--There is an interactive simulation here where you can see what the real choices are and see where you end up.
You can play Ron Paul, Romney or Santorum.
I got the US debt down to ~50% of GDP from its current ~95%.
Easily.
We all know what needs to be done, and how to do it. What's lacking is the political will to do it. And no, the GOP's toadying of Grover Norquist doesn't count as political will. They're full of ****.

Hilarious!
Easily. Congrats. You slashed trillions by pressing some buttons on your computer screen.
I got an idea on how to fix this. Wags why don't you start by sending in extra money to the IRS.

It was too difficult for you.

It's a problem we all have and are responsible for. We must all participate on the solution.
Why are you denying responsibility?

He slashed everything. It's eash to click buttons. It is hard to look a person in the eye and take away their benefits.
What the exercise does is that a middle of the road solution to slashing the budget. Those are the choices on the table. I was hoping some of the posters would name other choices that were not listed to see if we could figure out where we really can slash the budget.
I believe the public outcry would be massive.

I'm doing my part. I pay my taxes and am voting for Ron Paul. The irresponsible thing to do is to vote for Obama and not pay taxes like tens of millions of Americans.
Obama's track record on debt speaks for itself. Yes I know. It's Bush's fault. Well Bush is golfing now and Obama has done a bang up job adding trillions of debt while shoveling billions to the banksters.

The Banksters get paid every election!
Ron Paul has enough votes to actually broker some deals with the Republicans. I am curious to see what he chooses to do with that.
What'd you do to get there?
Cut spending and eliminated tax loopholes.

Yep, it does. It says very clearly that he's not a particularly big spender (compared to his contemporaries), but got handed a totally screwed economy.
Also, for the umpeen-billionth time: Almost everyone pays taxes (including federal taxes). A large amount of taxes even. If you took 10 seconds to understand how taxes work, you wouldn't make such foolish statements.

No matter how many times you pretend like he's not talking about income taxes, it doesn't change anything. We all know what he means just as you do.

The statement that millions of people don't pay taxes is flat out incorrect. When, as it usually is, it's coupled with statements like "all those people who contribute nothing!" or "the 47% who are just leeches" it's clear the person speaking doesn't understand how taxes work.
Now maybe the OP I was replying to was meaning only income taxes, but I wouldn't count on it.
