I know there's more to playing defense than sacks, but the hacks that vote for this award are going to put strong emphasis in this one stat:

SACKS
Aldon Smith, 13.0
Von Miller, 11.5

Miller has two weeks to set the rookie record, casted thumb be damned. Where I live, I am subjected to a lot of Buffalo Bills coverage. They started the season strong, and probably would be playoff contenders if they didn't lose Fred Jackson. Fitzpatrick is an average quarterback, nothing more. The Bills have a terrible offensive line, and Fitzpatrick is oblivious to pressure at times. I expect some big hits on Fitz and a pick or two this Sunday. After that we play Orton. Go get 'em Miller!

Miller isn't rushing the passer on every down.

Smith is.

Smith might have better numbers, but Von has been consistent, getting sacks in almost every game this year. He has also dropped into coverage and missed a game. Smith is also on a much better defense, and I assume that other teams haven't focused on him as much as they have von. Smith had a great game against a statue tonight and inflated his sack numbers, so he still has a great chance. I think Miller has been more impressive though.

Von will need to close the season out with some big plays to get the award. Really though who cares? He's a great player and we scored, so did the niners it seems.

Smith owned tonight. He lifted Max Starks completely off the freaking ground with his power rush. Pretty impressive.

I wouldn't be shocked if the guy gets 3 sacks when they play the Rams again.

Smith hasn't even been a starter the entire year. If the guy plays as many snaps as Von does, he would probably have 17 sacks right now.

Smith still isn't a full time starter. He's a pass rush specialist. You know, a guy who comes in and can just fire at the QB every time while well rested.

Many of those guys disappear when asked to suddenly be every down contributors. Ever hear of Mark Anderson? 5th round pick who had 12 sacks his rookie year with the Bears despite only one game started? They made him a full time player the next year and his sacks dropped to 5. Now he's with the Patriots, back to a part time pass rush specialist role and he's got 9.

If Smith was an every down player he'd probably have less than 10 sacks right now and would have given up some huge plays because he doesn't know anything about coverage or reading the run, just how to attack the QB.

Its very possible Smith will win because the 49ers are a big story and he'll get tons of eyeballs on him with Justin Smith a leading candidate for DPOY playing with him as well. But he hasn't been nearly as big of an impact week after week and play after play as Von Miller has been for the Broncos.

Most people will judge on sack total alone, and not see the forest for the trees kind of thing. Oh well. It's just a good feeling to know we hit on a player with such a high pick instead of missing out.

Aldon Smith is a very good player, but these are two different positions. Miller has been a menace all-around, not just in pass-rushing, and one could argue he has outright won a game or two for Denver. I think the choice is pretty obvious and I believe those who vote on these things will see that.

As a Broncos fan I say blasphemy.

Then I look at reality, and I agree completely. Would be heart breaking for sure because Von started off so strong, but not like I'd crucify anyone who voted for Smith.

Not true. They only bring him in on obvious passing downs, probably because he fails to make plays in the run game. Do you realize how stupid your post is? KC fans always show how stupid they are. Obviously if he made plays on early downs he would play more. You think they just want to keep him from getting sacks? Pull your head out of your ass and get a clue, or stop coming around here and pretending to talk football. You're pathetic.

Hey coach lets only play that one dend on some downs, we don't want him to get 17 sacks.

In the long run of this, I really don't care if he wins it or not. He's proved how critical he is to this teams defense so I'm happy with that. Awards are worthless (unless it is the Lombardi trophy).

Winning awards only makes him harder to keep come contract time.

Sacks are the sexy stat, but Miller as a LB has about twice as many tackles and tackles for loss than Alden Smith. Also, unofficially on coaches film, I still don't think Miller has been tagged for a missed tackle all season.

Smith has played like half the snaps and does one thing. Rush the passer. If you want to ignore that, according to PFF, von is the best 4-3 linebacker against the run, then fine. Also, i dont know how many double teams smith is getting.

It should be Von's no question

Ya so anything is possible. Von may still get the most sacks.

He does have trouble shedding blocks with the cast on, but he needs to get used that fast.

Without him being effective, this defense is toast.

So Von getting the same 3rd down chances, plus passing chances on 1st and 2nd down and he still doesn't have as many as Smith clearly makes him the better pass rusher right?

Don't even try to say KC fans don't know about Aldon Smith. He's from MU. Dude is just as good of a pass rusher as Von.

Smith is young and doesn't have much experience which makes Von better in run and pass defense. Von had 4 seasons of playing experience at A&M compared to Smith's 2 at MU.

So yes Von is all around a better complete player right now, but in a year or two I can Smith being better, especially learning from Harbaugh.

I didn't know they rated Von best 4-3 LB against the run ... damn, that's nails. Too bad it's not flashy.

With the full stats it's just as close ... but if Smith gets to 15 sacks for the rookie record, forget about it, that's flashy.

1) Von Miller missed a game
2) You're discounting the many, many snaps that Von Miller does not rush the passer.
3) You're just dumb.

1. Von still has more pass rush attempts than Smith due to passing attempts on 1st and 2nd down.
2. Nope didn't discount them at all. Said he was more developed in against the run and pass.
3. You're a flaming homer.

You're assuming that Aldon Smith is only brought in on 3rd down and that Von Miller rushes on every pass attempt, both of which are really poor assumptions. Which isn't surprising, considering the source.

Or maybe that giant club of a hand hinders him too.

I think maybe he is hitting the rookie wall a bit too. That and the Pats played a damn good game against him.

Your just trying to negate somebody who is going to be beating whatever QB you throw out there for years to come. I would trivialize him too if I were you. Thank the lord I am not you.
