I don't recognize the name, but that doesn't make it less tragic. My condolences to the Current family...

He played right tackle for the Broncos from the late 60's to mid-70's. Not quite a pro bowler but a very good player. 6'4", 270, which was large for any football player at that time.

Mike Current was plucked off our roster as one of the first expansion picks by the new Buccaneers in 1976. Mike Current played all of his early years for Lou Saban, who was a nut on the sidelines, and then played for John McKay during the famous 1976 winless Buccaneers season. He played for 2 of NFL Films favorite pold school personalities.

Current's last NFL game was a 1979 playoff loss to the Steelers as he finished his career with Miami. RIP

For some of you other "old timers", Current used to be a call in guest on the Uncle Mike (McKuen) radio show and proved he was funny and very interesting at things other than football. Another tragic suicide by a football player.

Sad, but did he have to do it in a scenic spot, with a shotgun? I'll bet the next people that came along didn't find it so scenic. Hope there weren't kids with them.

Take some pills. Use a rope.

Anyway. RIP

Yeah no kidding.

Thats a bit ungenerous.

People out there need to think about the poor guy who has to clean you up, especially if their method of choice is shotgun to the brain.

I know if i ever decided to kill myself i would get a boat, tie a cinder block to my foot and take myself to sea.

But then again. Why not go out in style if youre really intent on checking out?.. Maybe try and set a world record or something. How much coke can one person do in 1 night? Whats the largest body of water ever jumped via moped.. **** like that.

Not to belittle this guy tho. R.i.p to him. Im sure he had good reason.

Hopefully this was just an accident involved with hunting or something.

I remember current having his own radio show, too. It was 5 or 10 minutes and he'd give an inside view of the broncos. He was always very personable and open with his opinions.

Rip mike

Current wrote a book called Life in the trenches that I just heard about.
Picked up a copy on Amazon. Hope to enjoy the book. But sad ending to a very good player. Heard his wife may have left him.

I guess he is no longer "current". (Damn it John, we all thought it but we don't actually post it!).

"The Salem, Ore. Statesman Journal reports he was scheduled to appear in court Tuesday to enter a plea on charges of sexual abuse and luring a minor."

Makes the story even more sad ... innocent until proven guilty. The whole situation is a shame.

I was fortunate to meet Mike when I was in high school. He was very open and personable about answering any questions about the Broncos and playing in the NFL. To a high school kid, this was one big guy. Hated to see him leave Denver because he was a good steady player and just missed playing for us in 77.

Thanks. I was trying to recall how he came to leave. He was a decent player.

Not at the end, apparantly. But for all we know could have had something like early on set dementia stemming from head traumas. I'm not much into judging and have enough baggage.

Sounds like he saved the taxpayers a lot of money by not rotting in jail for 30 years for abusing children. I'm not so sure that he will rest in peace.

wow, after reading the article, I approve of him shooting his head off. All bets are off in life when an adult does or is accused of doing that. Sick. He seemed like such a fine guy when he played, just shows you never know.

I know that sounds cold but he molested 2 girls and a boy all under the age of 14 (and that's the ones they know about). He was about to plead guilty and get 5 1/2 years for all counts.
He also has 2 sons - quite a legacy that they will be saddled with. I hope they weren't directly affected by his proclivities.
