Without Elway Denver would have never gotten Manning. I listened to the Press conferance today and was surprised at how John performed. He loves his job and you can see that fire burns bright inside him just like when he played.

Sign me up. The Broncos just wouldn't be what they are today without John. Quite frankly he's about the only thing that could have pulled us out of the hole that McD left us with. Sure Manning is just one man but he's certainly enough to help attract some better talent over the next few years and replace with a younger QBOTF.

It was obvious John was positioning himself for a Bronco job after he retired. Had the pleasure of going to a bunch of Crush games back in the day. He quickly led that franchise to a Championship. Although it was "just arena football" it was impressive how quickly he built a winning culture there and connected the fans to the game. I remember thinking they were more fun then Bronco games there for a bit.

Next owner of the Denver Broncos? I wouldn't discount it.

I didn't think the guy had this kind of wherewithal in him. The car dealerships always seemed to cloud his business/leadership acumen for me--but clearly, I didn't see something. Elway is a leader in whatever he might do. It was Elway that made the Denver job attractive, just one year after a second in the league worst finish--yet Elway sold Manning on the Broncos. It's still a bit surreal. The Broncos had arguably (fandom aside) the worst roster among the Manning competitors, yet the team managed to prevail.

As much as we were decrying what a boring coach John Fox was when we first brought him in, it was his casual confidence and Elway's brash analysis of what the stakes were, that made it a no-brainier for Manning. (And after the press conference, we could see how Manning was already a Bronco while he paid his respects).

The stakes for Manning wasn't simply winning or even Superbowls (as foolish as it might be to say), it was all about Legacy. Elway was maybe the only executive in the game that could speak to legacy. That could say, "Peyton, you will be the all time greatest quarterback if you win here,"--the only executive to say such a thing and for Manning to believe him.

Manning spoke at the press conference about history meaning something to him. He meant the Broncos history of competitive football for nearly three decades, but he also clearly meant history in terms of his own legacy. The Broncos, really, provided the only safe choice for Manning to win and feel damn good about it. He's not screwing the Colts or his brother Eli, and he's in an environment which has won TWO superbowls with a HOF QB in the twilight years.

Elway treated Manning just as he would want to be treated, appealed to the man as Elway himself might wanted to feel upon his own fantasy free agency. No one could know what Manning might feel (with any legitimacy) other than Elway. Elway didn't sell just Superbowls, he sold Manning on History, on the Legacy of the greatest quarterback to ever play the game.

I always felt good about Elway coming back to the run the team. I just wanted someone we could trust. He loves Bowlen and the Broncos. We are on the rise for sure.

LOL... now it's on hold. The Jets organization is a mess. It would be great if the end up swallowing the $5 million they will owe the Broncos.

If this trade goes through Elway will be a legendary GM in his 2nd year!! Lol

giving 9 million bucks to bunkley is crazy. dude played well in a contract year. you never want to over pay for that. it's a loss, but it isn't critical.

Quote from Manning today:

"John said it was great," Manning said. "It wasn't great throwing. It's not supposed to be great because I'm not where I want to be. I just said: 'Here it is, guys. If you're not interested, you're not hurting my feelings. You've got to tell me.' It bothers me that I don't feel the way I want to feel.

"I have a lot of work to do. I'm not where I need to be."

John has done a great job and knows what it takes to win. He turned a deadend QB situation got out of it and added one of the GOAT. We went from outhouse to the penthouse. I believe that John has us headed for some success. How much is yet to be determined.

with Manning everything changes , Teams have to defend the pass , More teams will be forced into passing situations with a Jack Del Rio defense . I like those odds

There wasn't a happier guy than me when Manning lost that Superbowl. I've hated him from day one. I remember seeing that pic of Elway and Manning at a sports store in the Park Meadows mall years ago (I even made a thread about it) and it turned my stomach. Just hated him with a passion.

Until Monday.

I'm not sold on Elway the GM despite his exploits on the field. I see more of the same thing we've always had under Bowlen's ownership, a lack of ability to build a distinct, clear cut vision and philosophy that would produce a system similar to what NE and Pitt have had recently and other teams have had in the past, namely a superior scouting department, the willingness to build through the draft instead of trying to piecemeal their way to a title by buying up expensive free agents. Manning is 36, one big hit from retirement and the risk seems outlandish for a team as far away as we are right now. For all his greatness, he won only 1 Lombardi with teams more talented than we are now and his playoff record isn't that good. I'd rather have seen us bring in a truly top notch QB coach for Tebow and give him a couple years to grow as we put a sold team around him. Maybe John will surprise me but at this point, other than using his own fame to attract another aging star QB, I'm not seeing what he's doing that's got us going in the right direction. If we were the 9ers and 13-3 last year I could see it but this team has huge holes everywhere that won't be fixed by this one move. If he has a superior draft this time around, I'll maybe start to warm up to him as the GM/Player Czar or whatever title they have for him now.

Every player in the NFL is one hit from retirement. The fact is if Manning would have looked at all the teams that wanted him he would have visited at least 12 teams. The fact that Denver came out on top is a credit to Elway.

Elway also just took the Jets for another $2.5 million!! You know Bowlen is happy about this. Elway has done everyything right. The only people that think he did not do this right are Tebow lovers. I liked Tebow, but I was not maried to the guy and I am ready to move on.

Elway has made some good moves and not so good so far. He hasn't built a Super Bowl team just yet, so let's wait before crowning him Exec. of the Year. He inherited a crap roster that did poorly in the draft for much of the last decade, so he has much work to do to make this a Super Bowl type of team.

Let me put it this way folks.

This time, exactly one year ago, the Broncos were coming off their worst season since the stone age. 4-12. An historically bad defense. A bubbling QB controversy that was about to erupt into a rage. Crippling payments to two sets of dismissed coaching staffs. Most of us thought the rebuilding process would take 3 to 5 years to respectibility.

Here we are, one year later. Defending AFC West Champions. Our first playoff win since 2006. A first ballot Hall of Fame QB coming in to take over at the helm. Now considered serious contenders, not just for the division, but for the whole ball of wax.

I'd say that's a pretty good first year on the job for Elway, the exec.
