cutting wasteful, excessive spending wherever we find it."

His latest budget projects a $1.3 trillion deficit this year declining to $901 billion in 2012, and then annual deficits in the range of $500 billion to $700 billion in the 10 years to come.

If Mr. Obama wins re-election, and his budget projections prove accurate, the National Debt will top $20 trillion in 2016, the final year of his second term. That would mean the Debt increased by 87 percent, or $9.34 trillion, during his two terms.

That'll happen when you're dealing with the largest recession since the great depression.

I love how all your wingnuts conveniently (and dishonesty) imply that the debt increase is due to massive spending increases (it ain't) rather than massive revenue drops from said recession.

But Obama has done so much to improve things, well unless you make under 200,000 a year that is. It's almost April, time for the Obamas to go on vacation.

Bingo.

Not sure why UltimateSpammer continues to post this disingenuous tripe when it's so transparently dishonest to anyone with two brain cells to rub together.

I guess UltimateSpammer is driven exclusively by a "stay true to your team" boosterism - facts, truth, and logic are irrelevant to him.

Given the extent to which your hero and your crime syndicate masquerading as a political party reduced America to economic rubble, even Jesus would need more time to turn things around.

It was the acceptance of the main tenets of conservative Republicanism that got us where we are today.

a. Destruction of progressive taxation.
b. Subsidized corporations with taxpayer funds.
c. Removal of the regulations on banks and Wall Street.
d. Giving corporations the rights of persons.
e. Dismantling laws protecting unions.
f. Removing campaign finance controls.
g. Installing trade policies that benefit corporations while damaging and disempowering workers

None of this was accidental. The basic attack plan was outlined in the Powell Memo of 1971 and was properly launched under Ronald Reagan. http://reclaimdemocracy.org/corporate_accountability/powell_memo_lewis.html The basic concept is to replace government power with corporate power. That final victory was achieved under Bush. For the working American, it has been an abject failure. He sees a destroyed country, with less opportunity, less wealth, and fewer rights. For the corporate owners of America, it is an unqualified success. Their wealth and power has skyrocketed and even the Supreme Court is now the tool of their supremacy. The legislature has long been on board. The executive is, at best, a hollow spokesman. The levers of power are removed from the people. For good.

We can argue about recessions and debt for as long as we have breath. The top one percent continues to wallow in unprecedented profits. The recession is ours. Not theirs. The war is over. We lost.

Since 2006, deficit spending has gone up almost 400 percent. Gee...what happened in 2006?

And the GOP still doesn't have an electable candidate.

I guess that having to ramp up the military and deal with 911 and its aftermath is conveniently being forgotten about Bushes term of office..

Folks forget that much of the country was in the toilet right after 911, those living in military cities lost most of their forces and then families devastating their economies, Some have yet to recover from that..

but then every thing is GWB's fault..

Spending has increased and revenue has dropped.
