View Full Version : The History of Christmas

Always on the lookout for more fun facts about us crazy apes who populate this planet, I found these interesting factoids about the revered and holy day of Christmas:

C. In the 4th century CE, Christianity imported the Saturnalia festival hoping to take the pagan masses in with it. Christian leaders succeeded in converting to Christianity large numbers of pagans by promising them that they could continue to celebrate the Saturnalia as Christians.[2]

D. The problem was that there was nothing intrinsically Christian about Saturnalia. To remedy this, these Christian leaders named Saturnalia’s concluding day, December 25th, to be Jesus’ birthday.

E. Christians had little success, however, refining the practices of Saturnalia. As Stephen Nissenbaum, professor history at the University of Massachussetts, Amherst, writes, “In return for ensuring massive observance of the anniversary of the Savior’s birth by assigning it to this resonant date, the Church for its part tacitly agreed to allow the holiday to be celebrated more or less the way it had always been.” The earliest Christmas holidays were celebrated by drinking, sexual indulgence, singing naked in the streets (a precursor of modern caroling), etc.

F. The Reverend Increase Mather of Boston observed in 1687 that “the early Christians who first observed the Nativity on December 25 did not do so thinking that Christ was born in that Month, but because the Heathens’ Saturnalia was at that time kept in Rome, and they were willing to have those Pagan Holidays metamorphosed into Christian ones.”[3] Because of its known pagan origin, Christmas was banned by the Puritans and its observance was illegal in Massachusetts between 1659 and 1681.[4] However, Christmas was and still is celebrated by most Christians.

G. Some of the most depraved customs of the Saturnalia carnival were intentionally revived by the Catholic Church in 1466 when Pope Paul II, for the amusement of his Roman citizens, forced Jews to race naked through the streets of the city. An eyewitness account reports, “Before they were to run, the Jews were richly fed, so as to make the race more difficult for them and at the same time more amusing for spectators. They ran… amid Rome’s taunting shrieks and peals of laughter, while the Holy Father stood upon a richly ornamented balcony and laughed heartily.”[5]

H. As part of the Saturnalia carnival throughout the 18th and 19th centuries CE, rabbis of the ghetto in Rome were forced to wear clownish outfits and march through the city streets to the jeers of the crowd, pelted by a variety of missiles. When the Jewish community of Rome sent a petition in1836 to Pope Gregory XVI begging him to stop the annual Saturnalia abuse of the Jewish community, he responded, “It is not opportune to make any innovation.”[6] On December 25, 1881, Christian leaders whipped the Polish masses into Antisemitic frenzies that led to riots across the country. In Warsaw 12 Jews were brutally murdered, huge numbers maimed, and many Jewish women were raped. Two million rubles worth of property was destroyed.
http://www.simpletoremember.com/vitals/Christmas_TheRealStory.htm

Originally, during Saturnalia, the Roman towns would select a person to be wined and dined and orgied for a couple of weeks and then he or she would be sacrificed on the 25th. It was assumed that this person would carry the darkness and evil done throughout the year into the underworld with him, or her - in effect, taking the sins of the townsfolk with them. After awhile, the human sacrifice thing wavered in popularity and was replaced by little shapes of men made of gingerbread. Yum.

A. The Origin of Christmas Tree
Just as early Christians recruited Roman pagans by associating Christmas with the Saturnalia, so too worshippers of the Asheira cult and its offshoots were recruited by the Church sanctioning “Christmas Trees”.[7] Pagans had long worshipped trees in the forest, or brought them into their homes and decorated them, and this observance was adopted and painted with a Christian veneer by the Church.

If you think this is nuts, you should read about Easter. ;D

More fixation about religion, no wonder you don't like Tebow and never will. You can choose not to celebrate Christmas if you wish, but most choose to and do not need to search the internet to find a story that makes them feel justified in their feelings since not everybody is defensive and needing constant reassurance like yourself and others like you.

I know there are some in this world who won't be satisfied until everybody believes in the same things they do, take North Korea for example, but I would rather not live in that world. Hope you can adapt. Merry Christmas!

This is a response to the drama llama launching a thread attacking the president because he did not have the "correct" ornaments on the national tree. I thought I would point out where the "tree" idea came from, where the holiday itself came from, and the fact that the same puritans who are attacking Obama's ornaments were, just a hundred years ago, opposed to the whole idea of christmas trees themselves. This country has always been under siege by puritans. Even before the revolution. It continues to this day. And they won't be happy until they replace the Constitution with the bible.

"The damned and their intrinsic self-loathing?" Man! I'll bet you're a hit at the madrassa. BTW, these guys agree with the history take: http://www.history.com/topics/christmas

In fact, for many Romans, December 25th was the holiest day of the year, because it was the birth date of Mithras. So the new church just co-opted the date and replaced Mithras with Jesus.

Here's a Catholic site's interpretation of the same facts:
http://www.catholicculture.org/culture/liturgicalyear/activities/view.cfm?id=643

The date of December 25 was established about the year 320, and the Popes seem to have chosen the twenty-fifth day of December principally to divert the attention of the people from the celebration of a pagan feast of the Mithras cult which was called the "Birthday of the Unconquered Sun" (Natalis Solis Invicti). This does not in any manner indicate that Christmas is merely a "christianized" pagan feast, for Christians of that time realized with St. John Chrysostom: "The pagans call December 25 the Birthday of the Unconquered. Who is indeed so unconquered as Our Lord? . . . or, if they say that it is the birthday of the Sun, He is the Sun of Justice."

It's amazing how defensive you all are getting about some simple facts that are acknowledged by even the Church.

Both of the major Christian holidays (Christmas and Easter) are timed to coincide with pagan festivals and incorporate a huge amount of pagan customs (and even adopted pagan deities) simply because the very early Christians were a lot better at PR than latter and modern Christians. There's no shame in it -- it's a lot better way to try to convert followers than other methods attempted.

Dec 25th was a pagan holiday. Church leaders adopted the date in the 3rd century.
It has nothing to do with Jesus, it was to attempt to divert pagan worship.

Re; I don't know the details of your upbringing, but since you're a mindless uber-leftist, I'd guess you're philosophically and personally a near-clone to whatever was around at the time and, likely, now. I was just pointing out these influences likely had their heads in the sand and tailpipes in the air since you display those traits.

Nice edit, chicken ****. Ha!

Expecting honesty from our resident teabaggers is expecting far too much.

They have to lie to themselves (which then leaks out to others) to maintain their dogma. Doublethink at its finest.

Re; You got the same issue as LABF'er - glaring hypocrisy.
My repeated pwnage of your CO2-hysteria is a great example of the blanket of lies you wrap yourself in and try to sell to others (while politically, those lies are used to rob $billions from taxpayers to funnel into connected companies).
Or in your words - ""They have to lie to themselves (which then leaks out to others) to maintain their dogma."

When directly challenged on substance, all you could do to avoid showing what an ignorant fraud you are and the total scam that is CO2-hysteria was run into the corner and try to shield yourself by repeating an answered vocabulary question.
Or to use your words - "No wonder you get the science wrong - because you got no science at all."

You're really living in a fantasyland.

You don't even know the difference between specific and relative humidity, and think a reanalysis is observations. That's top-shelf stupidity.

Re; Always great to here your blatant lies F*GS. That's as true as your previous statement claiming I'm a global warming denier and makes it seem you're still curled up in your same corner of failure after yet another beatdown I delivered.
To repeat a previous question; Does your above comment make you a liar, or a moron that should know better? Either way, let's just call it a "Progressive" statement.F*GS -

So start clearing your name and tell me what

specific humidity

and

relative humidity

are.

I'll even allow an open book.

There you go slinging sh*t against the wall again in the hope something will stick.

Still waiting for the specifics re: this alleged "glaring hypocrisy."

My repeated pwnage of your CO2-hysteria...

L0L! Hilarious!

Gotta love the Internet: a place where pretenders like you can get their asses kicked (repeatedly) and still declare victory.

Go ahead and check the link on post#10 for a good start and, as I mentioned in that post, you'll see the stark contrast to the Christianity-hating BS that God-hating Rohirm started this thread with.

You mean this....."Christmas Day–has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1870."

So Christmas started in 1870, end of story?

Re; You just can't seem to help continuing to show your hypocrisy - now using "@" and "L0L" straight from the twitterverse or minds of 12yr old girls to try and form sentences.

You make those 12 year-old girls look like MENSA material by comparison.

My brashness may make it appear that way, but if you knew me in person, you'd consider me modest. I'm that good.

Hint. This:

========

is not eight inches, despite what you think.

That you can't even begin to understand, much less answer, the most basic questions that I've asked, tells me that your opinion of your knowledge is hugely (to put it mildly) overstated.

It's amazing how defensive you all are getting about some simple facts that are acknowledged by even the Church.

They're reacting like children who have just been told there is no Santa Claus.
