I'm told that Reggie Wayne does NOT necessarily see his future tied to Peyton Manning's. He could well sign somewhere before Peyton does. That opens an interesting dynamic where Peyton contenders could make a play for Wayne today/tomorrow, use him to recruit Manning after.

BroncoTalk.net has learned through multiple sources that the Denver Broncos will target the following players in free agency –

RB Mike Tolbert.

Tolbert is coming off of a big season in San Diego (eight rushing touchdowns) but is not expected to re-sign with the Chargers. The Broncos’ backfield would instantly improve with the acquisition of Tolbert.

NT Paul Soliai.

The Broncos — and several other teams — have expressed interest in Soliai, who started in twelve games last season. If the Broncos are able to re-sign Brodrick Bunkley and then bring in Soliai, the interior of their defensive line will be fantastically improved from last season.

DB Reggie Nelson.

Nelson is a former first round draft pick who is coming off of a good season with the Bengals. Safety is a good area of need for the Broncos and the team will be targeting Nelson as well as Dwight Lowery.

For the record, I'm putting my money on Paul Soliai ending up in either Denver, San Francisco or Indianapolis. And they are in order.

I thought you didn't build a team via FA anyways so you should be thrilled.

Warren has missed basically the last two seasons, so I wouldn't count on him for anything at this point. If he could return and be effective, that would be a nice surprise. But, yes, neither Bunkley or Soliai provide much in the way of pass rush, so we would need to figure something out for nickle packages.

...I'm told that Reggie Wayne does NOT necessarily see his future tied to Peyton Manning's. He could well sign somewhere before Peyton does. That opens an interesting dynamic where Peyton contenders could make a play for Wayne today/tomorrow, use him to recruit Manning after.

Reggie Wayne is not stupid... this is going to be his last NFL contract, might as well go to the highest bidder.

Peyton doesn't need the money.. he is playing for his legacey and winning another SuperBowl pretty much seals the deal for that.

I love Jason Jones. Love him! I think he's the best penetrating DT on the market, and that he would pair perfectly with Bunk or Soliai. I think getting all 3 would be a stretch, but if we re-sign Bunk I would rather we went after Jones than Soliai.

My preference would be

2-Bunkley and Jones
3- Bunkley and Soliai.

That could start by adding Peyton Manning, but if [not, then] a deep threat like Robert Meachem would help things, as would a pass-catching tight end...they could make a run at John Carlson or Kevin Boss, who was released by the Raiders on Monday.

The team could [add] Lions run-stopper Stephen Tulloch to play the middle and play Nate Irving on the weak side. [4-3 OLBs that fit are] Erin Henderson, Rocky McIntosh, and Philip Wheeler.

They should be in the market for the likes of Brandon Carr and Cortland Finnegan, especially the former.
Manning might insist that his new team sign Reggie Wayne, which would move Decker into the slot while taking away his starting spot. The Broncos would also likely seek a pass-catching running back and could add another Manning teammate, Joseph Addai.

What's the big deal about Morgan? I've heard his name thrown around as a guy teams are high on, but he's been in the league for 4 seasons and never really done anything of note. In the five games he played last season he wasn't exactly on a torrid pace.

Wonder what teams see in him?

Shefter just said that Peyton liked the idea of playing with Marshall so the trade doesn't make sense from the Manning angle. He's saying Philbin and Sherman wanted BM gone so they could put their own stamp on the offense.

I wouldnt expect Manning to come out and say he didn't want to play with BM. He's just being professionally polite.

From what I've read (http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d5d82789abc/article/understanding-ebb-and-flow-of-frenzied-freeagent-period) (Mike Lombardi), it's because he's a second tier player who has "star" potential. He's basically a sleeper FA. He'll come cheap (in comparison), and has a high upside.

Per Lombardi:
When free agency begins, big-name players will fly off the market, but you should also expect some lesser-known guys to go quickly -- and become very wealthy in their own right. For example, wide receiver Josh Morgan is a hot name right now. He is hot because he will cost less than some of the more recognizable wideouts, like Vincent Jackson and Marques Colston, yet might play as well. Morgan has the potential to become a star if he goes to the right team and can stay healthy. He only started five games last year for the San Francisco 49ers before a broken leg put him on injured reserve for the rest of the season. Yet his talent is undeniable and teams will pay well for his services. He will be off the market before Sunday.

Morgan wont get a cheap deal if he signs in the first few hours of free agency. The skins will backload these deals too with the majority of money in year 3 onwards considering the $36m cap hole they have to swallow over the next 2 seasons.

I can't see how Soliai makes that much more than Mebane ($5M AAV), Coefield ($6M), and Jenkins ($4M) last year.

Bunkley is a $3-$4M DT. Soliai is a $4.5-$5.5M DT. We could definitely use both as with Doom, Ayers, and Miller we could get after the QB if our DTs could contain up the middle.

It would also completely change our short yardage/goal line defense where we are soft as hell up the middle.

Sign 'em both, add a rookie in the first or second round at DT with some pass rush upside, draft a later round pass rush specialist type for depth.

It would be nice to at least schedule some visits so Manning doesnt think he will playing with some of the same crap as we did last year. Come on at least look like we are going for some talent. If we can get Peyton here 1st theres no excuse to not have other Fa visiting right now. Even if your waiting on Manning that should have no effect on the Defensive side of the ball especially with the cap room we have.

22.5 mil per, damn that's some serious coin. but if he's healthy he's worth it.

Pure Speculation and something to think about: I'm hearing that Manning's contract could be 90M over 4 years with 45 guaranteed.

Nope...but neither can Tebow, so what's your point?

Tebow leaves us an extra $20 mil or so to pay somebody who can.

Coming off of his neck injury? That is crazy. I would prefer spending that money on upgrading some of the scrubs we have starting.

I'm looking at you Goodman, Beadles and Mays.

(But mostly Goodman)

Rams and free-agent cornerback Cortland Finnegan reached agreement on a five-year deal worth about $50 million

That's insane money for Finnegan. I wouldn't want him at that price.

NFL.com is saying the Niners are unlikely to resign Carlos Rogers. Of course, with Finnegan setting the market like that all these corners are likely to cash in big time.

I think Denver would be avoiding the first big wave of free agents even if Manning wasn't in the mix. They've already said as much. It is a pretty deep year so far as the FA class is concerned, and if Manning isn't available, they'll have lots of money to go after more guys at lower prices than we've seen today.

Typical Denver Bowlen's:

Allow all the good free agents to sign.
Then sign guys to 4yr - $10m deals
Then, go 8-8...
Fall back....we're building through the draft

Whatever.

This team needs more than Peyton Manning. They need a starting Safety, CB, MLB, DT, OLB, and RB. That's a lot of needs to be sitting on your hands watching the market dry up.

So, when Manning signs elswhere....where does that leave us. We always liked Tim, we know what type of potential he has, we hope he's our QB of the future....waw, waw!

it's only day one, there's been like 20 deals all day and Washington was like 5 of those. Finnegan isn't worth $10M/season so not upset about that.

We have Merriweather visiting Denver as a starting FS

Also still in the mix for Soliai at NT

We can't sign absolutely every big name free agent there is. I'm sure 25 plus teams want Jackson, Williams, Finnegan, Wayne etc.

Manning has to be looking at this situation closely. Does he like what we have to offer better than the other teams?

Broncos: D. Thomas, E. Decker, Magahee, Moreno, Oline
Cardinals: L. Fitzgerald, E. Doucet, Todd Heap, Beanie Wells
Titans: Chris Johnson, Kenny Britt, Nate Washington, Oline
Dolphins: Reggie Bush/Daniel Thomas, Devon Bess, A. Fasano, B. Hartline, Oline

Yes, we want to build through the draft...but, we have a lot of holes, and we need to make a couple "KEY" signings. All this bargain basement signings aren't going to make us a super bowl team. If we sign a 35yr old QB, we need other pieces to get us there. If you are going to build through the draft, then stay the hell away from Manning. Pick a path and take it. The problem here is, the Broncos are all in on Manning...and if they don't get him...it will be back to the old story line...we're building through the draft....8-8's a coming!

CIN, DEN, JAX, MIN, TB only teams in NFL that did not take the additional room in 2012 from WAS/DAL penalty. Those 5 teams get room in 2013.
