Peyton Manning and the Broncos will sign a contract that will mark a new era for both.

The contract is for five years and $96 million with the first year payout of $18 million fully guaranteed, according to an NFL source.

When Manning signed his five-year, $90 million deal with the Indianapolis Colts on July 31, 2011, he wound up with a first-year payout of $26.4 million. That guarantee came in handy as Manning didn't take a snap in 2011 because of a neck injury.

Fitting 18 mil guaranteed for #18, overall well worth the risk

So $18m if he takes a snap or not, which is fine. The rest of the contract is probably protected from neck injury.

Which is incredible since many were arguing half his contract would be guaranteed. I already love me some Manning.

That is a very good contract for the Broncos and Manning.

It is....if he re-injures his neck, we only owe him the remainder of that season only.....plus he has to pass physical in 2015 ~ 2016 to get his $20 mil in those seasons

Manning himself said that he would be willing to protect any team from risk while he was a free agent, he also did the same thing with the Colts.

Supposedly $58 million is guaranteed provided he's healthy .....

The deal is (maybe ) better than I thought. The 1st year guranteed is ok by me. And only 18 mill is also allright. The rest of the particulars and whetehr there are other performance bonuses are not mentioned.

But it seems like a fair deal, and doesn't cash strap us either. Still lots of cap left.

Well done.

Much less guaranteed money than I thought.

WOW!

Where are all the "Elway is in over his head" people at? He'd looking pretty golden around the league right about now. This is a killer deal for us.

Guaranteed with a contingency?

I'm not sure you know what guaranteed means.... I certainly hope the Broncos didn't guarantee $58mil though....

Manning basically gets $18m for stepping off the plane, which is the price you have to pay for a HoF NFL QB. It sounds like the rest of the guaranteed money is protected against re-injuring his neck.

Considering we were willing to pay Orton $10M, this is a bargain.

The desired end doesn't necessarily justify the means, and it seems a little silly to bloviate prior to seeing any evidence that this is a positive outcome.

A few more free agents signed, and even I might agree he's going to be moving from Jack Daniels to Thunderbird Wine.

Yup, protection for the Broncos and plenty of $$$ for Peyton if he stays healthy.

Depending how they structured the deal this year (how much is salary vs signing bonus) he could account from anywhere from 5 million to 18 million against the cap, given we had around 44 at the beginning of free agency we will have worst case scenario 20 left, more likely we have around 28 left.

It's a positive outcome in terms of field of view. No one can guess the future, but everyone can see today. And today, John Elway is creating some uncomfort around the league as an executive to recon with.

The Broncos are Back!

Yah......surprisingly low guaranteed amount of $18M. As you say, most were predicting $40-45M of guarantees.....

Wow.

18 million are guaranteed (that is his take this year), 20 million will become guaranteed next year provided he passes a medical check in March 2013 - now I am not sure if he has to pass another medical in March 2014 or if his 20 million in 2014 become guaranteed from passing the medical in 2013 (I have seen two contradictory statements on that).

For people who were arguing that it's too risky and stupid to expect Manning to ever be his old self I would say we're a long way from a positive outcome.

Elway looks shiny right now, given, but he'll be covered in dookie if Manning is Montana in 2 years.

:spit: That's great. DT was on the Fan yesterday saying he was happy and nervous because he knew Manning would make him prolific but also make him work, and often during his time off. It's ON!

By the way I coached T-ball at that park for my Nephew two years ago.

The bigger question with this contract signing is it enough Money to rent Shanahan's house for his time in DEN ;D

The total let-down to all of this is that we have almost six months until we get to see him play.

half the contract probably is guaranteed provided he is still on the roster after march 1 of next year. i think the ay it probably is is that this season is fully guaranteed, but should injury happen Denver can get out just like Indy did. but provided he stays healthy and Denver keeps him, i would wager probably about 40million of the remaining 78 million over the last 4 years of the deal becomes guaranteed.

Not really. 18 mil guaranteed for PM is worth the risk. Nobody will fault Elway for this no matter how it turns out.

Where's this from?

He gets 18 guaranteed this year (I assume he's already passed the physical) and 20 mil in 13 and 14 guaranteed if he passes another physical in March 13. It could be a three year contract, but it seems to me it's also structured to make him Den's property if he wants to play more than three years.
