Maybe it was directed and encouraged by higher ups in the Obama admin. to do such a thing. Oh wait, no, that is the explanation used when a republican is president. My mistake.

As one can clearly see, this is a story that has not and not likely going to get much publicity in this country unless more videos or pictures come out on daily basis like happened in the past. Since this was done under Obama's watch and the anti-war folks, especially in the media, have long gone home since troops in war is only acceptable when a democrat is the president. Our troops are still in Afghanistan, left to apparently pee on dead bodies and get shot at(and defend mountains and desert) while the anti-war crowd has suddenly no comment on the matter. How convenient and just a coincidence of course. What a bunch of phonies.

What a weird twist of logic. Four marines commit a deplorable act, an act forbidden under the UCMJ, an act for which the military, and their country will prosecute them to the fullest, and this crackpot comes along and tries to paint it as an indictment of our entire society? As justification for acts of terrorism against our people?
I was listening to a historian on NPR the other day who stated that, in his opinion, the U.S. military was the most powerful humanitarian organization of the 20th century. They liberated millions of people from tyranny and oppression, helped rebuild nations destroyed by war, brought relief to millions suffering from starvation, natural disasters and medical plagues, and like Colin Powell said, all we've asked for in return is a place to bury our dead.
America is by no means perfect, but if we are the tyrants of the world, as Gaffney and his fellow America hating fringe dwellers Roberts and Chomsky want us to believe, then we are the most benign tyrants in history.

You start with our forebears -- what they did -- the genocide of maybe 50 million native Americans.
When the west was won we branched out -- to places like the Philippines -- where US forces slaughtered who knows how many Filipinos --- maybe another 100,000 or more
Then there was Vietnam where we liquidated 2-3 million. Nor does this count the 900,000 dead Cambodians and Laotians -- who died as a result of the most intense bombing campaign up to that point in history.
Figure in the ecocide -- the destruction via agent orange and other defoliants --not to mention the bombing -- of thousands of square miles of tropical rainforests...much of which has never recovered to this day.
Nor does this count the subsequent diseases and birth defects caused by the spraying...the destroyed lives
Now turn to Iraq -- where a minimum of 500,000 infants/children died as a result of the US sanctions in the 1990s.
Now add in the unknown dead since the US invasion in 2003 -- at least another million.
Al of this history of slaughter is well documented. No smoke and mirrors.
But it's evidently too real for most here on the OM --

The W*gs spin machine never stops.
I have never said -- because I do not believe -- that the US is the source if all evil.
There's corruption everywhere.
What makes the US variety so significant is that we have the military power to cause great harm -- and this is what we've done.
Yet most Americans are unaware. The US TV never shows the blood and gore from these wars. The media in other nations does report --but Americans are kept blissfully ignorant.
This is for a reason -- to keep the public malleable. If the people knew the truth -- they'd revolt. Can't have that.
What's hopeful is that the revolt is starting to happen -- despite the propaganda mill.
As for W*gs -- he's a shill for that machine --

So they hate us because we peed on some bodies after they rammed 2 planes into our WTC, then kill all our captured soldiers by chopping off their heads? Well we should treat them better.
These soldiers were asked to be killers, to punish them for peeing on some dead bodies is a joke. Don't turn men into killers then expect them to never go over the line. To hold them to the standards civilians are judged by is stupid.
It's all caused by battle fatigue and the stress of war. The enemy does not adhere to Geneva so a little violation of body desecration not that big of a deal. It's only being a big deal because it went viral.
They should just let the men not be soldiers anymore and become civilians.
So, cutty, when Somalian gunmen dragged the bodies of American soldiers around after the Battle of Mogadishu, you were OK with that?

When you make men kill on both sides things will happen. But surly it isn't the cause of the conflict.

There is a difference between healthy introspection and self-loathing. There are some out there who would ascribe nefarious intent to everything we do as a nation, while assuming that those around us are somehow more pure by the simple fact that they are weaker, or less wealthy. I think some folks appease their own guilt by this type of self-flagellation, but it is not rooted in repentance of any type, it is a form of false pride. What the soldiers did was wrong – period. I have close friends who served – one who was stabbed more than once by children, as he was trying to give them candy in Iraq. I know what he would say about those soldiers – that they lacked discipline.
Having said that, your examples are bit off on several fronts.
Starting with #1
How many Native Americans died as a result of slaughter by the evil white man, v. how many died as the result of Small Pox? The ratio is well over 90% that died by the pandemic spread of disease. When the Spaniards traversed this continent most were very brutal, but it was not their sword that killed 50 million, it was unfortunate vulnerability to disease. Newer research suggests that when English appeared on the scene millions had died already. Yes, it is sad, but should I think less of America because of a biologically caused pandemic? There were many actions, like from Andrew Jackson, that i cant excuse, except that he kicked the bucket some time ago, and I have to deal with the reality of the situation now. How do I choose a better path for myself now? This has nothing to do with guilt of what happend in a different age, it has to do with what I change.
Regarding the other more recent examples, America has done alot of good in the world too. It may be equally unsophisticated to think we are always the devil, as those that think we are always on the side on angles.

Brutality in battle is one thing, messing with dead bodies afterwards is debasement.

It's disappointing to me because it speaks to the mindset of the soldiers there right now. When this dishonorable mindset prevails, it goes to suggest that the war has run its course.
