View Full Version : Jack Del Rio?

Looking at the available talent out there, if Allen leaves, what would you think about Jack Del Rio running the defense? He had some pretty damn good defenses in Jacksonville when the talent was there.

Well, that's why we're going to have to make him Defensive Coordinator/Assistant Head Coach/Lady in Waiting!

That thing where he has the corners play fifteen yards off the line on every play during the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Quarters - and Overtime, if applicable - is shear genious!

Del Rio was Fox's first DC in Carolina before he got the Jags' job, so it would make sense.

Man-Goblin

Fox hired Del Rio as his first d-coordinator 2002. They took the 31st ranked D, which only won one game, to the number 2 ranked D in one year. They only finished behind the Bucs that year, who won the Super Bowl. Del Rio got the Jags job after only one year as Fox's coordinator (Dennis Allen?).

He's the guy if they can get him/want to pay for him.

that would be ****ing awesome. sad thing is that if that happened and he came in and turned this into a top 5 defense in a single season(which he and Fox together have accomplished once already) it is likely he is a major HC candidate next season and we are in this position of losing our DC again.

I just heard talk on some sports radio show that Jack Del Rio and his Son were in California looking at some schools (high school ?) , guess his kid plays QB and their intent is for him to go to SC and try and play.

Take it for what its worth.. which ain't much.

Looks like Allen is officially gone according to pft. It's on the top page of the website. Hope the next DC is at least comparable to him, thought he did a nice job this year. Although we do have one of the most dynamic pass rushing duos in the league, so that obviously helped him a lot.

I've heard Del Rio stopped preparing and became a terrible coach after he signed his last big contract. I think it was on the BS report with Mike Lombardi saying he had heard things. Not positive the source though. I need to think about it. I just remember they said he wasn't showing up very early and stopped attending some meetings these last few years.

Well according to my research (also known as Google), if you wanted to make a case for Del Rio...

He has one season as a DC in his career: as noted earlier it was in Carolina with Fox during his first year there as HC. The defense finished 2nd in yards per game and 5th in points allowed per game. Following that season he was hired as the Jags HC. For comparison sake the Panthers finished 31st (there were only 31 teams in 2001) in yards per game and 28th in points allowed per game. The season after he left, the defense finished 8th in yards per game and 10th in points per game.

Prior to his tenure as DC with the Panthers, Del Rio was the Ravens LB coach overseeing the group of Ray Lewis, Peter Boulware and Jamie Sharper. Under his tenure, Lewis won Defensive Player of the Year and Super Bowl MVP as his team won a championship as statistically the best rushing defense and best points per game defense of the 16-game season era.

He ran the defense by himself in the 10 season in Jax and I believe 09 as well but I'm not positive about the latter.

Hate to quote PFT but this is via NFL Network

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/01/25/jack-del-rio-could-pop-up-in-denver/

Fox may wind up hiring someone that was his old defensive coordinator in Carolina. NFL Network’s Jason La Canfora reports Jack Del Rio has emerged a candidate to replace Allen.

Del Rio was Fox’s coordinator with the Panthers in 2002 before landing the head coaching job in Jacksonville. It’s a little unclear if Del Rio wants to coach in 2012 or move his family from Jacksonville. He’s still collecting money from the Jaguars, so choosing to work elsewhere is essentially choosing to work for free. (If Del Rio earned $1 million in Denver, he’d make $1 million less from the Jaguars.)

Then again, most coaches simply want to work.

Raiders Hired Dennis allen what did Bronco's run a 4-3. I think that was the idea 3-4 when raiders were looking at Winston Moss. To be fair no one knows what defense they will be running.

It looks pretty similar, he likes big guys at DT and speedy guys on the end positions for pass rush, he runs a lot of man cover with his corners.

@Jeff_Legwold: Broncos head coach John Fox will look to Broncos LBs coach Richard Smith and Jack Del Rio possible replacements for Dennis Allen.

I guess the take on Richard Smith is that he has been coaching in the NFL for a long time.. been a Defensive Coordinator before.. shoot even was on the Broncos coaching staff years ago I believe in the SuperBowl years. He is in his 50s, so chances of him moving on to a head coaching position are minimal.

Now Jack Del Rio is talked about being a head coach again somewhere, so he may be here and gone in a year or two.

Outside of Del Rio....I'd like them to consider Singletary...isn't he a LB coach in Minnesota?? He might not have panned out as a HC...but, I'd take a shot at him for DC. Talk about passion!!!
