View Full Version : Contract Talks Begun with Titans and Manning

UberBroncoMan

Just reported on 850 KOA via Dave Logan.

That was quick.

Don't think contracts would happen if it was a no. Don't recall any reports about this type of stuff from the AZ or Miami camps (and Miami is clearly out of it now since they're targeting Flynn).

That said, it's been reported we were in talks with preliminary contract stuff too. That was before he met the Titans though.

This is confirmed to a degree in that it's on fatman, granted that was earlier so things do change.

http://www.itsalloverfatman.com/

"6:35 pm Word out of Tennessee is the Titans are nearing a deal with Manning."

Take this as you will. We'll know by tomorrow around 4PM because that's when AZ is out of the running due to Kolb's option and I'm sure Manning will want to have a decision by then as well. Could be as soon as tonight.

You're homerin out. Going to Denver over Tennessee probably isn't a smart decision. Denver has been a joke for longer than Tennessee has.

The only one really talking in this is Bud Adams of the Titans. Remember when the Broncos said they would be respectful of the Free Agency process and not speak about what is going on with him?

I hope Bud keeps talking, eventually he will piss off Manning and screw himself. More so because I would love to see him blow his wad then us get Manning.

In fact he sure did shut his trap today. Maybe he was told to take his meds and shut it.

Ben Grubbs is also gone (signed by NO to replace Nicks.)

In fact, the majority of top tier free agents are all gone at this point at almost every position. That's why some of the folks around here are so upset.

One theory is that the Manning wait tied up the front office, which was trying to keep the money available, and since there's at least a 50/50 chance he'll sign with Tennessee, we're left without a date to the prom.

On the other hand, some teams intentionally take the strategy of passing on the top tier of free agency, treating it like trades down in the draft and looking for more players at better bargains later on. Could well be that this was going to be Denver's approach reagrdless of what happens with Manning.

I do think its smart to wait in FA, but I really thought Nicks was the one cant make a bad contract type FA. He really is that solid. I agree though spending a ton on FA not really a smart move. But when a player of Nicks caliber available, and we have one ****ty guard, and one injured guard, and we dont take even a look? That sort of worries me that maybe the Broncos don't want to win all that bad anymore.

My personal dream: We get Manning, trade Tebow to Jacksonville for Gabbert. With Elway and Manning training Gabbert, well, who knows how good he can be. I mean Jacksonville sucks, Gabbert didn't have a chance. Put him in a place with two hall of fame qb's to help him along and we might have a bright qb future ahead of us. My humble opinion, tho.

People are going nuts waiting for Manning to make a decision, but I think that the longer it takes, the more that favors Denver.

Arizona may have to bow out of the race by Friday afternoon if he hasn't made a decision by then. They have to fish or cut bait with a big signing bonus due to Kolb.

Miami needs someone at QB (and probably at WR) and Flynn may be gone soon.

The Titans don't have as much cap room as Denver, and their coaching staff was aiming at a blue chip D-Lineman before their owner went all Al Davis on them. Now, Mario Williams is gone and they might lose Abraham as well.

So, if Denver was planning to low-ball free agency anyway, playing the quantity over guaranteed quality game, it's no skin of their nose if Manning takes two or three or four more days.

TheDave

Agree on the Az part, but Tennessee will wait as long as they need to. Remember it isn't a FO with team wide concerns and a full FA gameplan making the call on Manning. Adams stepped in, crumpled up their entire plan and ordered them to put all energy toward getting Manning, like it or not. Insanity will not slow down for a defensive lineman.

@ Kid_A: That's a good point, but it still comes back to the problem of the owner wanting one thing when everyone else was going another direction. And now they are all dancing desperately to his tune.

I think a lot of this is going to depend on whether they are really able to circumvent the cap with this lifetime job offer. Sounds suspect to me and anytime anyone tries to play games with the cap the league spanks their ass sooner or later.

Yep. I really doubt they're going to let that slide. I'm surprised Goodell hasn't said something already.

There's no telling if it's true or just some Twitter rumor at this point.

Could be that's exactly what the Titans' paper-people are so busy working on right now, and why Manning and his agent would want some extra time to review it.

Cap-room was the main reason why Denver was considered a leader earlier in this process.

Adams home town station quotes him as saying he offered Payton a "contract for life."

If the Broncos lose Peyton to the Titans, they should file a grievance and demand a draft pick or two. ;D

Works like this:

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/03/15/contract-for-life-would-require-two-contracts-league-approval/

No way they can give him part ownership of the team, since it would require approval of all 32 owners, and, off the top of my head, I can think of one "gutless drunk" who might object.

If they add on a coaching staff or front office spot, it has to bear a reasonable relationship to what other staff members are being paid and he actually has to do the work. Any screw up there does result in all kinds of fines and penalties, including draft picks. I can see all kinds of issues here.

If he signs with the Titans we need to put a bounty on him.

Folks... we are negotiating for the rights to the biggest FA in the history of the NFL.

Mannings agent is going to use every trick in the book. I wouldn't be surprised if the final contract was north of $25 million a year - all gauranteed.

In which case I would be most happy for him to go elsewhere.

He is NOT WORTH IT! 16-17 is more than he should probably get, and anything more would need performance clauses based on no less than AFC champs, super bowl entry , and SB win. Only then is it worth near those amounts.
No signing bonus, and a series of 3-4 1 year contracts, with 6-7 mill each year guaranteed upon reup of contract.

Of course, he will get more than that ...and be overpaid ( again) . Hopefully OUR FO is not idiotic enough to do something stupid.

My wife just called from Denver ( visiting sister) and said the TV news there is reporting that Manning is likely going to sign with TENN. Not sure what they are basing it on. ( 10 PM west coast time Thurs)

As far as laying in the weeds and waiting...With the cap room we have we should go after one or two of the better FAs we bring in...then wait and sign other good value pickups when their own teams have signed their most important guys but still have guys they want to also sign, but are now limited in their ability to match and stay under the cap.

I think all this ownership/life after football stuff is just manning 's agent (with the help of mortensen) running with the drunken ramblings of the owner. Make everyone nervous see who writes the biggest check and present it to their client.

Gabbert over Tebow

LOL

You're right. That is a pretty humble opinion.

I personally still think we're going to land Peyton. I don't doubt that what they presented to him was enticing - if not over the top. But there are plenty of factors that lean in our direction. I'll be surprised, and even disappointed if it doesn't happen.

Say what you want about our front office arrangement - it's a lot more stable than what they've got going on in Tennessee right now.

Such as?

I mean I know it's enticing to get to play with Knowshon Moreno instead of Chris Johnson and all...

Be Prepared for it..I always think our front office is one of the worst in the league and it will again prove in couple of days.

If i am Tebow..I will never trust EFX.

Im not even sure what is so enticing about a lifetime contract... in 3 or 4 years years manning will have every opportunity possible offered to him. TV, front office, coaching, what ever he was wants. Why limit his choices now?

Probably...but its for the best. I'd rather they use that same 20-25m on like 4 really good players rather than one QB.

I'm not too worried about Chris Johnson being the deciding factor here. Frankly, I'm not too worried at all. We're the Denver ****ing Broncos, not some Missouri team.

He doesn't have to. If he keeps improving they're stuck. It's all on him.

It doesn't matter if he trusts them or not. It's not like he is in any position to demand a trade or anything. He's as stuck with EFX as EFX is stuck with him. If Hasselbeck can take this Manning talk like a man, I'm pretty confident so can Tebow.
